Book excerpt: Best of Show Award, Society for Technical Communication International From the East Texas swamps and forests to the Edwards Plateau canyons and the Trans-Pecos mountains, Texas hosts a surprising number of native orchids. Their exquisite beauty endears them to everyone from wildflower lovers to professional botanists and conservationists. This beautifully illustrated book presents all 54 wild orchids of Texas. The species descriptions that accompany Joe Liggio's lovely color photos discuss the plant's flowers, blooming season, pollinators, typical habitats, and range (also shown by map), including its distribution within and beyond Texas. The species are grouped by genus and also listed by color, county, and habitat for easy reference. In addition to the species accounts, the authors offer a general natural history of Texas orchids that discusses such topics as pollination and reproduction, special growing requirements, and threats to orchids from loss of habitats and careless collecting. They also describe the many orchid habitats in Texas and the species that grow in each. This wide variety of information, which has never before been collected in one volume for a general readership, makes this book the essential guide to Texas' wild orchids.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK A modern classic of personal journalism, The Orchid Thief is Susan Orlean’s wickedly funny, elegant, and captivating tale of an amazing obsession. Determined to clone an endangered flower—the rare ghost orchid Polyrrhiza lindenii—a deeply eccentric and oddly attractive man named John Laroche leads Orlean on an unforgettable tour of America’s strange flower-selling subculture, through Florida’s swamps and beyond, along with the Seminoles who help him and the forces of justice who fight him. In the end, Orlean—and the reader—will have more respect for underdog determination and a powerful new definition of passion. In this new edition, coming fifteen years after its initial publication and twenty years after she first met the “orchid thief,” Orlean revisits this unforgettable world, and the route by which it was brought to the screen in the film Adaptation, in a new retrospective essay. Book Coevolution of Animals and Plants

Download or read book Coevolution of Animals and Plants written by Lawrence E. Gilbert and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1980-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been recognized that plants and animals profoundly affect one another’s characteristics during the course of evolution. However, the importance of coevolution as a dynamic process involving such diverse factors as chemical communication, population structure and dynamics, energetics, and the evolution, structure, and functioning of ecosystems has been widely recognized for a comparatively short time. Coevolution represents a point of view about the structure of nature that only began to be fully explored in the late twentieth century. The papers presented here herald its emergence as an important and promising field of biological research. Coevolution of Animals and Plants is the first book to focus on the dynamic aspects of animal-plant coevolution. It covers, as broadly as possible, all the ways in which plants interact with animals. Thus, it includes discussions of leaf-feeding animals and their impact on plant evolution as well as of predator-prey relationships involving the seeds of angiosperms. Several papers deal with the most familiar aspect of mutualistic plant-animal interactions—pollination relationships. The interactions of orchids and bees, ants and plants, and butterflies and plants are discussed. One article provides a fascinating example of more indirect relationships centered around the role of carotenoids, which are produced by plants but play a fundamental part in the visual systems of both plants and animals. Coevolution of Animals and Plants provides a general conceptual framework for studies on animal-plant interaction. The papers are written from a theoretical, rather than a speculative, standpoint, stressing patterns that can be applied in a broader sense to relationships within ecosystems. Contributors to the volume include Paul Feeny, Miriam Rothschild, Christopher Smith, Brian Hocking, Lawrence Gilbert, Calaway Dodson, Herbert Baker, Bernd Heinrich, Doyle McKey, and Gordon Frankie.

Book Orchids of Minnesota

  • Author : Welby Richmond Smith
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 1452902550
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Orchids of Minnesota written by Welby Richmond Smith and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orchids are often thought of as rare, fragile "objets d'art," existing only in steamy tropical forests or in the greenhouses of the well-to-do. In fact, orchids occur worldwide from the arctic tundra to Tierra del Fuego. Minnesota is the home of 43 native species of orchids, and Orchids of Minnesota is the only book devoted specifically to their life history and study. Orchids occur in every county in Minnesota and in essentially every terrestrial habitat type. Both a field guide and an illustrated flora of scholarly quality, Orchids of Minnesota includes a section on the biology of orchids (morphology, ecology, and geographical distribution), a key to the orchid genera and species, and a description of each of the state's 43 species. Welby R. Smith offers comprehensive descriptions and information on the specific habitat of each species and interesting facts of its natural history. In addition, the book provides a detailed line drawing and photograph, a North American range map, and a Minnesota county distribution map for each species. Although regional in its focus, Orchids of Minnesota will be of interest to both national and international audiences. The detailed pen-and-ink drawings by Vera Ming Wong are beautifully executed and botanically accurate, revealing that even the most common orchid species are uncommon when compared to other plants.

Book Adventures in Texas Gardening

Download or read book Adventures in Texas Gardening written by Bill Scheick and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gardening in Texas is not for the faint of heart or weak-willed. Given the remarkable variety of soils, climate ranges, and the obstacles of stifling heat, humidity, and drought, the dedication of so many gardening enthusiasts speaks to the powerful hold plants have over people. Living and gardening in Central Texas since 1969, Bill Scheick has celebrated successes and analyzed failures. Techniques and plants that worked in one yard did not necessarily work in another just a few miles away. In Adventures in Texas Gardening, Scheick shares, through personal accounts as well as stories from fellow gardeners, big gardening efforts—transforming an entire backyard, dealing with unruly pets and marauding wildlife, and fostering vanishing bees. Attention is also given to other challenges, such as soil erosion and yard contamination. With a firm understanding of horticulture and a good dose of humor, Scheick offers beginning and experienced gardeners a resource for inspiration, information, and commiseration as they pursue their own gardening adventures in Texas.
