Book A Text Book of General Astronomy

Download or read book A Text Book of General Astronomy written by Charles A. Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of General Astronomy: For Colleges and Scientific Schools The present work is designed as a text-book of Astronomy suited to the general course in our colleges and Schools of science, and is meant to supply that amount of information upon the subject which may fairly be expected of every liberally educated person. W'hile it assumes the previous discipline and mental maturity usually corresponding to the latter years Of'lthe college course, it does not demand the peculiar mathematical training and aptitude necessary as the basis of a special course in the science - only the most ele mentary knowledge of Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry is required for its reading. Its aim is to give a clear, accu rate, and justly proportioned presentation of astronomical facts, principles, and methods in such a form that they can be easily apprehended by the average college student with a reasonable amount of effort. The limitations Of time are such in our college course that probably it will not be possible in most cases for a class to take thoroughly everything in the book. The fine print is to be regarded rather as collateral reading, important to any thing like a complete view of the subject, but not essential to the course. Some of the chapters can even be omitted in cases where it is found necessary to abridge the course as much as possible; e.g., the chapters on Instruments and on Perturbations. The student should, however, learn the distance, diameter, time of revolution, and time of rotation of each planet. More extended data for purposes Of reference are to be found in the Appendices. In this edition the results of the latest important investigations and discoveries have been stated. The work Of the Lick Observa tory, as set forth in the publications of the Astronomical Society Of the Pacific, merits and has received much attention. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Field Astronomy for Engineers The present work is not designed for professional students of astronomy, but for another and larger class found in technical colleges. For many years it has been the author' s duty to teach to students of engineering the elements of practical astronomy, and the experience thus acquired has gradually produced the unconventional views that find expression in the present text and which, to the author's mind, are justified by the following considerations. Book An Introduction to Astronomy

Download or read book An Introduction to Astronomy written by John Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy: Designed as a Reader and Text-Book for Schools and Families This work is designed to fill a vacuum in schools and families. With the advancement of science there should be a corresponding advancement in the facilities for acquiring a knowledge of it. To economize time and expense in this department is of as much import ance to the student as frugality and industry are to the success of the manufacturer or the merchant. Im pressed with the importance of these facts, and having a desire to aid in the general diffusion of useful know ledge by giving them some practical form, this work has been prepared. It has a double purpose. As a reader, it contains a great variety of topics; and, being almost entirely divested of scientific terms and phrases, its language is level to the comprehension of the youthful mind. As a text-book, it treats first of the sun and those heavenly bodies with which we are all, by obser vation, most familiar, and advances, consecutively, in the investigation of other worlds and systems which the telescope has revealed to our view. Thus to enhance the interest and value of this work to the student and casual reader, nearly all of the topics that it contains are fully illustrated by engravings, prepared expressly for that purpose. And to promote this object still further, and impart knowledge in the most impressive manner by a sensible demonstration of the arrangement. Book General Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book General Astronomy Classic Reprint written by H. Spencer Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Astronomy In this work the Author has endeavoured to cover as wide a field as possible and it has necessarily been somewhat difficult to decide upon what to include and What to omit, especially when dealing with the most recent developments. It is hoped, however, that the book will serve to give the reader a sufficiently complete view of the present state of Astronomy. Mathematics has been almost entirely excluded in order that the volume may appeal to the amateur, no less than the student. Where possible mathematical methods of reasoning have been followed, which it is hoped will prove of value to students of elementary mathematical astronomy in clothing the symbols with more descriptive matter than is given in the text-books on Mathematical Astronomy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy: Designed as a Text Book for the Students of Yale College Tm: great progress of astronomical discovery, during the ast few years, has induced the author of this work to prepare, with much labor and expense, a new edition, which should fully exhibit the features of the science in their latest physiognomy. Since the stereotype edition was first published, in 1844, numerous and important discoveries have been made, both in the solar system and among the fixed stars. The dimensions of the planetary system have been nearly doubled by the addition of the planet Neptune; the number of the Asteroids has been increased from four to twenty-seven; interesting discoveries have been made in the Rings of Saturn, and an eighth member has been added to his retinue of satellites; and the subject of Comets has received a new impulse by the appearance of the remarkable comet of 1843.
