But even if the Council of Scrutators agrees to Vithis’s demands, can anything satisfy his thirst for vengeance? Tiaan, now feeling utterly betrayed, is hunted through the abandoned city of Tirthrax by an implacable Nish, who burns at her previous rejection of his advances, and blames her for the invasion. The future of the world rests in the hands of three flawed people. Tiaan, whose geomancy holds the key to the power that can save or destroy humanity. Nish, who has sworn to redeem himself by bringing her to justice. And beautiful, brave, haunted Irisis, whose great talents are hidden even from herself. A gripping read.” Enigma “This is, attractively, grimmer and grittier than most fantasy novels with a real sense of industrial squalor and a society in paranoid melt-down-and with a neatly unpleasant set of twists at the end.” Roz Kaveney, Amazon.uk “Irvine imagines the epic landscape through which the characters move in persuasive detail and describes it powerfully.” Australian Book Review. “A page-turner of the highest order ... Irvine can now consider himself comfortably ranked next to the works of Robert Jordan and David Eddings and, more appropriately, the mighty Anne McCaffrey. Formidable!” SFX

Book excerpt: If only they could talk? Now one of them does. And not just any nag. THE TETRARCH was one of the Turfs greatest racehorses. The oddly marked colt is acknowledged as the fastest two-year-old ever to set hoof on an English racecourse. His freakish powers set him apart: he was a phenomenon. Retired undefeated amid sensational circumstances, the charismatic grey proved an unenthusiastic stallion. Yet he fathered Classic winners and became champion sire, establishing dynasties that ensure his influence is felt to this day throughout the bloodstock world. Only an elite few racehorses become public idols and earn themselves a nickname. This is the story of THE SPOTTED WONDER as he might tell it.

Download or read book From the Tetrarchs to the Theodosians written by Scott McGill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated collection of essays examining the politics, social networks, law, historiography, and literature of the later Roman world. The volume treats three central themes: the first section looks at political and social developments across the period and argues that, in spite of the stress placed upon traditional social structures, many elements of Roman life remained only slightly changed. The second section focuses upon biographical texts and shows how late-antique authors adapted traditional modes of discourse to new conditions. The final section explores the first years of the reign of Theodosius I and shows how he built upon historical foundations while unfurling new methods for utilising, presenting, and commemorating imperial power. These papers analyse specific events and local developments to highlight examples of both change and continuity in the Roman world from 284-450.

Book excerpt: When Edward and Rosanna step through an antique door they have bought for their apartment in Edinburgh, they enter a place at right angles to real time, the country of Los, based on William Blake's Book of Los, and The Song of Los. Here, the conventional greeting is, "Have you loved well?" The Tetrach of the title is a "horse" of prehistoric origins equipped with razor-sharp teeth and menacing claws, deadly to his enemies but loyal to his masters, more than once saving them from death or capture as they struggle to carry out the ever more difficult tasks assigned them by Thapsis, the Arch-Adept.

Download or read book The Empire of the Tetrarchs written by Simon Corcoran and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of Diocletian and Constantine is a significant period for the Roman empire, with far-reaching administrative changes that established the structure of government for three hundred years a time when the Christian church passed from persecution to imperial favour. It is also a complexperiod of co-operation and rivalry between a number of co-emperors, the result of Diocletian's experiment of government by four rulers (the tetrarchs). This book examines imperial government at this crucial but often neglected period of transition, through a study of the pronouncements that theemperors and their officials produced, drawing together material from a wide variety of sources: the law codes, Christian authors, inscriptions, and papyri. The study covers the format, composition, and promulgation of documents, and includes chronological catalogues of imperial letters and edicts,as well as extended discussions of the Gregorian and Hermogenian Codes, and the ambitious Prices Edict. Much of this has had little detailed coverage in English before. There is also a chapter that elucidates the relative powers of the members of the imperial college. Finally, Dr Corcoran assesseshow effectively the machinery of government really matched the ambitions of the emperors. The additional notes in this revised edition of the hardback contain details of recent epigraphic work and discoveries, especially from Ephesus, as well as an account of a long ignored rescript ofDiocletian.

Download or read book Beneath the Waves written by A.S Evans and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2010-07-26 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the Royal Navy Submarine Service in 1901, 173 submarines have been lost and in many circumstances with their entire crew. War inevitably takes a heavy toll: in World War Two alone 341 officer and 2,801 ratings failed to return to harbour. The loss of personnel was roughly equivalent to the strength of the Submarine Arm at the outbreak of war. Between the first loss, A1 in 1904, and the last, Artemis in 1971, lie many stories in which cool nerve was very much in evidence and one can marvel at the escape of the only survivor of Perseus; and of the sinking of Olympus from which the few survivors had to swim seven miles before receiving help; and of Surgeon-Lieutenant Charles Rhodes who died that others may live. These and many other accounts of submarine escape are described within this history and whenever possible in the words of survivors or witnesses.
