Issue d'une réflexion sur les bouleversements scientifiques du début du xxe siècle, et en particulier sur la théorie de la relativité, dont il a été l'un des tout premiers à prendre la mesure, la philosophie de la connaissance de Schlick prend ses distances tant avec l'idée kantienne de principes synthétiques a priori imprimant leurs formes à la réalité qu'avec le positivisme et l'empirisme traditionnel, incapables, à ses yeux, de rendre compte de théories dont les constructions conceptuelles ne peuvent plus être considérées comme de simples résumés d'observations empiriques. Au fil d'une confrontation avec les diverses philosophies de la connaissance, classiques ou contemporaines, de Descartes à Husserl, en passant par le néokantisme et Bergson, Schlick défend ainsi un réalisme critique qui récuse aussi bien l'idéalisme transcendantal kantien que les " pensées de l'immanence " de Mach ou de Russell, et développe une position originale sur des questions comme celles de la nature de la connaissance, du rapport entre la logique et la psychologie ou de l'âme et du corps. Le livre exercera une grande influence sur les discussions philosophiques des années 1920 et 1930. Il constitue une contribution décisive au débat contemporain en philosophie de la connaissance.

The theme selected for the meeting in Finland was Problems in the Theory of Knowledge (Probtemes de la tMorie de la connaissance). The Entretiens de Helsinki took place from 24th to 27th August 1970. As local host organization, the Philosophical Society of Finland was responsible for the external and social arrangements of the Entretiens. A grant from the Finnish Ministry of Education and the Oskar Oflund Foundation had been obtained for the purpose. 40 members of the Institut participated in the Entretiens. The various sessions, which were also open to members of the Philosophical Society of Finland, were attended by on average 100 people.

Zürich, April 1973 Mario Bunge From the Preface to the First Edition It may seem odd that aseries of works devoted to the natural sciences should indude - indeed begin with - a volume on phi losophy. Today, of course, it is generally agreed that philosophy and natural science are perfectly compatible. But to grant the theory of knowledge such a prominent position implies not only that these two fields are compatible, but that there is a natural connection between them. Thus the indusion of this book in the series can be justified only if such an intimate relation of mutual dependence and interpenetration really does exist. Without anticipating what is to come, the author would like first to explain his point of view on the relationship between epistemology and the sciences, and in so doing make dear at the outset the method to be followed in this book. It is my view - which I have already expressed elsewhere and which I never tire of repeating - that philosophy is not aseparate science to be placed alongside of or above the individual disciplines. Rather, the philosophical element is present in all of the scienccs; it is their true soul, and only by virtue of it are they sciences at all.
