Book excerpt: Off Beat: Pluralizing Rhythm draws attention to rhythm as a tool for analyzing various cultural objects. In fields as diverse as music, culture, nature, and economy, rhythm can be seen as a phenomenon that both connects and divides. It suggests a certain measure with which people, practices, and cultures may comply. Yet, for this very reason rhythm can also function as a field of exclusion, contestation, and debate. In that respect, rhythm possesses an underestimated meaning-creating potential. Whereas its connecting force is often accentuated in the aesthetic, political, and commercial usage of the term, the divisive aspect of rhythm is at least as important. This volume wants to rid rhythm of its harmless, nearly esoteric, reputation as a cosmic unifier by understanding it in the light of the contemporary medial turn. In the present collection of essays, we have encouraged approaches that combine political, aesthetic, musical, and theoretical dimensions of rhythm. Jan Hein Hoogstad is Assistant Professor in Comparative Literature and Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Birgitte Stougaard Pedersen is Associate Professor in the Section for Aesthetics and Culture, Department of Aesthetics and Communication, Aarhus University, Denmark.

Book Sexual Sites Seminal Attitudes

Download or read book Sexual Sites Seminal Attitudes written by Sanjay Srivastava and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004-03-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions on sexuality in the South Asian context have tended to focus largely on men`s preoccupations through notions such as `semen-anxiety`. Another restrictive framework is the excessive importance ascribed to religion in everyday life. The result has been a rather narrow debate on sexuality. By providing accounts of a myriad sites and meanings of sexuality, this remarkable volume broadens the debate on sexuality in South Asia. It combines perspectives from history, anthropology, and cultural and literary studies to provide an interdisciplinary exploration of the cultures of, and the multiple meanings and contestations that gather around, masculinities and sexualities. The collection is unique in the breadth of its theoretical concerns; its focus on hitherto marginalized sexual identities; and its novel juxtapositions of analyses of colonial discourses with those of postcolonised modernity.

Book Shooting the Family

Download or read book Shooting the Family written by Patricia Pisters and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shooting the Family, a collection of essays on the contemporary media landscape, explores ever-changing representations of family life on a global scale. The contributors argue that new recording technologies allows families an unusual kind of freedom—until now unknown—to define and respond to their own lives and memories. Recently released videos made by young émigrés as they discover new homelands and resolve conflicts with their parents, for example, reverberate alongside the dark portrayals of family life in the formal filmmaking of Ang Lee. This book will be a boon to scholars of film theory and media studies, as well as to anyone interested in the construction of the family in a postmodern world.

This book was released on 2005-03-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship on Japan has recently broadened to include minority perspectives on communities from marginal workers to those whose sexuality has long been overlooked. This volume, with its combination of fieldwork in the gay and lesbian communities and the use of historical sources such as journals and documents, breaks important new ground in this field. It examines gay life in the Japanese Pacific War, addresses transgender and lesbian as well as gay issues, examines the interface of queer society with the U.S. occupation and the international community, contests major interpretations of contemporary queer society, and introduces readers to the development of lesbian, transgender, and gay communities in postwar Japan.Queer Japan from the Pacific Age to the Internet Age provides a historical outline of the development of sexual-minority identity categories and community formation through a detailed analysis of both niche and mainstream publications, including magazines, newspapers, biographies, memoirs, and Internet sites. The material is also augmented with interview data from individuals who have had a long association with Japan's queer cultures.Including a wealth of images from the "perverse press," this book will appeal to students and general readers interested in modern and contemporary Japan and in gender studies and sexuality.
