Useful supplemental material included for the reader are a comparison of the TESOL Technology Standards with other technology-focused standards, extensive reference lists, a glossary, and an index. Even practitioners with little access to technology resources can apply the standards in their contexts, while those with a great deal of access to technology are encouraged to do as much as their resources will allow. Vignettes provide detail-specific resources, and attempt to offer free and open-source technology alternatives where possible, and in some instances they suggest technology for the physically disabled. Although the vignettes tend to focus on English language learning and teaching, the technology standards can be applied to languages other than English.

Book excerpt: The starting point for this project was the question in how far a Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) module in a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) course can bring the students up to the required level of being confident CALL users. The teachers' part of the TESOL Technology Standards Framework was chosen as evidence for the level of training required. Each standard was first matched against the components of an existing CALL module. Standards that were not met were then filtered for achievability in a preservice teacher training situation. Next, all remaining standards were examined to find out whether they could be incorporated into the module, either by modification of an existing element or the introduction of new elements. A second step involved the evaluation of components of the CALL course that did not seem to contribute to helping the students reach any of the technology standards. One of the goals of this procedure was to give more structure to the process of regular updates of the module content, beyond simply updating the software used in the module, and to allow for a more principled improvement of the module over the years. The WIDA Consortium is a group of ten states, formed in 2002 with federal monies, that has developed comprehensive English language proficiency standards. Each of the five language proficiency standards is divided into the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The five levels of language proficiency reflect characteristics of language performance at each developmental stage and include: starting (L1), emerging (L2), developing (L3), expanding (L4), and bridging (L5).

Book excerpt: Using the TESOL Technology Standards for Language Teachers as a framework and following the After Action Review method, this research adopted an explanatory sequential mixed methods design to (a) investigate language teachers’ knowledge and skills to integrate technology into instruction in the initial quantitative study (first phase), (b) explore recommendations for developing the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate technology into instruction in the follow-up qualitative study (second phase), and (c) examine the validity/appropriateness of the TESOL Technology Standards for Language Teachers through the mixed results analyses (third phase). The findings of the quantitative phase reveal that participating teachers performed at different levels among the foundational knowledge and skills in technology (Goal 1), the pedagogical knowledge and skills with technology (Goal 2), the knowledge and skills to apply technology in record-keeping, feedback, and assessment (Goal 3), and the use of technology to improve communication, collaboration, and efficiency (Goal 4). The findings of the quantitative study also show that there are correlational relationships between the four goals. The qualitative results in the second phase indicate that interview participants in Group Experienced and Group Novice could provide recommendations and articulate types of support needed at different levels, and both groups need support to improve their technology integration knowledge and skills in instruction. Finally, the mixed results, through the joint displays of the qualitative results and the quantitative results, reveal that the TESOL Technology Standards for Language Teachers remain applicable and helpful to teachers in current educational contexts. However, the findings indicate that due to evolving technology and issues emerging over the decade, further updates for performance indicators are needed. The findings include recommendations for potential updates. This research is significant, because, informed by empirical data, this study makes recommendations for teacher educators, teacher training programs, language teachers, administrators, standard researchers/ policy makers, and other relevant stakeholders about the use of the TESOL Technology Standards for Language Teachers and the teacher technology integration education
