Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume, Thorium C5, deals with the compounds of thorium and sulfur, selenium, tellurium, and boron, as well as with oxoacid compounds of the three chalcogen elements. Thorium borates have already been treated in Thorium C2. In contrast to the corresponding compounds of uranium the thorium sulfides, etc. , do not show any nuclear or other technological application; they are only of academic interest, despite some very interest ing electronic properties, especially of the 1 : 1 compounds. The thorium-sulfur and the thorium boron systems in particular were studied in detail, so that we have a clear picture of them, whereas there are still a lot of open questions in the systems Th-Se and Th-Te - not very different from other metal chalcogenide systems. Thorium sulfates are of some technological importance because they are formed in solution during recovery of thorium from monazite by sulfuric acid leaching. The very detailed and critical treatment of the chemical and physical properties of the compounds discussed also enables us to find gaps still remaining in our knowledge and thus to initiate new research in this field. I want to thank the two authors, Dr. Horst Wedemeyer (Karlsruhe) and Dr. David Brown (Harwell), for their excellent contributions, the "Literaturabteilung" of the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center for its help in providing reports and other documents difficult to procure, as well as the staff of the Gmelin-Institute, especially to Dr. K. -C.

Book The Basics of Item Response Theory Using R

Download or read book The Basics of Item Response Theory Using R written by Frank B. Baker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate-level textbook is a tutorial for item response theory that covers both the basics of item response theory and the use of R for preparing graphical presentation in writings about the theory. Item response theory has become one of the most powerful tools used in test construction, yet one of the barriers to learning and applying it is the considerable amount of sophisticated computational effort required to illustrate even the simplest concepts. This text provides the reader access to the basic concepts of item response theory freed of the tedious underlying calculations. It is intended for those who possess limited knowledge of educational measurement and psychometrics. Rather than presenting the full scope of item response theory, this textbook is concise and practical and presents basic concepts without becoming enmeshed in underlying mathematical and computational complexities. Clearly written text and succinct R code allow anyone familiar with statistical concepts to explore and apply item response theory in a practical way. In addition to students of educational measurement, this text will be valuable to measurement specialists working in testing programs at any level and who need an understanding of item response theory in order to evaluate its potential in their settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australia in 2010, “drug barons” of considerable influence in the community rule the roost, prompting the government to commission an elite force known as the Strategic Intelligence Service to combat the country’s current state of affairs. The S.I.S., commanded by Major Hutchinson, was allocated the decommissioned Silverwater Jail as his H.Q., and emergency powers to cut through the red tape. The group’s goal is to eradicate the drug barons by covertly abducting them and sending them where they could do no harm, using their confiscated bank accounts to finance rehabilitation centres for addicts, and dispatching their teenage drug dealer gangs to an education programme in the Simpson Desert. Camps to house and educate siblings are commissioned to hold the children until their parents are ready to reassume responsibility. Everything was working as planned, until a group of siblings are kidnapped en route to a reunion with their parents at Florinda Ridge. The ransom demands the drug barons’ release and the return of their funds within six days, or the captives will be pulverized. When Major Hutchinson discovers there’s a mole in his ranks, the fate of the hostages becomes critical, and the rule book goes out the window. The major has to solve these problems by using the very people he was being paid to protect.

Book excerpt: Since the discovery of X-ray diffraction in 1913 over 100 000 different inorganic substances (also called compounds or phases) have been structurally characterized. The aim of this reference work is to provide the researcher with a comprehensive compilation of all up to now crystallographically identified inorganic substances in only one volume. All data have been processed and critically evaluated by the "Pauling File" editorial team using a unique software package. Each substance is represented in a single row containing information adapted to the number of chemical elements.
