Book Low Cycle Fatigue Testing Using Digital Random Sequences with Computer Control

Download or read book Low Cycle Fatigue Testing Using Digital Random Sequences with Computer Control written by R. E. Shoe and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years there has been an increasing interest in the problem of fatigue damage accumulation in the low cycle fatigue range, as there has been for some time in the high cycle range. In many instances, the amplitude of the cycles of strain or stress are variable. A test technique which demonstrates damage accumulation under both variable and constant amplitude loading would help clarify the differences in fatigue damage buildup in each case. Toward this end, the technique of random loading, which is already attractive for service simulation in many cases, appears useful for fundamental studies of damage accumulation. Since the number of cycles involved in low cycle fatigue (to failure) is low, digital techniques for random loading are especially attractive. They carry with them the added feature of step-by-step monitoring of hysteresis loop energy, as well as close control of the variable involved (usually total strain). In the test program described in this paper, the results of a random walk in strain amplitude (where the polarity is reversed on each step) on the fatigue life of an aluminum alloy are presented, against a background of conventional (zero mean strain) constant amplitude S-N test results. To perform these tests, digital-computer-controlled closed-loop equipment was used in strain control. Interfacing with the test machine required digital-to-analog command conversion, and analog-to-digital transducer information conversion. A subroutine for creating random numbers was developed in the software system for the computer. Constant strain rate (triangular) cycles of strain were used throughout. To characterize the material used in this test program, a separate software program was developed which yielded the true stress-true strain curve. A special dual-range extensometer was developed for this part of the program.

Book excerpt: Descripción del editor: "Significance and Use4.1The axial force fatigue test is used to determine the effect of variations in material, geometry, surface condition, stress, and so forth, on the fatigue resistance of metallic materials subjected to direct stress for relatively large numbers of cycles. The results may also be used as a guide for the selection of metallic materials for service under conditions of repeated direct stress.4.2In order to verify that such basic fatigue data generated using this practice is comparable, reproducible, and correlated among laboratories, it may be advantageous to conduct a round-robin-type test program from a statistician's point of view. To do so would require the control or balance of what are often deemed nuisance variables; for example, hardness, cleanliness, grain size, composition, directionality, surface residual stress, surface finish, and so forth. Thus, when embarking on a program of this nature it is essential to define and maintain consistency a priori, as many variables as reasonably possible, with as much economy as prudent. All material variables, testing information, and procedures used should be reported so that correlation and reproducibility of results may be attempted in a fashion that is considered reasonably good current test practice.4.3The results of the axial force fatigue test are suitable for application to design only when the specimen test conditions realistically simulate service conditions or some methodology of accounting for service conditions is available and clearly defined. 1. Scope1.1This practice covers the procedure for the performance of axial force controlled fatigue tests to obtain the fatigue strength of metallic materials in the fatigue regime where the strains are predominately elastic, both upon initial loading and throughout the test. This practice is limited to the fatigue testing of axial unnotched and notched specimens subjected to a constant amplitude, periodic forcing function in air at room temperature.1.2The use of this test method is limited to specimens and does not cover testing of full-scale components, structures, or consumer products.1.3The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.1.4The text of this standard references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard.Note 1:The following documents, although not directly referenced in the text, are considered important enough to be listed in this practice:E739 Practice for Statistical Analysis of Linear or Linearized Stress-Life (S-N) and Strain-Life (?-N) Fatigue DataSTP 566 Handbook of Fatigue Testing1.5This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee." Book Fatigue of Metallic Materials

Download or read book Fatigue of Metallic Materials written by M. Klesnil and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-04-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews problems in the mechanical behaviour of cyclically loaded metallic materials, primarily with regard to the nature of the fatigue process. The first edition of the book appeared in 1980. The present second edition represents a revised form of the original book and also covers recent developments in the field. As the book focuses on physical-metallurgical aspects, it occupies a unique and important position in the technical literature, which has so far been devoted mainly to engineering metal fatigue problems and their technical solution in specific practical cases. The book provides a compact review of current knowledge on physical metallurgical processes that accompany and affect the fatigue of metallic materials, and also presents the background for applying the new results to practical designing and to the selection of materials in engineering practice. The authors present an updated review of results from countries both in the east and the west and cover a relatively large field in a concise manner. The work will be of value to research workers and students following advanced and post-graduate courses in the fields of materials science and mechanical engineering.
