Book Latitude Hooks and Azimuth Rings How to Build and Use 18 Traditional Navigational Tools

Download or read book Latitude Hooks and Azimuth Rings How to Build and Use 18 Traditional Navigational Tools written by Dennis Fisher and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 1995 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latitude Hooks and Azimuth Rings is for people who like to work with their hands and who appreciate traditional nautical craftsmanship. You don't have to be the master of any craft to undertake any of these projects--from a simple kamal or latitude hook to the more complex pelorus or octant--just a careful and enthusiastic worker. These 18 projects fall roughly into three categories: decorative, useful, and somewhere in between. Some, such as the astrolabe, are mainly for display. On the other hand, the sounding line is an important and practical tool for small-craft navigation, particularly in the absence of an electronic sounder. The cross-staff falls somewhere in between, equally at home in the den or the ditch kit. Each of the devices discussed here--with simple, proven building instructions complemented by clear illustrations--has at one time or another been used for the practical business of navigation, and each is worth reviving for its beauty, historic value, or sheer usefulness. Dennis Fisher has designed these projects with an emphasis on simplicity and reasonable cost. Everything can be scratch-built using easily obtainable materials and tools, and each is true to the spirit and function of the original instrument.

Download or read book Old Time Nautical Instruments Classic Reprint written by John Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old-Time Nautical Instruments Based on this instrument, by laying out the circle on a table, John Davis, the explorer, devised his quadrant in 1586. At first the observer used it by facing the sun, as the cross-staff had been used, but a better form was made later where the observer had the sun at his back. This instrument has been called by sailors jackass quad rant and, supposedly from its shape, hog yoke. In early books on navi gation it is called sea quadrant. The earlier form used by the observer standing back to the sun had a solid shade vane which slid along the smaller arc of the instrument. By adjusting this a little short of the sup posed altitude oi the sun and sighting the horizon through the minute hole in the sight vane until it was seen. Muir and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Navigation and Nautical Astronomy, Including the Theory of Compass Deviations, Prepared for Use as a Text-Book at the U. S: Naval Academy In this volume, the endeavor has been made to place under one cover the allied subjects of Navigation, Theory of Compass Deviations, and Nautical Astronomy; and, though the book has been written primarily for the use of midshipmen, it is believed that the various subjects have been so presented that any zealous student with only a slight knowledge of trigonometry may be able to master any method given. An effort has been made to include in this work not only the results of a large practical experience at sea, but information gleaned, during tours of duty in this department, from a study of the best English and American authorities. Much attention has been given to a description of the various navigational instruments, their uses, and errors; and to the principles involved in the construction of charts as well as to an account of the work usually performed on them. The Theory of the Deviations of the Compass has been presented in the popular way for the practical man, and from a mathematical standpoint for more advanced students. In Part II enough of Theoretical Astronomy has been incorporated to enable any one without a previous knowledge of that science to pursue the study of the practical part of Nautical Astronomy.
