Download or read book Origins of the Great Purges written by John Arch Getty and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-01-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the structure of the Soviet Communist Party in the 1930s. Based upon archival and published sources, the work describes the events in the Bolshevik Party leading up to the Great Purges of 1937-1938. Professor Getty concludes that the party bureaucracy was chaotic rather than totalitarian, and that local officials had relative autonomy within a considerably fragmented political system. The Moscow leadership, of which Stalin was the most authoritarian actor, reacted to social and political processes as much as instigating them. Because of disputes, confusion, and inefficiency, they often promoted contradictory policies. Avoiding the usual concentration on Stalin's personality, the author puts forward the controversial hypothesis that the Great Purges occurred not as the end product of a careful Stalin plan, but rather as the bloody but ad hoc result of Moscow's incremental attempts to centralise political power.

Download or read book Stalin Mao Communism and their 21st Century Aftermath in Russia and China written by Miguel A. Faria, Jr. and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-17 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes salient and momentous events, as well as gruesome episodes, in the history of communism under Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union and Mao Tse-tung in China, and narrates succinctly the historic major happenings that have taken place since that time up to the 21st century, such as hostilities, espionage, and actual confrontations—occurrences that have affected relations between those two nations vis-à-vis the West and the United States. The author corrects the historic record where it needs amending given new information that has come to light, and redresses political biases that have arisen and to which none of us are immune. This book serves as a sincere warning about the evils not only of the full-blown imposition of totalitarianism via revolution, but also of the implementation of socialism and authoritarianism via evolution, asserting that full economic and political freedom is always best.

Book excerpt: Revolutionary novelist, historian, anarchist, Bolshevik and dissident-Victor Serge is one of the most compelling figures to have emerged from the history of the Soviet Union. A dedicated activist who joined the Bolsheviks in 1919 and fought in the siege of Petrograd, only to be later consigned to poverty and persecution for rejecting both capitalism and Stalinism, he was a keen observer of his times. Carefully wrought and meticulously researched, Susan Weissman's Victor Serge is the definitive biography of an extraordinary man.
