Book A Text Book of Inorganic Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Inorganic Chemistry Classic Reprint written by George Senter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Inorganic Chemistry It follows from the above statement that the theoretical part of the subject is distributed throughout the book. The different topics are dealt with as Opportunity offers, but the treatment of any particular subject is postponed till facts illustrating it have been mentioned. The subject in question is then considered as fully as space permits - a mode of procedure which appears preferable to dealing with it in a fragmentary manner in different parts of the book. The latter method may usefully be employed for lectures, but the former method greatly increases the value of the book for purposes of reference and revision. As regards the order, I have also been guided to some extent by the historical development of the science. Subject to the above considerations, the more important branches of chemical theory, including the Principles of Chemical Equilibrium, the determination of Molecular Weights in Solu tion, Electrolysis and Electrolytic Dissociation, are introduced at a fairly early stage of the work, and their applications are repeatedly illustrated in the latter part of the book. The Periodic System is described after the non-metals, and serves as the basis for the discussion of the metals and their com pounds. One of the main tasks of a teacher is so to familiarize the student with a general principle that he learns to apply it with confidence. The mere statement of a principle, in the expectation that the student will straightway apply it in his later work, is useless. It will be found that the subjects usually included in an Elementary Course, such as Stage I. Of the Board of Education, are all dealt with in the early part of the book, and the more advanced work in the later chapters. Further division of the subject into stages leads inevitably to the result that information regarding any important element has to be sought for in different parts of the book, thus rendering it much less useful for purposes of reference and revision. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Inorganic Chemistry for Colleges But advance was slow as long as observation and chance alone led the way. Directed experimentation was necessary; and for this a motive had to be present. It was with the rise of alchemy that such a motive appeared. The alchemists sought the things which were supposed to lead to happiness - health and riches. They endeavored to change the common metals into gold, hoping to do this with the help of a mysterious substance, called the philosopher's stone. But gold without health is of little value, so a search was made for the elixir of life, which could bring back glorious youth to the aged. Men worked at these problems all over Europe. They studied everything available, mixed things together, and heated and distilled them when possible. As sub stances appeared to affect one another more readily when they were dissolved in some liquid, a third substance, a universal solvent, was sought as an aid toward accomplishing the end in View. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inorganic Chemistry: For Use in Science Classes and Higher and Middle Schools My aim throughout has been to express, in as clear and simple language as possible, the earlier principles of the science, so as to fit the book for the use of mere beginners, but at the same time to be sufficiently full and accurate that it might be useful as a text-book in the hands of more advanced students. The limits to which this series is confined have prevented me from giving all the experimental illustrations I could have wished; but I have, I trust, given amply sufficient to illustrate every assertion in the text, and have sought to make choice of those which, while they are striking and conclusive, combine also the property of being easily performed, and are therefore most suitable to students whose command of apparatus may be limited. Book Elements of Inorganic Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Inorganic Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Harry C. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Inorganic Chemistry The physical properties Of substances are treated rather more fully than in the earlier text-books, since the tendency today, introduced by physical chemistry, is to bring chemistry and physics more closely together, rather than to separate them as two distinct sciences. The physical properties Of a substance are taken up after its chemical properties, in order that the teacher may conveniently omit more or less Of this part of the text if the pupil is not sufficiently advanced to properly appreciate its meaning. The experiments are placed at the ends of chapters rather than in the body of the text or at the end of the book. By this means the text is made continuous and more readable.
