Book Test of QED Using a Laser at the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam

Download or read book Test of QED Using a Laser at the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiment {number_sign}144 at SLAC has three parts: the search for low-mass states excited in [gamma][gamma] collisions and observed in pair decay, the study of nonlinear, nonperturbative QED in [gamma]e and [gamma][gamma] collisions, and its possible applications to general purpose linear colliders. Such colliders could produce the full range of J{sub q··{bar q}}/{sup PC} states, leptoquarks J{sub l{center_dot}{center_dot}{bar q}}/{sup PC}, the particles of supersymmetry, the top quark or Higgs. However, to realize them a number of technical problems need resolution that are addressed in E144 together with interesting possibilities for highly polarized, high brightness [gamma]/{sup {yields}} e{sup {yields}±} beams that are needed for electroweak studies.

Book Test of QED at Critical Field Strength

Download or read book Test of QED at Critical Field Strength written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a new experiment at the Final Focus Test Beam at SLAC, a low-emittance 46.6 GeV electron beam is brought into collision with terawatt pulses of 1,054 nm or 527 nm wavelength from a Nd:glass laser. Peak laser intensities of 10[sup 18] W/cm[sup 2] have been achieved corresponding to a value of 0.6 for the parameter[eta]= e[var-epsilon]m[omega][sub 0]c. In this case, an electron that crosses the center of the laser pulse has near-unit interaction probability. Results are presented for multiphoton Compton scattering in which an electron interacts with up to four laser photons, in agreement with theoretical calculations.

Book Results of Final Focus Test Beam

Download or read book Results of Final Focus Test Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beam experiments of Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) started in September 1993 at SLAC, and have produced a 1.7[micro]m x 75 nm spot of 46 GeV electron beam. A number of new techniques involving two nanometer spot-size monitors have been developed. Several beam diagnostic/tuning schemes are applied to achieve and maintain the small spot. This experiment opens the way toward the nanometer world for future linear colliders.

Book Design of Optics for the Final Focus Test Beam at SLAC

Download or read book Design of Optics for the Final Focus Test Beam at SLAC written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the Final Focus Test Beam experiment (FFTB) is to produce an electron beam spot of 1 .mu.m by 60 nm in transverse dimensions. In the future linear collider of TeV region (TLC), a typical spot size of 100 nm by 1 nm at the interaction point is required to get luminosity of 1 x 1034cm/sup /minus/2/s/sup /minus/1/. This spot size is about 1/1000 of the SLC in the vertical dimension, and is demanding for an optics design, alignments, beam diagnostics, and tuning procedures. The spot size of the FFTB will be an important next step from the SLC toward the TLC. This paper describes the design of the beam optics. 11 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

Book First Results from the Final Focus Test Beam

Download or read book First Results from the Final Focus Test Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have used the Final Focus Test Beam beamline and associated instrumentation to reduce the 46.6 GeV SLAC electron beam to a vertical size of 70 nm. This represents a reduction from the linac beam size by a factor of 320, comparable to the demagnification required by a TeV-scale linear collider, and addresses the same aberrations predicted in such an environment. The beam dimensions were measured by two novel beam size monitors at the focal point. Details of the optical and hardware design of the beam line, necessary tuning operations, beam size monitor principles, and future plans are discussed.

Book The Final Focus Test Beam Laser Referene System

Download or read book The Final Focus Test Beam Laser Referene System written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original design for the SLAC linac included an alignment reference system with 270 diffraction gratings situated along the 3000 meter linac. These gratings have provided SLAC with a global reference line repeatable to within 200 micro meters. For the Final Focus Test Beam, this laser system has been extended and 13 new diffraction gratings have been installed. Improvements targets and the availability of new instruments allows us to evaluate the performance of the laser reference system at the 510 micro meter level. An explanation of the system and the results of our evaluation are presented.

Book Results from the Final Focus Test Beam

Book excerpt: First experimental results from the Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) are given in this report. The FFTB has been constructed as a prototype for the final focus system of a future TeV-scale electron-positron linear collider. The vertical dimension of the 47 GeV electron beam form the SLAC linac has been reduced at the focal point of the FFTB by a demagnification of 320 to a beam height of approximately 70 nanometers.

Book Studies of Nonlinear QED in Collisions of 46 6 Electrons with Intense LaserPulses

Download or read book Studies of Nonlinear QED in Collisions of 46 6 Electrons with Intense LaserPulses written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on measurements of quantum electrodynamic processes in an intense electromagnetic wave, where nonlinear effects (both multiphoton and vacuum polarization) are prominent. Nonlinear Compton scattering and electron-positron pair production have been observed in collisions of 46.6 GeV and 49.1 GeV electrons of the Final Focus Test Beam at SLAC with terawatt pulses of 1053 nm and 527 nm wavelengths from a Nd:glass laser. Peak laser intensities of approximately 0.5 x 10[sup 18] W/cm[sup 2] have been achieved, corresponding to a value of approximately 0.4 for the parameter[eta]= eE[sub rms]/m[omega][sub 0]c, and to a value of approximately 0.25 for the parameter[Upsilon][sub e]= E[sub rms]/E[sub crit]= eE[sub rms][h-bar]/m[sup 2]c[sup 3], where E[sub rms] is the rms electric field strength of the laser in the electron rest frame. We present data on the scattered electron spectra arising from nonlinear Compton scattering with up to four photons absorbed from the field. A convolved spectrum of the forward high energy photons is also given. The observed positron production rate depends on the fifth power of the laser intensity, as expected for a process where five photons are absorbed from the field. The positrons are interpreted as arising from the collision of a high-energy Compton scattered photon with the laser beam. The results are found to be in agreement with theoretical predictions.
