Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Pharmacology Thanks to careful and competent training among pharmacists, the skilful preparation and dispensing Of drugs relieve the physi cian of much responsibility; yet he Should be keenly sensible Of the fact that the larger share Of public confidence is reposed in him, and by diligent study of the subject endeavor to command the minutiae Of pharmacology, holding himself morally accountable for errors quite possible in the druggist's dispensary. It may not be irrelevant to add that in all medical procedure a sympathetic yet perfectly controlled nature, ready tact, and sterling common sense are cardinal requisites to professional triumph, it being gene rally true, as was long since Observed by Hufeland, that success ful treatment requires only one-third science and two-thirds savoir faire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Materia Medica: Pharmacology and Therapeutics The book is the fruit of some twenty years' experience in teach ing therapeutics and clinical medicine, and many years of private and institutional practice. It has been my effort to embody as much as possible of this experience in a condensed, carefully classified, and usable form. Above everything else, I desire this book to be practical rather than theoretical. It is important not only that the student should acquire the largest amount pos sible of knowledge of the remedies which he expects to use in the practice of medicine, but also that this knowledge should be systematically and logically arranged, so that it may become immediately available. I believe that the classification which I have adopted particularly lends itself to that end, and that it will greatly facilitate the study of this important branch of medicine. While the needs of the student have been kept in the fore ground, I have not forgotten the demands which are made upon it by the practising physician. I have, therefore, endeavored to make the subject-matter as complete and as detailed as the size of such a work will permit, and to give Special prominence to the therapeutic sections. In this field I have drawn largely upon my own experience, not forgetting the larger mine of current medical literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pharmacology and Therapeutics In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States Pharmacopoeia, so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The eighth decennial revision of the Pharmacopoeia has given the many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two dis tinct parts, the first being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy, and this, the second, to Pharmacology and Thera peutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work the classification employed is based on'jtqie par ticular physiological systems upon which the various drugs or other agents principally act. There is a complete list of drugs and preparations, without special description, except as to dosage, and very elaborate accounts of their physiological action and therapeutics are given. In these descriptions the effort has been made to present the latest views of the highest authorities in these departments, and to render the book as practically use ful as possible by full details regarding treatment. The two works combined offer, it is believed, a very complete and up to - date presentation of the whole subject of Materia Medica and Therapeutics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materia Medica and Pharmacy In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States pharmacopmia so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The forthcoming revision of the Pharmac0paeia has given the Opportunity. The many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two distinct parts; this, the first, being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy and the second to Pharmacology and Therapeutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work full atten tion is given to pharmaceutical processes, to the various kinds of preparations, with their dosage, and to the art of prescrib ing; after which the description of remedies is taken up in detail. The list of therapeutic agents is divided into two main parts, under the heads of Inorganic and Organic Materia Medica, and the general classification adopted is one based on the grouping of the articles according to the class and chemical division or natural order to which each belongs. In order to make the book more complete, condensed descriptions of the action and therapeutic use of all the remedies have been ap pended. Book A Manual of Pharmacology and Its Applications to Therapeutics and Toxicology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Pharmacology and Its Applications to Therapeutics and Toxicology Classic Reprint written by TORALD. SOLLMANN and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Pharmacology and Its Applications to Therapeutics and Toxicology The volume can, therefore, serve both for study and reference. There may be some question as to the general advisability of combining text-books and reference books; but in Pharmacology this appears to be necessary, since every student may need more detailed information at any time. These objects necessitated a complete rearrangement, and fairly extensive enlargement of the book, and as the work progressed, it appeared plain that it meant not merely a revision, but the making of an entirely new book. With this enlargement of the text, it became necessary to practice the utmost economy of matter, in order to bring the contents within a single volume. This and other considerations prompted the separation of the 'laboratory Guide In Pharmacology, which will be issued as a companion volume. The illustrations have also been omitted wherever the text could be understood without them. A further economy was effected by cur tailing the discussion of the drugs of slight importance, thus leaving more space for the relatively few really important drugs. This is in line with the modern movement for the restriction of the Materia Medica. I am greatly indebted to my friend, Dr. R. A. Hatcher, for valuable help in reading the proofs. Download or read book A Textbook of Pharmacology and Therapeutics Or the Action of Drugs in Health and Disease Classic Reprint written by Arthur Robertson Cushny and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, or the Action of Drugs in Health and Disease Dcmc the eighteen months which have elapsed since the appear ance of the second edition, several important advances have been made in pharmacology, necessitating corresponding changes in the text. The most interesting of these advances is the authoritative and, it is to be hoped, final determination of the food value of alcohol, which has been treated in more detail than in former editions. The increasing use of cocaine as a local anesthetic, and the introduction of the subarachnoid method of medication required an expansion of the chapter on this drug, and the same may be said of the pages devoted to the adrenal gland. Numerous minor changes have been made to bring the text up to date and several new illustrations have been added. Book Dental Materia Medica Therapeutics and Prescription Writing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dental Materia Medica Therapeutics and Prescription Writing Classic Reprint written by Eli Herr Long and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dental Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Prescription Writing Certain general terms require definition or comment at the outset. M ateria medica, in a restricted sense, means the materials or substances used in medicine. In a broad sense, the term means the science that treats of drugs in their varied relations. Pharmacy is the science of preparing medicines for use. It includes not only the making of drug preparations, but also the art of compound ing and dispensing medicines. Pharmacology has had much the same meaning as materia medica in its broad sense, but it has more recently come to be applied to a distinct part of the science of drugs, that which treats of the action of drugs upon the tissues, organs and functions of the body. Therapeutics is the science and art of employing remedies in the treat ment of disease. While therapeutics should have a scientific basis in the knowledge of the action and effects of remedies, practical treatment of disease will always remain an art, because of the many modifying factors that render scientific precision impossible. Toxicology is that part of medical science which treats of poisons. It includes the action and effects of poisons, their detection, and the treatment of the conditions resulting from poisoning. As a standard for the purity and uniformity of drugs and prepara tions, we have the volume known as the United States Pharmacopoeia, which is the recognized authority for this country. Other countries have similar standards. The book does not treat of the action or uses of medicines, but, as its main object, it furnishes a list of recognized drugs, with descriptions, tests of purity, etc., and of preparations, with their formulas. The drugs and preparations thus recognized are called official. The book not only is the authority upon drugs and their preparations, but it forms the basis of our text-books on materia medica, pharmacy and therapeutics. The revision of 1900 for the first time contains also doses of official drugs and preparations. The abbreviation (u. S. P.) always indicates this work. Book Pharmacology and Therapeutics

Download or read book Pharmacology and Therapeutics written by Horatio C. Wood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pharmacology and Therapeutics: For Students and Practitioners of Medicine The continued immanence of the U.S. Pharmacop ia has delayed the publication of a new edition of this work, as the author felt that the appearance of a revision which should not include the changes in the legal standard would work an injustice to many of those who should purchase the book. While the general plan of the previous edition has been adhered to, extensive alterations have been required, not only to meet the changes in the Pharmacop ia but also to keep apace with the rapid advances in the sciences of pharmacology. The articles on veronal, digitalis, pituitary, atoxyl and salvarsan have been almost completely rewritten and important alterations made in those on potassium, caffeine, dionine, ergot, ipecacuanha, magnesium, calcium, and hexamethylenamine. Some twenty substances not considered in the previous edition have received more or less extensive notice in the present one; among these may be mentioned especially, agaricin, bromural, apiol, cotarnine, chrysarobin, picrotoxin, homatropine, aspidosperma, and thiosinamin. Besides these there have been a number of minor interpolations scattered throughout the work. While the author does not feel that he should surrender his judgment as to the importance of various remedies to that of the Committee on Revision, he does believe that official substances should always be favored by the physician when not to the detriment of the patient. Moreover, for obvious reasons, it is important that a text-book for students should recognize the legal authority of the country on the subject of drugs. Therefore, while it has been deemed advisable to consider a number of unofficial drugs, because of their practical importance, it has also been necessary to include some substances of little remedial value because of their recognition by the Pharmacop ia. One innovation in the U.S. Pharmacop ia which has been followed in this work is especially worthy of note. That is the adoption of the British term "mil" for the thousandth part of a liter. This is a much more convenient as well as a more accurate term than the cumbersome "C.c." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
