Book Testing of Materials Under Ablative Conditions

Download or read book Testing of Materials Under Ablative Conditions written by Harry A. King and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new and superior materials for rockets and missiles is one of the most important phases of the current space program. Such development requires extensive testing under conditions that simulate actual exposure as closely as possible. A few hundred degrees difference in gas temperature, a change in gas velocity, or in chemical composition can markedly alter the resistance that a material might exhibit to a particular ablative condition. The conditions surrounding a particular missile material are generally very "unusual," that is, temperatures of 5000 F or more, gas velocities of Mach 10 or higher, highly oxidizing atmospheres, and other equally difficult conditions. Previous attempts to duplicate these "unusual" conditions in the laboratory have resulted in such expensive and space-consuming apparatus as wind tunnels, shock tubes, and complete test rocket motors. To overcome the cost, space, and power problems and to help speed up materials research and the flow of new materials to the missile industry, the Aerojet-General Corp. began a program to determine whether simple, inexpensive equipment could be developed or designed to give meaningful test results. With such equipment, it was hoped that new and superior materials would be developed at a substantially faster rate than at present.

Book Comparison of Measurements of Internal Temperatures in Ablation Material by Various Thermocouple Configurations

Download or read book Comparison of Measurements of Internal Temperatures in Ablation Material by Various Thermocouple Configurations written by Marvin B. Dow and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internal temperatures measured by various thermocouple configurations in a charring ablator and in a porous ceramic subjected to severe heating in an electric-powered arc jet are presented and discussed. The results show that measurement errors of several hundred degrees can result from the conduction of heat from the hot junction of the thermocouple by the thermocouple lead wires. The measurement of internal temperatures in materials with low values of thermal conductivity subjected to severe heating by thermocouples requires that the thermocouple produce a minimum temperature disturbance within the material. A comparison was made of several thermocouple sensors designed to minimize internal temperature disturbances caused by heat conduction from the hot junction by the sensor material. These thermocouple sensors had short lengths of the sensor lead wire in the isothermal plane of the hot junction. This comparison showed that the temperatures indicated by these thermocouple sensors agreed reasonably well.

Book Multidimensional Gas Flow Through Permeable Char Layers and Its Effects on Ablation

Download or read book Multidimensional Gas Flow Through Permeable Char Layers and Its Effects on Ablation written by Harold G. Bush and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical analysis of the pressure fields within the char layers of cylindrical and hemispherical ablation models is presented. The distribution over the surface of mass flow from the char layer is given for both geometries. These multidimensional mass-flow distributions show that gas flow through the char layer can be significantly different from the one-dimensional assumption previously used by ablation analysts. Further, the theoretical results show that it is possible for the external pressure field to cause gas flow into the char layer, in which case the diffusion of energy and oxygen through the boundary layer to the material surface is increased. The appropriate analytical results were used to modify an existing one-dimensional ablation computer program to make convective blocking at the ablator surface responsive to the major parameters governing mass flow through permeable char layers. A comparison of analytical and experimental results shows that ablation performance can be significantly affected by multidimensional mass flow through the char layer.

Book Free flight Investigation of Ablation Effects N the Stability of Conical Reentry Configurations

Download or read book Free flight Investigation of Ablation Effects N the Stability of Conical Reentry Configurations written by C. J. Welsh and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 1000-ft aeroballistics range was used to obtain free-flight stability and drag data for slightly blunted 10-deg semiangle cones with and without ablation occurring on the conical skirts. The configurations investigated included ones having fore- and aft-positioned ablation sleeves, as well as one with a skirt material which did not ablate. The investigation was conducted for a Mach number near 14 and a Reynolds number, based on cone length and free-stream conditions, of about 55000.
