Book Texas Extension Agents Perceptions of Organic Agriculture and Its Implications for Training

Download or read book Texas Extension Agents Perceptions of Organic Agriculture and Its Implications for Training written by Patrick Terrell Lillard and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine Texas AgriLife Extension agents' perceptions of organic agriculture (OA) and implications for training. Primary variables of interest included level of interest in OA in their respective counties, previous training received, interest in future training, perception of OA and Texas AgriLife Extension's involvement in OA. A random sample of agents was selected (n = 151) and a response rate of 81.5% was achieved. A majority of agents indicated interest in OA in their respective counties had increased over the past five years (n = 60), but noted demand was still low (n = 39) to moderate (n = 42). Agents from urban or suburban counties reported higher levels of interests in OA than did agents from rural counties. Agents were most interested in training on organic soil fertility, insect, weed, and disease management and least interested in training on organic certification and transitioning to OA. Agents indicated traditional information resources would be the most useful delivery methods for communicating information about organic farming, which included print publications, a website with organic information and extension workshops. Agents' perceptions of OA and their perceptions of Texas AgriLife Extension's involvement in OA were measured using attitudinal statements using a five point summated scale with reliability estimates r = 0.76 and 0.76 respectively. It was found that agents neither agreed nor disagreed with statements affirming the viability of OA (M = 2.80) and statements advocating Texas AgriLife Extension's involvement in OA (M = 3.38). A stepwise multiple regression was run on the primary variables of interest to determine which variables predicted agents' interest in training. Perceptions of Texas AgriLife Extension's involvement, perceptions of OA, and current level of interest in their county accounted for over 50 percent of the variability. This research concluded that due to agents' general ambivalent attitude toward OA, Texas AgriLife Extension administration will need to advocate more training and programming in OA if they wish to increase their role in OA. For there to be any significant change in the advancement of OA, though, it will require a paradigm shift in the land grant university system (LGUS).

Book Riyadh Extension Agents Perceptions Regarding Organic Agriculture and Implication for Training

Download or read book Riyadh Extension Agents Perceptions Regarding Organic Agriculture and Implication for Training written by Bader Alotaibi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine Riyadh Region extension agents perceptions regarding organic agriculture and implications for training. Variables studied were level of interest in training in organic agriculture, role of extension in organic agriculture, sources of information related to organic agriculture, and agents perceptions of organic agriculture. A census was conducted to collect data from the extension agent target population.Almost 95% of agents indicated their interest in receiving future organic agriculture training. Agents expressed the most interest in training topic areas related to organic agriculture in general, marketing of organic produces, weed management, and transitioning to organic agriculture. Almost 50% of extension agents reported they were not currently confident in providing organic agriculture information to clients. Agents indicated that field days at organic farms, training at colleges on organic agriculture topics, and workshops about organic agriculture would be the most useful information sources. Extension agents overall had a slightly positive perception of organic agriculture in general, and it was found that agents in Riyadh had an ambivalent perception about the role of extension agents in organic agriculture. There were no significant differences in the summated scores for agent perceptions regarding organic agriculture practices, the role of extension in organic agriculture and training interest in organic agriculture when examined by age, educational level, responsibility for providing organic agriculture information, previous experience with organic agriculture, and agent specialization areas. The researcher concluded that since approximately one-half of the extension agents were not confident in providing information regarding organic agriculture and around 40% of agents had no training related to organic agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture of Saudi Arabia and universities will need to provide more training and programming in organic agriculture via formal and/or non-formal education, if they wish to increase and enhance the role of extension in organic agriculture.

Book A Descriptive Study of the Two Texas Extension Programs

Download or read book A Descriptive Study of the Two Texas Extension Programs written by Sonja Latrice Stueart-Davis and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas is one of 17 states with both 1862 and 1890 Extension programs. The purpose of this study was to examine the partnership amongst agents of Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Cooperative Extension Program, in counties that have both Extension programs. Seventy-eight agents participated in the study, of which, 73% (N=57) were employed by Texas AgriLife Extension Service and 24% (N=19) were employed by the Cooperative Extension Program. Cohen's D Effect Size was used to determine the practical significance of differences among agents' perception of the relevance of Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View A & M University, along with the agents' understanding of the partnership, willingness to partner and knowledge of the Operational Guidelines. As part of the study, agents also identified strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities of having two programs in the State and provided recommendations for strengthening the partnership. Among agents, there was a high degree of relevance for Texas AgriLife Extension Service, while there was a moderate degree of relevance for the Cooperative Extension Program-Prairie View A & M. Cohen's D Effect size suggested a large practical difference amongst agents in their perception of both Extension programs. Findings indicated a moderate degree of knowledge of the Operational Guidelines and understanding of the partnership amongst agents. Cohen's D Effect size value (d =.1.29) and (d =1.30) suggested a large practical differences amongst agents, from the two programs, in relation to their willingness to partner and understanding of the partnership respectively. Strengths of having two Extension programs identified by agents were the Extension programs ability to reach new and diverse audiences and address community and state needs. Weaknesses identified were agents competing against one another for audiences, two programs causing confusion to clientele, and a lack of understanding on how to collaborate. Opportunities of having two Extension programs identified were collaborating on programs, reaching diverse audiences, and the ability to provide more services. Agents provided recommendations of better communication to understanding the partnership and how to partner, clearer job descriptions to prevent duplication and competition, and making the citizens the priority instead of the Extension programs.

Book Perception and Training Needs of Mississippi State University Extension Agents and the Level of Demand They Receive for Information in Organic Agriculture

Download or read book Perception and Training Needs of Mississippi State University Extension Agents and the Level of Demand They Receive for Information in Organic Agriculture written by Thamir Niamah Al-Janabi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: h Needs Assessment Model. Data were collected via Qualtrics. The population of the study was 154 Mississippi State University Extension agents with 77 Extension agents responding to the questionnaire. Most agents were 40 to 49 years old with an almost equal percentage being male and female. The majority of agents (75.3%) had master’s degree. More than one third of the agents indicated the level of demand towards raising livestock organically had stayed the same. Also, approximately 40% of agents indicated the level of demand towards growing row crops had stayed the same. However, more than one half of agents indicated the level of demand towards growing produce organically had increased The level of confidence of Mississippi State University Extension agents in conducting activities in organic agriculture was ranged from M = 2.50 to M = 3.56 on five-point scale. The mean of the Extension agents’ perception towards organic agriculture ranged from M = 2.52 to M = 3.98 on five-point scale. The five organic agriculture topics that had the highest mean weighted discrepancy score (MWD) were “Appropriate amounts of bio-fertilizers to use in organic agriculture”, “Appropriate amounts of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in organic agriculture”, “Organic certification”, “Organic agriculture standards”, and “Types of bio-fertilizers used in organic agriculture”. Regarding the relationship between selected demographic characteristics and training needs, significant differences existed among age groups in only three topics with significant differences among gender found in 10 topics. Furthermore, significant differences were found between agents’ experiences groups in one topic. Moreover, significant differences among the highest level of education groups were found in 4 topics. Significant differences among the number of trainings groups were found in only one topic. Since more than one-half of Extension agents had no trainings regarding organic agriculture and Extension agents need high training in approximately one-half of the 29 organic agriculture topics, Mississippi State University Extension needs to provide more training and programming in organic agriculture via formal and/or non-formal education.

Book Teacher Perceptions of Agriculture in the Classroom as Provided by Texas A M Agrilife Extension Programs

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of Agriculture in the Classroom as Provided by Texas A M Agrilife Extension Programs written by Andrew S. Hatcher and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is to provide useful and educational material for the people in the 254 counties of Texas. One way the Extension Service serves each county is by providing educational programs within the public-school systems kindergarten through 12th grade. Various programs are offered including animal science, nutrition, water conservation, etc. The purpose of this study was to assess teachers’ perceptions of the agricultural programs the Extension Service provided to their classrooms. To assess perceptions, an anonymous survey was used to gather data. Descriptive statistics including frequencies and percentages, t-tests, and a multiple regression processed by the SPSS program was used to analyze the data. Results indicated teachers did notice improvements in test and assignment scores in both classroom-specific curriculum as well as state-mandated test scores if applicable to the grade level being taught. Further, a multiple regression indicated no statistically significant relationship between the agricultural background of the participants and any of the variables measuring teachers’ perceptions of the agricultural programs in the classroom, F(4, 28) = 1.796, p = .158. Finally, participants provided feedback that included more convenient methods of program delivery, finding more affordable programs, positive and negative comments, and defined more program areas that the Extension Service could offer to schools.
