Book excerpt: First published in 1954, Thackeray is intended as a reminder that Thackeray is, after all, a great novelist. Professor Tillotson, admiring the novels as great literature, explores their common characteristics and those they share with the rest of Thackeray’s writings – for he sees Thackeray’s work as all of a piece. He is particularly interested in Thackeray’s methods of narration and in the philosophic commentary which forms a sort of trellis for almost everything he put out. He sees him mainly as a writer who, subtle as he is, address himself to readers honoured as ordinary human beings. In two appendices, Professor Tillotson deals with two particular modern opinions – that Thackeray spoiled his novels by an ‘infiltration’ into them of his own biography, and that he has no place in the great novel tradition. This book will be of interest to students of literature and history.

Book excerpt: THE compilers of this dictionary must perforce, mark out for themselves, the boundary line which lie somewhere between the proper field for a dictionary and the more exhaustive field to be covered by an encyclopedia. While research connected with the works of Dickens have been carried on for years, Thackeray has been taken less often as a subject of investigation, and the book before us is the first serious attempt to offer to the public an adequate dictionary. This book is in fact an encyclopedic index to Thackeray's works. So thoroughly has this pioneer investigation been done that one misses nothing here that he finds gleaned for the Dickens Dictionary. Indeed, some advance has been made. Real places, and characters famous in politics and literature, are carefully noted, and one is surprised to find that Thackeray used so large a number of familiar names of poets and statesmen. The chief heroes and heroines, also, are traced in their varying reappearances throughout the novels and stories. This feature is of great interest in the case of Thackeray. In the Dickens Dictionary it would be of little value. In a Trollope dictionary it would be indispensable. The reappearance of a familiar fictitious character gives pleasure that novelists today seldom understand. Certainly a reader of Trollope comes in time to know Barchester people as an Englishman knows his Burke. That the genius of the novelist is in part a genius for names is shown by the fact that certain names invented by Thackeray have come to be real names. This is notably true of the Pall Mall Gazette and also the Whitehall Review, names now so real that we with difficulty associate them with the realm of make-belief. In several cases Thackeray's mistakes are noted (e.g., see Mrs. Washington), especially where he intended to state facts; and the authors have unearthed many interesting items such as those relating to the Princess Olivia and to Captain George Osborne. In some few instances under headings such as Captain Edward Strong new and valuable material has been given, having been obtained from manuscript sources. Errors in proofreading are so few that they add to the impression of accuracy and care that pervades the book. Although A Thackeray Dictionary is primarily for reference a lover of the novelist's characters could spend delightful hours in turning these pages, every one of which bears a familiar name, and a well remembered description from Thackeray's own pen or a brief summary of a famous story. Before us pass Lady Castlewood with her pack of barking spaniels, Barry Lyndon the Irish adventurer, the Newcomes, the Pendennises, the Queen of Crim Tartary and Captain Strong, a friend to all the world. To thousands of readers these are very real people, and this record of them, prepared by Miss Mudge and Miss Sears, will be of constant service and delight. -Library Journal, Volume 35

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thackeray Dictionary: The Characters and Scenes of the Novels and Short Stories Alphabetically Arranged Though the popular interest in Dickens has called forth various Dickens Dictionaries, there has so far been no corresponding reference book for the novels of his great contemporary. To supply this need is the aim of the present Thackeray Dictionary. As pioneers in the field the compilers have not been so ambitious as to attempt absolute completeness. It might be interesting and desirable to have a real Thackeray Encyclopaedia which should contain information on all points connected, in any way with Thackeray's writings. The present work, however, is simply a dictionary of the novels and of such of the short stories as are to be found in the Biographical edition of Thackeray's works published by Messrs. Smith, Elder, and Co. In view of the fact that so many of Thackeray's shorter pieces are midway in form between an essay or sketch and a short story, the term short story has been considered as sufficiently elastic to cover such sketches as contain either definite character drawing or many fictitious names. The best example of this is the Book of Snobs. The aim has been to include in the Dictionary the names of all characters, either fictitious or historical, that take a definite part, however small, in the action of a novel or short story. Allusions are, of course, omitted, fictitious place names - towns, rivers, streets, etc. - are included, but real names of this sort have been, as a rule, omitted, as their inclusion would have made the list in its present form too cumbersome. Except in the case of the various burlesques historical characters have been differentiated from fictitious. Much has been written about originals, or supposed originals, of many of Thackeray's characters. In some cases Thackeray undoubtedly drew from life, but the mania for tracing prototypes has led to many identifications for which there is little foundation. Wherever the identification of a character with an original rests on good authority, the original is given here; but if the authority is questionable, the identification has not been accepted. In view of the many inaccuracies along this line, it has seemed best, in all cases, to give the authority for the identification. For some originals many authorities might be quoted. Book Thackeray

Download or read book Thackeray written by D. J. Taylor and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich and evocative portrait of one of the greatest authors of Victorian England Who was William Makepeace Thackeray? Was he the wealthy dilettante who came to London in the 1830s and squandered his fortune on newspapers? Was he the impoverished freelance author of the 1840s who scrapped for every penny he could get? Or was he the great writer who published Vanity Fair in 1847, skewering Victorian society and ensuring his literary legacy? Throughout the many phases of his life, Thackeray remained an enigma. He was friendly but standoffish, generous yet miserly, confident and utterly terrified of failure. A century and a half after Thackeray’s death, D. J. Taylor has produced a biography that tackles the complexities of these contradictions and restores Thackeray to his place in the literary pantheon. His fortune lost by the time he was thirty, his personal life in constant torment, Thackeray’s story is as dramatic as that of any of his characters. In Thackeray, the man can finally be seen in full.
