Download or read book Text Book of Mechanics Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by Louis A. Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Mechanics, Vol. 5 Mechanics may conveniently be divided into three parts: mechanics of solids, Of liquids, and of gases. Mechan ics of solids, when ideal, rigid solids only are considered, forms the simplest part of the subject, and this is the part first studied under the title of theoretical mechanics. When rigidity is no longer assumed the study of the mechanics of solids involves the elastic properties of materials. The rational, rigorously developed theory of elasticity is so complicated and leads to results SO unsatisfactory from the practical standpoint that engineering students are (and all students should be) first taught a simplified theory of elasticity known as mechanics of materials where, whenever the rigorous theory leads too far afield, recourse is had to approximations and reasonable assumptions based upon observation and experiment. The study of the mechanics of liquids is divided into hydrostatics and hydrokinetics. In the first division are studied the effects of liquids at rest; in the second liquids in motion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics: A d104-Book for Engineers This book is intended to give a working knowledge of the principles of Mechanics and to supply a foundation upon which intelligent study of Strength of Materials, Stresses in Structures, Machine Design, and other courses of more technical nature may rest. In the development of this subject, emphasis is put upon the physical character of the ideas involved, while mathematics is. employed as a convenient tool for the determination and expression of quantitative relations. Analytical and graphical methods are given together and each is interpreted in terms of the other. While the principal stress is placed upon Mechanics as a science, considerable attention is given to Mechanics as an art. In the text, in some of the problems, and in many of the illustrative examples, methods of calculation are suggested by means of which accurate results may be most readily obtained. The definitions of work and potential energy, together with the solution of problems of statics by the method of virtual work are given early. In the treatment of dynamics, the definitions of kinetic energy and its application to the conditions of variable motion are introduced as soon as possible. In equations involving acceleration or energy, the common commercial units are employed - the pound mass as the unit of mass and the weight of the pound mass as the unit of force. In order to clear up the confusion which results from the fact that physicists use one set of units while some engineering writers use another. Chapter XVIII is devoted to a discussion of the various systems. The author acknowledges his obligations to many of his colleagues who have assisted in the preparation of this book. P. W. Ott of the Department of Mechanics checked the problems of several chapters. S. A. Harbarger of the Department of English read all the manuscript and assisted in the final revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Mechanics: For Colleges and Technical Schools The science of mechanics, as all other departments of physical science, has made great advances in recent years, in this book I have endeavored to unfold the principles of modern mechanics systematically, and also to call the attention of the student to the more useful applications of the subject. It has long seemed to me that the more practical parts might with advantage be presented to the beginner at least as fully as the more abstract, and that, too, without any sacrifice of scientific precision. The book is so arranged that the student, whether intending to make a specialty of engineering, physics, or astronomy, can branch out in his special direction without difficulty. It has been the aim to make the examples as practical as possible. Thus while writing the Strong locomotive (No. 444) was brought out by the L. V. R. R. Co., and the Westinghouse air-brake tests (1887) were being made. Many problems founded on these and other mechanisms have been introduced. It has been the aim also to make the examples typical. Instead of making them mere numerical illustrations of formulas, the idea has been to encourage independent thought. In many cases different methods of solution have been indicated to encourage the student to trust rather to an independent investigation than to an answer so called. Considerable attention has been paid to the graphical method of solution, guarding, however, against making it a "complicated weapon with which one can attack all sorts of problems which are more easily solved in other ways." Download or read book Mechanics of Materials Classic Reprint written by Mansfield Merriman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics of Materials Since 188 5, when the first edition of this work was published, many advances have been made in the subject of Mechanics of Materials. Some of these have been noted in the additions to subsequent editions, but to record and correlate them properly it has now become necessary to rewrite and reset the book. In doing so the author has endeavored to keep the facts of experi ment and practice constantly in View, for the theory Of the subject is merely the formal expression and generalization of observed phenomena. The subject, indeed, no longer consists of a series, of academic exercises in algebra and rational mechanics, but it is indispensably necessary that the phenomena of stress should be clearly understood by the student. While laboratory work is a valuable aid to this end, it is important, in the Opinion of the author, that no recitation or lecture should be held without having test specimens at hand with which to illustrate the phys ical phenomena. The same general plan of treatment has been followed as before, but the subdivisions are somewhat different, and the fifteen chapters of the last edition have been increased to nineteen. The statement of average values of the principal materials. Of engineering has proved so advantageous to students that it is here also followed. Numerous numerical examples are given in the text to exemplify the formulas and methods, these generally relating to cases that arise in practice. To encourage students to think for themselves, one or more problems are given at the end of each article; 1 for the experience of the author has indicated that the solution of many numerical exercises is required in order that students may become well grounded in theory. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Applied Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering, Vol. 4 of 5 It has been found necessary to still further subdivide this wide and all-important subject of Advanced Applied Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering. In order to do so with the least departure and derangement of the previous volumes and editions, it has been advisable and convenient to follow the recent subdivision of this subject as stated in the "Rules and Syllabus of Examinations applying to the Election of Associate Members of The Institution of Civil Engineers." Moreover, this particular method of subdivision is practised by several Universities and Technical Colleges. It is also being advocated by Teachers in connection with the Boards of Education, and, to a certain extent, by those connected with the City and Guilds of London Examinations in Mechanical Engineering. Consequently, Volume I. will deal with "Applied Mechanics" proper, Volume II. will discuss and give practical illustrations of "Strength and Elasticity of Materials," Volume III. will be confined to The Theory of Structures, Volume IV. to "Hydraulics, Hydraulic and Refrigerating Machinery," whilst Volume V. will be greatly enlarged, and treat upon The Theory of Machines."
