Book Text to speech and Reading While Listening Reading Support for Individuals with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

Download or read book Text to speech and Reading While Listening Reading Support for Individuals with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury written by Judy Harvey (Writer on communication disorders) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often have reading challenges. They maintain or reestablish basic decoding and word recognition skills following injury, but problems with reading comprehension often persist. Practitioners have the potential to accommodate struggling readers by changing the presentational mode of text in a variety of ways. Text-to-speech (TTS) is one way in which electronic text can be manipulated. Researchers have studied the effect of TTS in conjunction with silent reading for individuals with learning disabilities, specific reading disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and emotional behavioral disorders. However, limited research to date has addressed reading patterns and accommodations for individuals with similar cognitive impairments resulting from TBI. The purpose of this study was to investigate the rate in words per minute (WPM) at which neurotypical readers read as compared to individuals with TBI. Second, I sought to compare comprehension rate and accuracy for factual and inferential information in three contexts: (a) reading only (RO), (b) reading while listening to TTS (RL), and (c) listening only to TTS (LO). I calculated a WPM average for each experimental passage and used a paired samples t-test to determine if a significant difference existed between reading rates of participants with TBI and neurotypical readers. I employed a 3 X 2 repeated measure ANOVA across reading contexts and question type (factual versus inferential). Planned pairwise comparisons allowed determination of significant differences between modalities of listening and reading. The four major findings were: (a) individuals with TBI read significantly slower than neurotypical readers, (b) readers with TBI demonstrated significantly better performance when answering factual comprehension questions than inferential comprehension questions, (c) reading comprehension did not significantly differ across the three contexts of RO, LO, or RL, and (d) analysis of individual performance patterns revealed some participants benefitted from TTS support despite heterogeneity across participants. The clinical implication of this study is that practitioners should evaluate performances across accommodations before applying a blanket approach for reading comprehension.

Book Prisoners Without Bars

Download or read book Prisoners Without Bars written by Donna O'Donnell Figurski and published by BQB Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Laugh! Cry! G-A-S-P!" This heart-wrenching and triumphant love story is a tale of advocacy and caregiving. Donna's husband, David, stumbled into their bedroom, his hand covering a blood-filled eye from a brain hemorrhage. Donna called 9-1-1. David slipped into a coma. At that moment, Donna was thrust onto the path of caregiver for her best friend and the love of her life. In her debut memoir, Donna shares how a neurosurgeon said that David would make a "great organ donor." She writes of arrogant doctors, uncaring visitors, insensitive ambulance drivers, and problematic nurses. She also tells of the many compassionate doctors, nurses, therapists, staff, strangers, family members, and friends who helped them on their journey. Donna compellingly describes her ability to appear positive as she experiences the horror of making life-or-death decisions. As her world crashes, she credits laughter as her lifesaver. More than thirteen years later, Donna and David are living a "new normal" together.

Download or read book Communication Disorders Following Traumatic Brain Injury written by Skye McDonald and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are very few books available which are concerned with the unique communication problems that can come with traumatic brain injury (TBI). In recent years there has emerged a realisation that these difficulties in communication are closely tied to the cognitive, behavioural and social problems observed following traumatic brain injury. This is changing the way people with TBI are assessed and is generating new approaches to rehabilitation. This volume will be of interest to psychologists, speech pathologists and therapists and linguists. Clinicians and researchers working with people with traumatic brain injury, and their students, will find it a comprehensive source of contemporary approaches to characterising the communication problems of people with TBI and for planning rehabilitation.

Book Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lefaivre Rainbow Effect is a groundbreaking treatment for those suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). This strategy is different from most others because it is individually designed for each client and focuses on the cognitive retraining of the brain based on pre-injury lifestyle as well as the organic damage to the brain, rather than the disability alone. Starting in the community, after the acute and in-patient rehabilitation phases of recovery have been completed, the Lefaivre Rainbow Effect maximizes the recovery process by positioning the TBI survivor to be a motivated participant in the arduous journey of recovery. Key features: Provides tools and templates for managing the individualized treatment and integration process, including additional material available for download Addresses physical, emotional, and cognitive deficits with a strong influence on participation in life activities Includes the unique theory of the traumatically induced dysfunctional family, with the aim to preserve the family unit and reduce the overall loss for the survivor of brain injury Features a practical approach, including chapter summaries, case studies, diagrams, and templates Offers guidance on producing an Independent Medical Evaluation and preparing effectively for cross examination in recognition of the adversarial aspect of many TBI cases This essential text demonstrates how rehabilitation professionals, including occupational therapists, doctors, nurses, social workers, speech pathologists, and neuropsychologists, can use the Lefaivre Rainbow Effect in their practices to improve therapeutic outcomes for their clients.

Book Narrative Approaches to Brain Injury

Download or read book Narrative Approaches to Brain Injury written by David Todd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together narrative approaches and brain injury rehabilitation, in a manner that fosters an understanding of the natural fit between the two. We live our lives by narratives and stories, and brain injury can affect those narratives at many levels, with far-reaching effects. Understanding held narratives is as important as understanding the functional profile of the injury. This book explores ways to create a space for personal stories to emerge and change, whilst balancing theory with practical application. Despite the emphasis of this book on the compatibility of narrative approaches to supporting people following brain injury, it also illustrates the potential for contributing to significant change in the current narratives of brain injury. This book takes a philosophically different approach to many current neuro-rehabilitation topics, and has the potential to make a big impact. It also challenges the reader to question their own position, but does so in an engaging manner which makes it difficult to put down.

Book Social and Communication Disorders Following Traumatic Brain Injury

Download or read book Social and Communication Disorders Following Traumatic Brain Injury written by Skye McDonald and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can seriously disrupt the social and communication skills that are basic requirements for everyday life. It is the loss of these interpersonal skills that can be the most devastating for people with TBI and their families. Although there are many books that focus upon TBI, none focus on communication and communication skills specifically. This book fills this important gap in the literature and provides information ranging from a broad overview of the nature of pathology following TBI and its effects on cognition and behaviour, through to the latest evidence about ways to assess and treat social and communication disorders. Much has changed in the field of communication disorders and TBI since the first edition of this book was published in 1999. There have been advances in neuroimaging, providing more accurate understanding of how the brain is damaged in TBI and also insights into its repair. There has been a burgeoning interest in social cognition, and advances in how communication is conceptualized, with a particular focus on the role of how context facilitates or impedes communicative ability. Most importantly, much has changed in the arena of rehabilitation. There is now a growing evidence base of treatments aimed at improving communication problems following TBI, new resources for accessing this information and renewed interest in different kinds of methods for demonstrating treatment effects. Bringing together a range of expert international researchers interested in understanding the nature and treatment of TBI this book covers topics from understanding how the brain damage occurs, how it affects social and communication skills and how these problems might be treated. As such it will be of great interest to clinicians, postgraduate and undergraduate students and researchers in neuropsychology, speech and language pathology.
