In their care, she develops a formidable intellect, but as a teenager she is somewhat overweight; an unfortunate combination for a woman in 1940s America. Believing that this will affect her chances of finding a husband, to provide her with a degree of autonomy, her father and grandfather turn her into an outstanding violin connoisseur. In spite of their efforts, determined to control her own destiny, Grace seduces an older English violin dealer. However, when the pair move to war ravaged London, her plan backfires. Using their daughter as leverage, her husband controls Grace's every move. In 1965, after years of oppression and exploitation, Grace, begins a torrid affair with her husband’s youngest employee. Things reach a crisis when Grace discovers that her father-in-law has been hoarding a collection of antique violins that were stolen by the Nazis. Horrified, Grace arranges for the instrument’s restitution. Returning to the United States alone, in Washington DC Grace becomes embroiled in women’s emancipation, equal rights and the anti-Vietnam war movement.

Book The Violin

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2006-02-09
  • ISBN : 1135576955
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book The Violin written by Mark Katz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-02-09 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violin was first mentioned in a book in the sixteenth century. An abundant and diverse literature on the instrument has grown since then, and a complete general guide to these materials has not been produced in the modern era. The last, Edward Heron-Allen's De Fidiculis Bibliographia , was published in1894. This book fills that void, organizing and annotating information on the violin from a variety of fields and sources. It provides a comprehensive, though selective, guide to all facets of the instrument. The book is divided into 4 main parts: Reference and General Studies; Acoustics and Construction; Violin Playing, Performance Practice, and Music; and Violinists, Composers, and Violin Teachers. It will serve as a ready reference for students and scholars, and is a welcome addition to the esteemed Routledge Music Bibliography series.

Humor and irony underline the action, which moves through Flensburg, Brussels and Zrich to New York and Washington, D.C. When will it all end? Perhaps not until the source of coded signals emanating from the opera building is found. Perhaps not until Igor can place a pebble on the stone.

Book Masterpieces of Italian Violin Making 1620 1850

Download or read book Masterpieces of Italian Violin Making 1620 1850 written by David Rattray and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2000-12-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unique view of the work of the great Italian violin-makers from the 17th to the 19th centuries, based on the collection of The Royal Academy of Music in London. The Academy, founded in 1822, is Britain's senior conservatory and one of the oldest institutions in the world for advanced musical training. Included here are masterpieces by Amati, Cappa, Celoniato, Ceruti, Dalla Costa, Deconet, Gagliano, Grancino, Guadagnini, Guarneri, Landolfi, Pressenda, Rota, Rugeri, Seraphin, Sorsana, Stradivari, Tecchler, and Testore. This revised edition has an updated descriptive text, features 15 extra entries, devotes at least two full-color spreads to each instrument, and is supplemented with a new dendrochronological study. Specially-commissioned photographs display each violin, viola, or cello with large, high-quality illustrations, revealing details of these instruments as never before. The Academy's collection of stringed instruments consists of around 100 violins and a similar combined number of violas and celli, the majority of which were received as gifts over the last century, beginning with the Rutson Bequest in 1906. These working instruments are maintained in fine playing condition and generally are in the hands of young musicians during their time as students or at the outset of their careers. The fine selection presented here underlines the collection's core of masterpiece Italian violins, and for the most part this book includes only those instruments in the purest state of conservation.

Book JESUS IN A NEW LIGHT

    Book Details:
  • Author : Manfred Bauer

  • Release : 2021-11-25
  • ISBN : 3755738430

Download or read book JESUS IN A NEW LIGHT written by Manfred Bauer and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-11-25 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical statements and beliefs that were shaped by the ancient mindset have been mindlessly repeated for way too long. In the process, some of these ideas were eventually dogmatized. By investigating the historical origin of such dogmas, the author carries out an in-depth analysis of the contents of established Christian doctrines without bothering about political correctness. He is outspoken, but is careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. This book is therefore especially aimed at people with an interest in theology who are no longer satisfied with the usual clichés. During his research, the author put expert opinions to the test and found out quite frequently that they leave much to be desired. He realized that many a Bible scholar makes his or her point on the basis of a limited and incomplete view of the world that is shaped, as the case may be, by his or her own faith or atheism. As a result of the globalization that has occurred over the past few decades and the greater insight it has afforded us into other religions and worldviews, our perspective on the nature and abilities of spiritual masters such as Jesus has broadened considerably. Since such discoveries have been taken into account only rarely in "biographies" of Jesus, it has been the author's intention to illustrate parallels between the teachings and actions of Jesus and those of spiritual masters from other religions. This book also asks the questions: What message does the Shroud kept in turin Cathedral convey to us? Did Jesus really lie in it? Does the Shroud make it possible for us to see Jesus` face some 2000 years after his death? With forensic meticulousness, the author provides proof that not everything went by the book during the 1988 radiocarbon dating that "exposed" the Shroud as a medieval fake. The role of the Catholic Church leadership comes thereby under intense scrutiny. Hence, the aim of this unconventional book is to invite the reader to accompany the author as he tries, with the help of Jesus' example, to acquire a better understanding of the meaning and purpose of human existence and to show what consequences such a better understanding might have for the way we conduct our lives.
