Book Testifying on the Hill A Guide to Survival

Download or read book Testifying on the Hill A Guide to Survival written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With recent wars, both cold and hot, safely disposed, there remains for the military officer only one great fear: that of being called to testify before a congressional committee. Though officers are always seeking an opportunity to excel, few of them relish the chance to travel to Capitol Hill and present themselves before the members and staff of Congress. "I'd rather have a root canal without anesthesia," is the way one combat-decorated colonel expressed it to me one day. I expect this feeling is well-nigh universal among career members of the military, and there are good reasons for such trepidation. First of all, a hearing is not an equal contest. The congressional committee holds all the cards. Its members set the agenda, schedule the time, and tell you what they want you to talk about. They control the hearing room, and they invariably put you on a lower level physically, so that they can look down upon you from on high. If they are hostile in their questioning and you "win" the hearing on points by showing up one of the members or staff and making him look foolish, they have the last laugh when they cut your budget or punish you with report language that strips you of power and position. Second, the committee will probably spend longer preparing for the hearing than you will, and they may know more about the subject of the hearing than you do. Just as you have staff-or perhaps you are the staff officer preparing your superior for the hearing-congressional committees also have professional staff members, some 2000 of them at the end of 1991. Many of these individuals are young, bright, and aggressive, while others are older and have as much experience as you do-perhaps more. Third, though the committee staffers will probably do their best to tell you what they think the committee will want to know about, you can almost count on some member to ask a question that is totally off the subject.

Book Reconstruction Violence and the Ku Klux Klan Hearings

Download or read book Reconstruction Violence and the Ku Klux Klan Hearings written by Shawn Alexander and published by Macmillan Higher Education. This book was released on 2015-01-23 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully edited selection of testimony from the Ku Klux Klan hearings reveals what is often left out of the discussion of Reconstruction—the central role of violence in shaping its course. The Introduction places the hearings in historical context and draws connections between slavery and post-Emancipation violence. The documents evidence the varieties of violence leveled at freedmen and Republicans, from attacks hinging on land and the franchise to sexual violence and the targeting of black institutions. Document headnotes, a chronology, questions to consider, and a bibliography enrich students’ understanding of the role of violence in the history of Reconstruction.

Book The Testimony of Michael Cohen Former Attorney to President Donald Trump

Download or read book The Testimony of Michael Cohen Former Attorney to President Donald Trump written by Elijah Cummings and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Donald J. Trump, the President of the United States, commit bank fraud and tax fraud on a massive and continuing scale while in office? Did he write hush-money checks before the 2016 election to silence women with whom he had hidden extramarital relationships, thus breaking campaign finance laws? Did he use non-profit charitable foundation funds to line his own pockets and furnish art for his golf clubhouses? Did he put himself in league with Russian oligarchs close to Vladimir Putin? Was he a racist, a conman and a cheat? Did he lie to the nation and the world over 8700 times in the first three years of his Presidency? Bolstered by documentary exhibits and on the strength of his decade of service as Donald Trump's former attorney, Michael Cohen made such allegations during his testimony and hearings of February 29, 2019 before the House Committee on Oversight & Reform. A series of 24 Democratic representatives of the House questioned him for proof and details of these claims.Alternatively, was Michael Cohen, convicted of lying before Congress, the very body before which he had once again been called, discredited as a witness and incapable of telling the truth? Was the hearing an exercise in futility and only designed to smear the President? That thesis was the counter-strategy employed by 18 Republican representatives of the House as they questioned Mr. Cohen. The partisan disputes during the public proceedings reflected sharp divisions in the American body politic. Still, the speakers labeled each other "gentleman" and "gentlelady" throughout. The transcript is complete, verbatim and carefully reconstructed from audio recordings. The transcribers played and replayed the words and phrases of each participant time and again until the correct text could be reproduced, right down to "um" and "ah." No annotations, omissions or additions interfere with the message.Thoroughly researched allusions and mentions of names, locations, institutions, publications, and so forth, reflect the accurate spellings and background information.Evenhanded, non-biased illustrations for each of the 43 participants - from I.T. Meladeca - provide a rich, visual feel for the event."This would be perfect for civics class... if we had civics classes anymore.""Every American - for that matter every citizen of the world - should determine if the claims of Michel Cohen are legitimate. The visual documentary evidence can help with that.""Whatever your political persuasion, this transcription will let you draw your own conclusions."

Book Congress Overwhelmed

Download or read book Congress Overwhelmed written by Timothy M. LaPira and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congress today is falling short. Fewer bills, worse oversight, and more dysfunction. But why? In a new volume of essays, the contributors investigate an underappreciated reason Congress is struggling: it doesn’t have the internal capacity to do what our constitutional system requires of it. Leading scholars chronicle the institutional decline of Congress and the decades-long neglect of its own internal investments in the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform as a first-rate legislature. Today’s legislators and congressional committees have fewer—and less expert and experienced—staff than the executive branch or K Street. This leaves them at the mercy of lobbyists and the administrative bureaucracy. The essays in Congress Overwhelmed assess Congress’s declining capacity and explore ways to upgrade it. Some provide broad historical scope. Others evaluate the current decay and investigate how Congress manages despite the obstacles. Collectively, they undertake the most comprehensive, sophisticated appraisal of congressional capacity to date, and they offer a new analytical frame for thinking about—and improving—our underperforming first branch of government.

Book Republic Lost

Download or read book Republic Lost written by Lawrence Lessig and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard Law School professor Lawrence Lessig investigates the most vexing problem in American democracy: how money corrupts our nation's politics, and the critical campaign to stop it. In an era when special interests funnel huge amounts of money into our government-driven by shifts in campaign-finance rules and brought to new levels by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission-trust in our government has reached an all-time low. More than ever before, Americans believe that money buys results in Congress, and that business interests wield control over our legislature. With heartfelt urgency and a keen desire for righting wrongs, Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig takes a clear-eyed look at how we arrived at this crisis: how fundamentally good people, with good intentions, have allowed our democracy to be co-opted by outside interests, and how this exploitation has become entrenched in the system. Rejecting simple labels and reductive logic-and instead using examples that resonate as powerfully on the Right as on the Left-Lessig seeks out the root causes of our situation. He plumbs the issues of campaign financing and corporate lobbying, revealing the human faces and follies that have allowed corruption to take such a foothold in our system. He puts theissues in terms that nonwonks can understand, using real-world analogies and real human stories. And ultimately he calls for widespread mobilization and a new Constitutional Convention, presenting achievable solutions for regaining control of our corrupted-but redeemable-representational system. In this way, Lessig plots a roadmap for returning our republic to its intended greatness. While America may be divided, Lessig vividly champions the idea that we can succeed if we accept that corruption is our common enemy and that we must find a way to fight against it. In Republic Lost, he not only makes this need palpable and clear-he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.

Book So You ve Been Asked to Testify Before Congress

Download or read book So You ve Been Asked to Testify Before Congress written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning About the Hearing. Why me? The Committee Chairman usually sends a letter to the Defense Department that describes the subject of the hearing and invites the witnesses the committee wants to hear from. Witnesses are chosen for either their expertise or because of their position. Why have a hearing? Hearings create an official record of information and opinions, while providing members of Congress an opportunity to present their views and challenge opponents. Before legislation is considered on the floor of the House or Senate, committees are required to make available to all members the transcripts of hearings related to that legislation. Therefore, your statements could influence the final version of a defense bill.

Book Congressional Military Witness Preparation

Download or read book Congressional Military Witness Preparation written by LeRoy W Svendsen (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Testifying before an increasingly critical, budget-conscious Congress places added emphasis on the quality of a witness selected to appear before it. The report investigates how to avoid the pitfalls which typically discredit a witness and reduce his persuasiveness; how witnesses are selected and prepared; and how Congressional Committees function. A dozen Members of Congress and senior staff personnel were interviewed to determine their impressions of the most effective witness characteristics. Congressional Hearing testimony was examined to find examples which illustrate significant problem areas contributing to the witnesses loss of persuasiveness and credibility.
