Book excerpt: An increasing number of U.S. Latinos are seeking to become more proficient in Spanish. The Spanish they may have been exposed to in childhood may not be sufficient when they find themselves as adults in more demanding environments, academic or professional. Heritage language learners appear in a wide spectrum of proficiency, from those who have a low level of speaking abilities, to those who may have a higher degree of bilingualism, but not fluent. Whatever the individual case may be, these heritage speakers of Spanish have different linguistic and pedagogical needs than those students learning Spanish as a second or foreign language. The members of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) have identified teaching heritage learners as their second greatest area of concern (after proficiency testing). Editors Ana Roca and Cecilia Colombi saw a great need for greater availability and dissemination of scholarly research in applied linguistics and pedagogy that address the development and maintenance of Spanish as a heritage language and the teaching of Spanish to U.S. Hispanic bilingual students in grades K-16. The result is Mi lengua: Spanish as a Heritage Language in the United States. Mi lengua delves into the research, theory, and practice of teaching Spanish as a heritage language in the United States. The editors and contributors examine theoretical considerations in the field of Heritage Language Development (HLD) as well as community and classroom-based research studies at the elementary, secondary, and university levels. Some chapters are written in Spanish and each chapter presents a practical section on pedagogical implications that provides practice-related suggestions for the teaching of Spanish as a heritage language to students from elementary grades to secondary and college and university levels.

The book is divided in two parts. The first part presents studies that unveil the psychosocial implications of poverty by revealing the processes of domination based on the stigmatization and criminalization of poor people, which contribute to maintain realities of social inequality. The second part presents studies focused on strategies to fight poverty and forms of resistance developed by individuals who are in situations of marginalization. The studies presented in this contributed volume depart from the theoretical framework developed by Critical Social Psychology, Community Psychology and Liberation Psychology, in an effort to understand poverty beyond its monetary dimension, bringing social, cultural, structural and subjective factors into the analysis. Psychological science in general has not produced specific knowledge about poverty as a result of the relations of domination produced by social inequalities fostered by the capitalist system. Slavery was abolished in 1886, but, one hundred years later, Cuban authors were still writing antislavery narratives. William Luis explores this seeming paradox in his groundbreaking study Literary Bondage, asking why this literary genre has remained a viable means of expression. Applying Foucault's theory of counter-discourse to a vast body of antislavery literature, Luis shows how these narratives have always served to undermine the foundations of slavery, to protest the marginalized status of blacks in Cuban society, and to rewrite the canon of "acceptable" history and literature. He finds that emancipation did not end the need for such counter-discourse and reveals how the antislavery narrative continues to provide a forum for voices that have been silenced by the dominant culture. In addition to such well-known works as Cecilia Valdés, The Kingdom of This World, and The Autobiography of a Runaway Slave, Luis draws on many literary works outside the familiar canon, including Romualdo, uno de tantos, Aponte, SofíaLa familia Unzúazu, El negrero, and Los guerrilleros negros. This comprehensive coverage raises important questions about the process of canon-formation and brings to light Cuba's rich heritage of Afro-Latin literature and culture.

In order to enhance rights of children and their well being, NGOs play a very important role whereby they provide child sponsorship programs. Their accomplishment in raising finances over the last decade has positioned them in the midst of the largest and most common aid organizations at large. From this point of view, the juvenile victim of human trafficking and other crime will bear the stigma almost all her life, with possible consequences on her reproductive health, on her psychology of mother, wife, educator, in short, on her network relational. This state of affairs puts back on the agenda the urgent problem of institutional support to juvenile victim of human trafficking and other crime, incest being considered taboo, as a social prohibition in many cultures of different parts of the countries. But there have been concerns raised about the methods and lapses these NGOs play in the oversight and practices relating to the programs. Indeed, how can we gauge state governance vis-à-vis this situation that becomes a real issue? What are the actions of policy makers as well as NGOs in the follow-up and psychosocial reintegration of juvenile victim of human trafficking and other crime and also examine the consequence of headship and organizational effectiveness? How important are they to taking into account issues related to the human trafficking and violence against inmates is exercised against them? What concrete proposals can be made to support the political forces in the fight against this specific type of violence against children? How these problems can be highlighted in their political aspect and can be drawn out of the darkness where they have been relegated and neglected? Another area which the researcher tries to understand through this dissertation is that since there is a lot of difference between the environment in an institutional home and a normal home, cases have been found where children from these institutional homes have tried to run away because of reasons that may range from ill treatment to lack of providing proper food. Hence through this project researcher tries to focus upon this area. Seeking to find answers to this questioning, the present work proposes to make a socio-critical analysis of the politico-institutional dynamics on the question. It is a socio-anthropological analysis that seeks to identify the strengths and weaknesses of governance in this area and reveal the scandal by the detailed description of the various forms of human trafficking and indicating how these practices were concealed and ignored although they constitutes acts of high crime, with the aim of developing concrete proposals that can help policy makers in their possible interventions in this direction. To achieve this, methodological prescriptions have been respected. One years ago, the anthology Kosish (Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, 2018) was published, in which various experts discussed the importance of empirical research for different policy and prevention practice related to inmates residing in shelter home and human trafficking.

This was the challenge faced by Latin American women who aspired to write in the 1920s and 1930s. Though women's roles were opening up during this time, women writers were not automatically welcomed by the Latin American literary avant-gardes, whose male members viewed women's participation in tertulias (literary gatherings) and publications as uncommon and even forbidding. How did Latin American women writers, celebrated by male writers as the "New Eve" but distrusted as fellow creators, find their intellectual homes and fashion their artistic missions? In this innovative book, Vicky Unruh explores how women writers of the vanguard period often gained access to literary life as public performers. Using a novel, interdisciplinary synthesis of performance theory, she shows how Latin American women's work in theatre, poetry declamation, song, dance, oration, witty display, and bold journalistic self-portraiture helped them craft their public personas as writers and shaped their singular forms of analytical thought, cultural critique, and literary style. Concentrating on eleven writers from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, Unruh demonstrates that, as these women identified themselves as instigators of change rather than as passive muses, they unleashed penetrating critiques of projects for social and artistic modernization in Latin America.
