Book Old West Lawmen

Download or read book Old West Lawmen written by Legends of America and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old West was often a lawless place, where outlaws frequently reigned supreme. Many of the wild and rowdy places were initially populated by men and often attracted seedier elements of society to their many saloons, dance halls, gambling parlors and brothels. However, as thousands of pioneers pushed their way westward in search of land and better lives, they demanded law and order. Marshals and sheriffs were in high demand in some of the most lawless settlements, as well as the numerous mining camps that dotted the west. Though the vast majority of these Old West lawmen were honorable and heroic figures, ironically, many of them rode both sides of the fence and were known as outlaws as well. Old West Lawmen includes a collection of stories about 57 lawmen with over 70 vintage photographs plus articles on organizations like the Texas Rangers, U.S. Marshals, and Pinkerton Detective Agency.

The authors explore a shoot-out that was more explosive than the gunfight at the O.K. Corral in a town that no longer exists. The Coy family was involved with the law, and especially Juan Coy, by his own accounts gunned down at least thirty-three opponents. Coy earned his hard reputation after the Civil War during the turbulent Reconstruction period. Hardened lawman Frankie Sullivan spent the last six years running from his destiny and the broken heart she'd left behind. He thought he'd never see her again, but when Maddie Cahill lands on his doorstep one rainy night, he tells himself he could have turned her away if not for the frightened small boy by her side who happens to look a lot like him. Was he just wishing he had another chance at the past or did Maddie have a secret he should know? Either way, the dark-eyed beauty was still wreaking havoc in his carefully constructed world...and the feelings he had for her he thought long dead. Madeline Rose Cahill Carter was running for her life and the life of her young son, Jonah. As the only living heirs to Maddie's family fortune, both she and her son are now targets of her late husband's greedy family who want nothing more than to steal her birthright by taking control of the ranch that has been in her family for four generations. She can't let that happen. She has to protect the Cahill legacy for her son and future generations but to do that, she's gonna need help. There's only one man she trusts who can protect her and her young son against the Carters, but will he be willing after all this time? After the way she'd left? After the way she broke his heart? When the sins of the past return to the present, can unrequited love rebuild burned bridges or will broken hearts be lost among the ashes?

Book A Texas Cow Boy A Western Classic

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Texas Cowboy" subtitled as "Fifteen Years on the Hurricane Deck of a Spanish Pony" is one of the few books which offers a true look into the life of a real cowboy and that too written by someone who had actually lived the life. Excerpt: "While ranching on the Indian Territory line, close to Caldwell, Kansas, in the winter of '82 and '83, we boys—there being nine of us—made an iron-clad rule that whoever was heard swearing or caught picking grey backs off and throwing them on the floor without first killing them, should pay a fine of ten cents for each and every offense. The proceeds to be used for buying choice literature—something that would have a tendency to raise us above the average cow-puncher..." Charlie Siringo was an American lawman, detective and agent for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Angelo Siringo (February 7, 1855-October 18, 1928), was an American lawman, detective, and agent for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in Matagorda County, Texas to an Irish immigrant mother and an Italian immigrant father. Siringo attended public school until reaching the age of 15, when he started working on local ranches as a cowboy. After taking part in several cattle drives, Siringo stopped herding to settle down, got married (1884), had a child, and open a merchant business in Caldwell, Kansas. He began writing a book, entitled "A Texas Cowboy: or Fifteen Years on the Hurricane Deck of a Spanish Pony." A year later, it was published, to wide acclaim, and became one of the first true looks into life as a cowboy written by someone who had actually lived the life. Siringo explains that the copyright expired on "A Texas Cowboy," and "A Lone Star Cowboy" was intended to replace it. He added much information on cattle that was not in the first book. Siringo relates many harrowing experiences, such as buffalo hunting, and herding cattle up the Chisholm Trail. He met Billy The Kid and Pat Garrett, and tells the "true" story of Billy's death. This edition of the book contains all 14 of the original illustrations, rejuvenated.
