Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy and Physiology: A Text-Book for Nurses The human body from birth to Old age exhibits in the living condition a series of phenomena by which it grows, performs the various and complex movements of which man is capable in the processes of daily life; thinks, and is conscious of the sensations which bring him into relation with his surroundings, and repro duces, permitting a continuation of the species. A study of the functions of the numerous organs and structures of the body in a state of health, and their associated phenomena of growth, movement, mentality, and reproduction, is termed human physiology. To understand the functions of organs, etc., it is necessary to first understand the construction of the human body of which they are a part. To this branch Of science the term human anatomy is applied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Text Book of Physiology Classic Reprint written by M. Foster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physiology Tma high reputation acquired, on both sides of the Atlantic, by Dr. Foster's text-book of Physiology as a lucid exposition of the science in its most modern aspect, has seemed to call for an edition more thor oughly adapted to the wants of the American student. The plan of the author has presupposed an acquaint ance with the details of physiological anatomy, such as the student is accustomed to look for in his trea tises on physiology. The absence of these details has rendered many parts of the work vague, if not altogether incomprehensible, and has therefore proved a serious drawback to the usefulness of the book as an accompaniment to lectures on physiology as it is usu all y taught in our schools, and this deficiency the editor has endeavored to supply by brief notes and the intro duction of a large number of illustrations. Download or read book Text Book of Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses Classic Reprint written by Diana Clifford Kimber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses That this revision has been accomplished with, I trust, success, is almost entirely owing to the kind assistance given me by Mr. T. Pickering Pick, and by Percy M. Dawson, M.D., Assistant Professor Of Physiology in the Johns Hopkins Uni versity, Baltimore. To the latter I am indebted for the whole recasting, and in large measure rewriting, of the chapter on the Nervous System, and also, to a slighter extent, Of Chapters I. And XIX. Indeed, so greatly is this revision the work Of Dr. Dawson that I should have been glad, had I been allowed, to place his name with mine on the title-page. The chapter on the Nervous System has been transferred to its usual position in such text-books, namely, following the chapter on Muscles, but it is, of course, possible for those who prefer the Old arrangement to take this chapter later in the course Of study. A number Of new drawings have been made specially for this edition, including ten original ones by Dr. Dawson; also, to all the weights and measures, according to the English System, have been added their equivalents in the Metric System. It should be noted that the calculations are based upon the standard Of weights and measures adopted by the United States, and not upon those Of the British Pharmacopeia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Human Physiology, Including Histology and Microscopical Anatomy: With Especial Reference to the Practice of Medicine The fourth English edition of Professor Stirling's translation of Landois' Physiology, published in 1891, has been out of print for some years. Since the date of publication of this English edition, the work has passed through three more large editions in Germany. On each occasion Professor Landois still further enhanced its merits by incorporating all those results of physiological investigation which in his judgment would have a permanent value not only for advanced students but for practitioners of medicine as well; and hence there is probably no work which so thoroughly and satisfactorily represents the existing state of physiological science and its relations to pathology and clinical medicine, as that of Professor Land'ois. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book of Physiology, Vol. 1 of 2: General Physiology Before taking up the physiology of the tissues, I have discussed their origin in the light of recent investigations regarding the phenomena of fecundation and the minute structure of cells and of nuclei. This is a novel arrangement, so far as recent systematic works are concerned, but it has commended itself to me as one leading to a philosophical View of the whole subject. The questions as to the origin of the tissues and the mysterious way by which they are impressed with hereditary characters are of profound importance and have a bearing not only on physiological but on pathological theories. The portion dealing with the theories of heredity has been read by Professor E. Bay Lankester, Who, while not agreeing with me in my general conclusion, has given me valuable suggestions and criticisms. The whole of this section has also been read by Mr. J. H. E.sc. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Health The new facts that have been established in connection with foods have changed many features of that important subject. Even the relation of bones and muscles presents a new emphasis to be placed upon certain topics, especially such as relate to properly shaped feet and the results of muscle degeneration. The recognition of neurons as the units of the nervous system and nervous action, and the con ception of the brain and spinal cord as a complex of inter related neurons, have vastly illuminated the study of the nervous system even for younger children.
