Book Reinventing Food Banks and Pantries

Download or read book Reinventing Food Banks and Pantries written by Katie S. Martin and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the US, there is a wide-ranging network of at least 370 food banks, and more than 60,000 hunger-relief organizations such as food pantries and meal programs. These groups provide billions of meals a year to people in need. And yet hunger still affects one in nine Americans. What are we doing wrong? In Reinventing Food Banks and Pantries, Katie Martin argues that if handing out more and more food was the answer, we would have solved the problem of hunger decades ago. Martin instead presents a new model for charitable food, one where success is measured not by pounds of food distributed but by lives changed. The key is to focus on the root causes of hunger. When we shift our attention to strategies that build empathy, equity, and political will, we can implement real solutions. Martin shares those solutions in a warm, engaging style, with simple steps that anyone working or volunteering at a food bank or pantry can take today. Some are short-term strategies to create a more dignified experience for food pantry clients: providing client choice, where individuals select their own food, or redesigning a waiting room with better seating and a designated greeter. Some are longer-term: increasing the supply of healthy food, offering job training programs, or connecting clients to other social services. And some are big picture: joining the fight for living wages and a stronger social safety net. These strategies are illustrated through inspiring success stories and backed up by scientific research. Throughout, readers will find a wealth of proven ideas to make their charitable food organizations more empathetic and more effective. As Martin writes, it takes more than food to end hunger. Picking up this insightful, lively book is a great first step.

Book excerpt: Are you still playing a role you learned in childhood to please others, such as the Good Girl/Boy, the Overachiever, or the Helper? Though these kinds of roles may have gained us attention and affection, they prohibited us from becoming our true selves. People-pleasing--putting others ahead of ourselves to avoid something negative or to get something we want or need--runs rampant in our society. Saying yes when we should say no leaves us stuck in frustrating patterns. And when we don’t say yes authentically, we say it resentfully, which leads to more problems than if we'd said no in the first place. The Joy of Saying No will help you identify your people-pleasing style and habits. A six-step framework then teaches you how to discover the healing and transformative power of no to establish healthier boundaries, foster more intimate relationships and fulfilling experiences, and reconnect with your values and authentic self.

Book Fatal Denial

  • Author : Annie Menzel
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2024-05-28
  • ISBN : 0520969650
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Fatal Denial written by Annie Menzel and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatal Denial argues that over the past 150 years, US health authorities’ explanations of and interventions into Black infant mortality have been characterized by the "biopolitics of racial innocence," a term describing the institutionalized mechanisms in health care and policy that have at once obscured, enabled, and perpetuated systemic infanticide by blaming Black mothers and communities themselves. Following Black feminist scholarship demonstrating that the commodification and theft of Black women’s reproductive bodies, labors, and care is foundational to US racial capitalism, Annie Menzel posits that the polity has made Black infants vulnerable to preventable death. Drawing on key Black political thought and praxis around infant mortality—from W.E.B. Du Bois and Mary Church Terrell to Black midwives and birth workers—this work also tracks continued refusals to acknowledge this routinized reproductive violence, illuminating both a rich history of care and the possibility of more transformative futures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even If Im Not Here, author Gabby Babas second published collection of poetry, presents verses that explore human life in all its aspects, considering our complexity when we are at our most unprotected. Through vibrant description and stark imagery, she strips the body of language to its flesh, exposing humanitys most untouchable experiences. With vehemence, Baba dives deeply into close observation and imagination of life, unafraid of either vulnerability or villainy. Her poems allow us to lose ourselves in human emotion and become part of something larger than the words themselves. They seek peace in times of solitude and embrace a flawed world filled with tragedy and dysfunction, revealing a young and restless soul wandering the world. Compelling and heartfelt, this collection of poetry takes a vivid and imaginative approach to the examination of human experience and sexuality. Remember These Words People arent mysterious. Im not mysterious. Youre not mysterious. Stop trying to be interesting. Be interested.

But when he realises that no help is coming, he ventures into this unrecognisable world. Alongside green-fingered Hannah and her teenage son Seb, Adrien sets out to find his wife and to discover just how deep the forest goes. Book excerpt: As a spy prepared to give away America’s biggest secrets after the 9/11 attacks, an FBI agent raced to catch her. U.S. government officials knew they had a spy. But it never occurred to them it was a woman—and certainly not a superstar Defense Intelligence Agency employee known as “the Queen of Cuba.” Ana Montes had spent seventeen years spying for the Cubans. She had been raised in a patriotic Puerto Rican household: Her father, a psychiatrist, was a former colonel in the U.S. Army. Her sister worked as a translator for the FBI and helped break up a ring of Cuban spies in Miami. Her brother was also a loyal FBI agent. Montes impressed her bosses, but in secret, spent her breaks memorizing top secret documents before sending them to the Cuban government. She received no payment, even as one of her missives could have brought her the death penalty. She also listened to anxiety-relief tapes, took medication, and saw a psychiatrist. She dreamed of a normal life where she could work a job she enjoyed. She dreamed of getting married, and even had a man in mind: a defense analyst on the Cuba account for Southern Command. He had no idea that, three times a week, Montes pulled a short-wave radio from her closet and received encrypted messages from Cuba. After the 9/11 attacks, Cuba wanted Montes to continue her work. They couldn’t know the FBI was already on to her. Retired FBI agent Peter J. Lapp explains the clues—including never-released information—that led their team to catch one of the United States’ most dangerous spies.
