Download or read book Digilect written by Ágnes Veszelszki and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high degree of internet penetration and its social (and linguistic) effects evidently influence how people, and especially the highly susceptible younger generations, use language. The primary aim of the book is not only to identify the characteristic features of the digital language variety (this has already been done by several works) but to examine how digital communication affects the language of other mediums of communication: orality, handwritten texts, digitally created but not digitally perceived, that is printed texts, including in particular advertisements (which quickly respond to linguistic change). Naturally, the book presents the characteristics of the digital language variety (and coins the term digilect) but only to give a framework to the impact analysis. It is important to document changes in progress and thus direct attention to potential outcomes. The current linguistic change is different from previous ones primarily in its speed and form of spreading, and it not only brings innovative grammatical forms and writing/spelling solutions but may also have far-reaching cultural and educational consequences in the long run.

Book Language and Intercultural Communication in the New Era

Download or read book Language and Intercultural Communication in the New Era written by Farzad Sharifian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of intercultural communication in applied linguistics initially focused on miscommunication, mainly between native and non-native speakers of English. The advent of the twenty-first century has witnessed, however, a revolution in the contexts and contents of intercultural communication; technological advances such as chat rooms, emails, personal weblogs, Facebook, Twitter, mobile text messaging on the one hand, and the accelerated pace of people’s international mobility on the other have given a new meaning to the term 'intercultural communication'. Given the remarkable growth in the prevalence of intercultural communication among people from many cultural backgrounds, and across many contexts and channels, conceptual divides such as 'native/non-native' are now almost irrelevant. This has caused the power attached to English and native speaker-like English to lose much of its automatic domination. Such developments have provided new opportunities, as well as challenges, for the study of intercultural communication and its increasingly complex nature. This book showcases recent studies in the field in a multitude of contexts to enable a collective effort towards advancements in the area.

Book Social Media and Integrated Marketing Communication

Download or read book Social Media and Integrated Marketing Communication written by Jeanne M. Persuit and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Media and Integrated Marketing Communication: A Rhetorical Approach explores social media in the areas of corporate identity, brand narratives, and crisis response from a rhetorical perspective. Key ideas in this text are social media as epideictic rhetoric—the rhetorical setting that deals with the present and matters of virtue and education—and how rhetorical decorum, a component of Cicero’s third Canon of Style, can guide organizations and their audiences toward more ethical and effective integrated marketing communication (IMC). This strategy emphasizes changing behavior, not just attitudes. Because social media leaves traces of communication that may be with us for the foreseeable future, Social Media and Integrated Marketing Communication frames the conversation about social media and IMC to move away from a risk/reward or a return on investment orientation and toward a focus on social media as communicative action that is attentive to this historical moment, to organizations and their audiences, and to communication ethics. Through this, Persuit asks how organizations can engage in decorum in their online IMC efforts while at the same time considering how their audiences can engage in decorum as well. Neither romanticizing nor demonizing the areas of social media and IMC, instead, this text offers a pragmatic understanding of these areas that finds a place in the theory of the communication discipline.

Book Cyberpragmatics

Download or read book Cyberpragmatics written by Francisco Yus and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyberpragmatics is an analysis of Internet-mediated communication from the perspective of cognitive pragmatics. It addresses a whole range of interactions that can be found on the Net: the web page, chat rooms, instant messaging, social networking sites, 3D virtual worlds, blogs, videoconference, e-mail, Twitter, etc. Of special interest is the role of intentions and the quality of interpretations when these Internet-mediated interactions take place, which is often affected by the textual properties of the medium. The book also analyses the pragmatic implications of transferring offline discourses (e.g. printed paper, advertisements) to the screen-framed space of the Net. And although the main framework is cognitive pragmatics, the book also draws from other theories and models in order to build up a better picture of what really happens when people communicate on the Net. This book will interest analysts doing research on computer-mediated communication, university students and researchers undergoing post-graduate courses or writing a PhD thesis. Book Authorship attribution in Turkish Texts

Download or read book Authorship attribution in Turkish Texts written by Hülya Kocagül Yüzer and published by Artsürem. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest developments in the field of computer technology have created new ways to share information without time and space limits. Computer technologies have not only made life easier and more accessible for users, but they have also opened up a new arena for illegal activities. These illegal actions have found an opportunity to spread via e-mails, websites, Internet chat rooms, forum pages, and social networking websites (like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Online contributors do not need to provide information such as their real names, the city where they live, age or gender in order to share their opinions, and such feelings of anonymity encourage criminal activities. Thus, disputed authorship cases have become one of the main challenges of the technological era. This research is a corpus-based simulated authorship casework application in Turkish. Texts for the corpora were collected from a collaborative online encyclopaedia – Eksi Sozluk (Sour Times) and Twitter. The corpus consists of 900 texts from 52 authors in total. However, 105 texts belong to seven authors from Twitter. The two methodological approaches that were applied are qualitative and statistical methods, according to Grant’s (2013) approach. Ten different tests were applied, depending on the various parameters that are forensically possible in real-world cases. Accordingly, the role of feature type, size, including the candidate author size, text size and a limited number of texts per author and finally cross-genre application were tested. The analyses revealed that such a combined approach has promising results in some tests in that they attributed authorship in Turkish. The findings of the research indicated that there is the potential to attribute unknown authors in Turkish and it appears that the results have significant conclusions for the broader application of forensic authorship attribution techniques in Turkish texts.
