Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Nervous Diseases, Vol. 1: For Physicians and Students This translation of the fifth edition of Oppenheim's "d104-book of Nervous Diseases" has been undertaken with the sanction and by agreement with its distinguished author, in consequence of suggestions made from various quarters that a work which holds such a high position in the estimation of those who can read it in its original form should be made more easily accessible to English and American readers. Every endeavour has been made to keep the translation as close as possible to the German text, and to reproduce the meaning of the text exactly and clearly. In conformity with the desire of the author, the work has not been in any way edited. The translator feels sure that the bibliographical references given in this edition have greatly enhanced the value of the work, and that their addition has more than justified the labour that they must have entailed. The translator has to express his appreciation of the most valuable assistance and collaboration in the work of translation and in the reading of proofs given by Mrs H. M. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Nervous Diseases: For Students and Practicing Physicians; In Thirty Lectures When it was suggested by my publishers that I should write a text-book of nervous diseases adapted to the needs of students and practical physicians; in size between the summary compendiums and outlines and the large refer ence works and handbooks of neurology, I found upon inquiry among my colleagues so general an agreement that such a book was desirable, that I no longer hesitated to undertake its preparation. When I decided to present my material in the form of lectures, it was because of the recollection that in my student days, the reading of text-books in lecture form was to my fellow stu dents and myself like an oasis in the midst of the tiresome work of preparing for examinations. On the other hand, I did not conceal from myself that the systematic arrangement of the material, as compared to its presentation in lectures, had in general the advantage of greater clearness and better adapta tion for quick reference. On this account I have endeavored to combine the advantages of both methods of arrangement, by the introduction of titles, sum maries in tabular form, and recapitulatory headings.
