Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A lively history” of how TV advertising became a defining force in American culture between 1946 and 1964(Technology and Culture). The two decades following World War II brought television into homes and, of course, television commercials. Those commercials, in turn, created an image of the postwar American Dream that lingers to this day. This book recounts how advertising became a part of everyday lives and national culture during this midcentury period, not only reflecting consumers’ desires but shaping them, and broadcasting a vivid portrait of comfort, abundance, ease, and happy family life and, of course, keeping up with the Joneses. As the author asserts, it’s nearly impossible to understand our culture without contemplating these visual celebrations of conformity and consumption, and this insightful, entertaining volume of social history helps us do just that.

Book How Sweet it was

Download or read book How Sweet it was written by Arthur Shulman and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One can obtain as many opinions about television as there are people with eyes. No two people see it in exactly the same way. You may not be aware of it, but up there, in that compartment of your brain where memories are stored, all sorts of strange images are stockpiled. The purpose of this book is to coax those memories out of their hiding places and bring them front and center, where you can savor them anew. Although this book is intended to be a comprehensive review of television during the past twenty years-the two decades that have passed since the medium became a commercial reality- it is not to be just a scholarly history. The programs and people represented here were chosen not because they were "good" or "popular" or "successful," but because each contributed, in some large or small way, to the progress of television.

Book One Nation Under Television

Download or read book One Nation Under Television written by J. Fred MacDonald and published by Wadsworth Publishing Company. This book was released on 1994 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since commercial television emerged in the late 1940s, it has been on the cutting edge of social, political, economic, and cultural developments in the United States and the world. This book is a provacative history of how the major networks schemed to gain ratings and power, and to keep the FCC at bay. The result was the creation of limited and rigidly standardized television offerings. Professor MacDonald examines how the introduction of cable TV in the 1980s has weakened the power of the networks and reshaped the industry.

Book Just One More Thing

Download or read book Just One More Thing written by Peter Falk and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In JUST ONE MORE THING, Peter Falk takes us on an acting journey that begins not in Hollywood but in Hartford, where he worked as a management analyst for the Connecticut State Budget Bureau. His time there was no more successful than an earlier attempt to find work with the Central Intelligence Agency. At loose ends, Falk turned to an old college interest: acting. He came to prominence as an actor in 1956 in the highly successful Off-Broadway revival of 'The Iceman Cometh' with Jason Robards. Although he worked continuously for the next three years, bouncing from one Off-Broadway theater to the next, a theatrical agent advised him not to expect much work in motion pictures because of his glass eye. Surgeons had removed his right eye, along with a malignant tumor, when he was three years old. But in 1958, the actor made the jump to Hollywood, where he landed his first movie, 'Murder Incorporated', and was nominated for an Oscar. Next came Frank Capra's 'A Pocketful of Miracles' starring Bette Davis, which garnered Falk his second Oscar nomination. Falk was a favorite among moviegoers during the 1960s, admired for his roles in classic comedies such as 'It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' and 'The Great Race'. However, it was through his collaboration with filmmaker John Cassavetes that Falk entered into his most creative period in 1970. Motion pictures such as 'Husbands' and 'A Woman Under the Influence' helped launch the independent film movement. Nevertheless, Falk continued to act in light film comedies, including 'The In-Laws' and Neil Simon's 'The Cheap Detective' and 'Murder by Death', among others. Yet it was through television that Falk reached his widest audience. He has portrayed the beloved Lt. Columbo since the 1970s, winning four Emmys. The series was so successful that ten years after it's demise, 'Columbo' was re-launched, bringing Falk to a new generation of viewers. JUST ONE MORE THING also chronicles the author's more recent work, such as movie appearances in 'A Shark's Tale' and Paul Reiser's 'The Thing About My Folks', as well stories of growing up in New York, Hollywood and Broadway luminaries, and the author's accomplished passion for drawing and painting.
