Book Disability Protests

Download or read book Disability Protests written by Sharon N. Barnartt and published by Gallaudet University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1952, the Federal Republic of West Germany concluded a treaty with Israel whereby the Germans had to pay three billion Deutschmarks in compensation for the Holocaust. However, the Israelis felt that Germany owed Israel a moral as well as a financial debt, and thus expected further aid and protection. Although Germany made several concessions in favour of the Jewish State, particularly in the domain of armament, as Germany's political status increased, its national interest gradually took priority over that of Israel. George Lavy examines the grounds which motivated Germany to grant aid to Israel and the change in their relations as the German economy flourished and gained influence in world affairs.

Book excerpt: A look at the gulf that separates the deaf minority from the hearing world, this book sheds light on the mistreatment of the deaf community by a hearing establishment that resists understanding and awareness. Critically acclaimed as a breakthrough when it was first published in 1992, this new edition includes information on the science and ethics of childhood cochlear implants. An indictment of the ways in which experts in the scientific, medical, and educational establishment purport to serve the deaf, this bookdescribes how they, in fact, do them great harm."

Book Ireland and the Irish

Download or read book Ireland and the Irish written by John Ardagh and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This perceptive and highly readable book is primarily about the Republic and how it has changed profoundly over the past forty years, as a traditional rural-based society has adapted to a wider modern world. Once so enclosed, the Irish are now committed Europeans and have gained much from Europe. They have banished their old poverty, modernized their economy and lifestyles - but are they losing the old 'Irish' values? On this the nation is split, as a powerful Catholic Church sees its authority contested and social change leads to moral confusion." "Ardagh has talked with President Mary Robinson, Gay Byrne, the king of Irish TV, Eamonn Casey, the disgraced ex-Bishop of Galway, and countless others. His book ranges widely, from the Dublin slums to the fate of the small Mayo farms; it takes in the changing role of women, the young novelists, the music revival, the fight for the Irish language, the new-style emigrants, the creaking political system." "The long chapter on the North gives an upbeat picture of the patient grass-roots efforts at reconciliation, and of how a resilient people continue normal life in the shadow of the ongoing conflict. The logic of history may well lead to a united Ireland - but not by any means yet."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book The Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies in Language

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies in Language written by Marc Marschark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language development, and the challenges it can present for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, have long been a focus of research, theory, and practice in D/deaf studies and deaf education. Over the past 150 years, but most especially near the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century, advances in the acquisition and development of language competencies and skills have been increasing rapidly. This volume addresses many of those accomplishments as well as remaining challenges and new questions that have arisen from multiple perspectives: theoretical, linguistic, social-emotional, neuro-biological, and socio-cultural. Contributors comprise an international group of prominent scholars and practitioners from a variety of academic and clinical backgrounds. The result is a volume that addresses, in detail, current knowledge, emerging questions, and innovative educational practice in a variety of contexts. The volume takes on topics such as discussion of the transformation of efforts to identify a "best" language approach (the "sign" versus "speech" debate) to a stronger focus on individual strengths, potentials, and choices for selecting and even combining approaches; the effects of language on other areas of development as well as effects from other domains on language itself; and how neurological, socio-cognitive, and linguistic bases of learning are leading to more specialized approaches to instruction that address the challenges that remain for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. This volume both complements and extends The Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, Volumes 1 and 2, going further into the unique challenges and demands for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals than any other text and providing not only compilations of what is known but setting the course for investigating what is still to be learned.

Book Learning from Comparing new directions in comparative education research

Download or read book Learning from Comparing new directions in comparative education research written by Robin Alexander and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Learning from Comparing' is a major two-volume study which reassesses the contribution of comparative educational research and theory to our understanding of contemporary educational problems and to our capacity to solve them. At a time when educational research is under attack on the grounds of ‘bias’ and ‘irrelevance’, and under pressure to address only those questions which are acceptable politically (as good a definition of bias as any), this is a serious attempt to bridge the worlds of research, policy and practice. The editors have put together a collection – in terms of both perspective and nationality – which ensures contrasting viewpoints on each topic.
