The multiresolution Fourier transform (MFT) is utilized as a framework to derive a robust algorithm which estimates textural features over a range of spatial scales based on local frequency domain properties. A pair of centroids of local spectra are extracted to represent the dominant frequencies of underlying spatial regions which are equivariant to rotation and scaling. Based on these centroids, the relationship between two different local spectra is characterized by an affine transformation. Assessment of the estimated affine transform is made by normalized correlation, which also provides local phase shift information. Analysis and synthesis of both artificial and natural images demonstrate the capability of the algorithm."

Book excerpt: The international multi-topic conference IMTIC 2008 was held in Pakistan during April 11–12, 2008. It was a joint venture between Mehran University, Jamshoro, Sindh and Aalborg University, Esbjerg, Denmark. Apart from the two-day main event, two workshops were also held: the Workshop on Creating Social Semantic Web 2.0 Information Spaces and the Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks. Two hundred participants registered for the main conference from 24 countries and 43 papers were presented; the two workshops had overwhelming support and over 400 delegates registered. IMTIC 2008 served as a platform for international scientists and the engineering community in general, and in particular for local scientists and the engineering c- munity to share and cooperate in various fields of interest. The topics presented had a reasonable balance between theory and practice in multidisciplinary topics. The c- ference also had excellent topics covered by the keynote speeches keeping in view the local requirements, which served as a stimulus for students as well as experienced participants. The Program Committee and various other committees were experts in their areas and each paper went through a double-blind peer review process. The c- ference received 135 submissions of which only 46 papers were selected for presen- tion: an acceptance rate of 34%.

Book excerpt: A novel method is proposed for synthesizing a gray scale texture using a binary stochastic model and a multi-resolution transformation. A binary texture is produced from the stochastic model, after which a crude multi-resolution transformation is applied to the binary data producing a gray scale texture that corresponds to the binary model. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to find a best-fitting binary model, a partially ordered Markov model (POMM), that best generates a given reference gray scale texture. Binary POMMs have had good success in representing a wide variety of binary textures. The fitness function used for the GA is based on the histogram of (binary) image values at certain fixed sets of pixel locations for each bit plane of the gray scale texture that corresponds to the current binary texture solution. Once a good solution (binary POMM) has been found, a gray scale texture is created by producing a binary texture from this POMM, and applying the multi-resolution transform. The fixed sets of pixel locations used for calculating the fitness function are found using a (different) GA. These fixed sets are called foot patterns. A GA is used to find a foot pattern for each bit plane of the reference gray scale texture. The method is novel because the representation by POMMs of binary data is very concise, leading to data representation of gray scale textures by a very small amount of information, namely, the binary POMM. This technique has applications in data transmission and data storage of gray scale imagery.
