Book NGOs and Civil Society in Thailand

Download or read book NGOs and Civil Society in Thailand written by Theerapat Ungsuchaval and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NGOs and Civil Society in Thailand critically examines the relationships of civil society to nongovernmental organisations in Thailand, and examines the ‘NGOisation’ of civil society, how NGOs are funded and governed, and in what way the NGOs has been shaped to work with the funder. NGOisation is a phenomenon by which the funded organisations are impelled to transform suit their funder as reliable partners. Focusing on Thailand, an Asian country where NGOs have been heavily relied on the public sector for funding, the book analyses the relations between NGOs and their significant funder, Thailand Health Promotion Foundation (THPF), one of the biggest and most influential players in the NGO sector. As the NGO funded organisations are impelled to transform and adapt to become more professionalised, institutionalised, bureaucratised, and depoliticised to suit their funder as reliable partners, their characteristics and relations with the state are complex and interactive. Engaging with key stakeholders in the field of NGO and public governance in Thailand, the book demonstrates how THPF changed the NGO landscape, integrating them and innovatively coordinating non-state initiatives into public governance system. A novel contribution to the study of NGOs and the state, the book also addresses NGO transformation, politics, and governance. It will be of interest to academics working on Asian Politics, civil society, public policy and public management.

Book Democracy and National Identity in Thailand

Download or read book Democracy and National Identity in Thailand written by Michael Kelly Connors and published by NIAS Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition of the widely praised Democracy and National Identity in Thailand provides readers with a fascinating discussion of how debates about democracy and national identity in Thailand have evolved from the period of counter-insurgency in the 1960s to the current period. Focusing on state and civil society centered democratic projects, Connors uses original Thai language sources to trace how the Thai state developed a democratic ideology that meshed with idealized notions of Thai identity, focusing on the monarchy. The book moves on to explore how non-state actors have mobilized notions of democracy and national identity in their battle against authoritarian rule. It also invites readers to explore democratic ideology as a form of power aimed at creating ideal citizens able to support elite national projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Thailand the Test Case for Asian Development? That is the issue that caught my imagination and attracted me to teach and research in Thailand in 1964 and it has caught my constant attention over the years to the processes that were applied to help that nation develop. the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) financing of the Bhumipol (Yanhee) Dam at Tak in Northwest Thailand as a study of how corruption can be eliminated in development is to vital a testament of "how to control corruption" that it must be told! Yes, it is possible to eliminate corruption! But it takes patience and determination on the part of the financing agency and administrators! It takes time! Yet once achieved the citizens have pride in its integrity! By 1972-3 Thailand had developed more than a dozen colleges and universities and finally the Ministry of Education permitted the establishment of a private college with the founding of Bangkok College. discussions began for the founding of a Christian college and in 1974 Payap college was founded in Chiang Mai with 204 students. Private colleges operated as tuition charging institutions and manages to grow rapidly. In 1985 Payap College was able to meet the requirement of the Ministry for certification as the first private University in Thailand. Today that Payap University enrolls nearly 8,000 students in more than 24 different degree programs. As these processes of development and educational advancement have been going on in Thailand political development has also been maturing. Where since 1932, Thailand has been known as a "Land of the Coups" there has been change when for example a prime minister has decided to "resign" rather than waiting to be couped; and after a particularly violent coup in 1991, the coupmakers are shown on TV in the monarch's presence. Generals do not enjoy being embarrassed and are now significantly more restrained. When an election can be peacefully conducted and a woman elected prime minister, politics has made real progress! Even so, as Thailand floods, the political infighting is becoming vicious and we hold our breath and pray that the generals restrain!
