Book Glisterings LaTeX and Other Oddments

Download or read book Glisterings LaTeX and Other Oddments written by Peter Wilson and published by Tex Users Group. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Glisterings columns primarily covers LaTeX topics, with excursions into fonts, graphics, bookbinding, and more. The focus is on practical answers to specific questions posed by users. Generally, several answers are presented with accompanying discussion. The Glisterings column was a popular feature in TUGboat, the journal of the TeX Users Group, from 2001 to 2017. The present volume collects all published columns, and adds a comprehensive bibliography and index, along with a few updates to the text, as needed. TeX is a sophisticated typesetting system that has been in widespread use since approximately 1980. TeX's originator, Donald Knuth, structured the system so users could add functionality. It remains the state of the art. The TeX Users Group (TUG) is a membership-based non-profit organization founded in 1980, for those who have an interest in typesetting, typography and font design and/or are users of the TeX typesetting system. New members, volunteers, and donations are always welcome; please visit www.tug.org.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is indeed a lucky author who is given the opportunity to completely rewrite a book barely a year after its publication. Writing about software affords such op portunities (especially if the original edition sold out), since the author is shooting at a moving target. u\TEX and AMS-u\TEX improved dramatically with the release of the new stan dard IbTEX (called u\TEX2) in June of1994 and the revision of AMS-u\TEX (ver f sion 1.2) in February ofl995. The change in AMS-u\TEX is profound. u\TEX2 f made it possible for AMS-IbTEX to join the u\TEX world. One of the main points of the present book is to make this clear. This book introduces u\TEX as a tool for mathematical typesetting, and treats AMS-u\TEX as a set of enhancements to the standard u\TEX, to be used in conjunction with hundreds of other u\TEX 2f enhancements. I am not a TEX expert. Learning the mysteries of the system has given me great respect for those who crafted it: Donald Knuth, Leslie Lamport, Michael Spivak, and others did the original work; David Carlisle, Michael J. Downes, David M. Jones, Frank Mittelbach, Rainer Schopf, and many others built on the work of these pioneers to create the new u\TEX and AMS-LATEX.

Book The Fracking Debate

Download or read book The Fracking Debate written by Jonathan M. Fisk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disputes around fracking, and oil and gas policy, follow a long tradition of complicated intergovernmental relationships. Proponents argue that fracking supports new and well-paying jobs, revitalizes state and local economies, and that it can help replace reliance on other fossil fuels. Skeptics and opponents contend that oil and gas production via fracking contaminates air and water resources, causes earthquakes, and can ruin the character of many communities. Examining the intergovernmental politics of the first oil and natural gas boom of the 21st century, The Fracking Debate, Second edition offers a holistic understanding of the politics that characterize oil and natural gas operations, including why local governments are challenging their state’s preemptive authority, in order to initiate a larger conversation about improving intergovernmental relationships. Author Jonathan Fisk presents a novel argument about the ways in which local, state, regional, and national approaches to governance of shale gas development can work together to reduce conflict and forward the interests of the communities exposed to development, asking important questions such as: What state structures govern state-local relations? What state institutions impact and shape oil and gas production? What is the policymaking context in the state? What are the costs and benefits of hydraulic fracturing at the national, state, and local levels? How are risks and rewards distributed within states? What local policies have challenged the state, and why would local communities challenge the state? The result is a book that demonstrates that when stakeholders acknowledge their interdependencies and one another’s expertise, they create, design, and implement more responsive, strategic, and targeted public policies. The Fracking Debate, Second edition will be required reading for courses on oil and gas policy in the United States, environmental politics, and domestic energy politics, as well as a vital reference for practitioners and policymakers working in these fields.
