Download or read book The British Aristocracy in Popular Culture written by Stefania Michelucci and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As traditional social hierarchies fall away, ever steeper levels of economic inequality and the entrenchment of new class distinctions lend a new glamor to the idea of aristocracy: witness the worldwide popularity of Downton Abbey, or the seemingly insatiable public fascination with the private lives of the British royal family. This collection of new essays investigates the enduring attraction to the icon of the aristocrat and the spectacle of aristocratic society. It traces the ambivalent reactions the aristocracy provokes and the needs (political, ideological, psychological, and otherwise) it caters to in modern times when the economic power of the landed classes have been eroded and their political role curtailed. In this interdisciplinary collection, aristocracy is considered from multiple viewpoints, including British and American literature, European history and politics, cultural studies, linguistics, visual arts, music, and media studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To accompany the exhibition in the Austrian Pavilion for the 55th Biennale di Venezia, a landmark publication titled "Austria and the Venice Biennale 1895-2013" will be launched in May 2013. This scholarly, 400-page publication will present, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of each individual exhibition, with the help of previously unpublished photographs, plans and correspondence drawn from public and private archives in several different countries. The list of artists presented by Austria at the Venice Biennale over the last 120 years includes most, if not all, of the leading figures of its cultural avantgarde: from Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, Hermann Nitsch and Arnulf Rainer to VALIE EXPORT, Maria Lassnig and Franz West.
Download or read book Murano Island of Glass written by Attilia Dorigato and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murano owes its worldwide fame to blown glass. The works created by the skillful hands of the island's master glassblowers have been exported East and West for centuries now, providing some of the most exquisite decorations for royal palaces and princely homes, and arousing the wonder and delight of travellers, poets and writers throughout the ages. Attilia Dorigato, Director of the Murano Glass Museum, traces all the key stages in the development of this age-old craft. Running from the Middle Ages to the heart of the contemporary world, her study focuses particular attention on the master glass-makers of the late part of the twentieth century. This up-to-date survey draws on an extraordinary range of photographs, some of them being published for the first time, and constitutes a fundamental work for anyone who wishes to understand the history of glass. Special illustrated appendices are included to reveal the techniques and secrets of this fascinating craft; what tools the master glassblowers use;
Download or read book Symbolism Its Origins and Its Consequences written by Rosina Neginsky and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of the symbol is at the root of the Symbolist movement, but this symbol is different from the way it was used and understood in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In the Symbolist movement, a symbol is not an allegory. The Belgian writer Maurice Maeterlinck defined its essence in an article that appeared on April 24, 1887, in L’Art moderne. He wrote that the notion of a symbol in the Symbolist movement is the opposite of the notion of the symbol in classical usage: instead of going from the abstract to the concrete (Venus, incarnated in the statue, represents love), it goes from the concrete to the abstract, from “what is seen, heard, felt, tasted, and sensed to the evocation of the idea.” This volume attempts to give a glimpse into the power of the Symbolist movement and the nature of its fundamental and interdisciplinary role in the evolution of art and literature of the twentieth century. It records the studies of a group of scholars, who met and discussed these topics together for the first time in 2009. While illuminating the specificity of Symbolism in art, architecture and literature in different European countries, these articles also demonstrate the crucial role of French Symbolism in the development of the international Symbolist movement. The authors hope that an expanding group, a society of Art, Literature and Music in Symbolism and Decadence (ALMSD), born out of the first meeting, will continue to further this discussion at future conferences and in the printed conference proceedings.

Book excerpt: Sir Thomas Brassey (1836–1918), later Earl Brassey, was a politician with a particular interest in maritime affairs. He was a keen sailor, and his wife's accounts of their many voyages (also reissued in this series) were bestsellers. He subsequently became a Lord of the Admiralty and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, and Brassey's Naval Annual was for many years the authoritative survey of worldwide navies. This five-volume survey of the state of the British Navy was published between 1882 and 1883. Brassey was much involved with questions of the modernisation and reform of the Navy, at a time when international relations were marked by a maritime arms race. The books provide much technical detail about the different types of ship and weapons available to the Navy. Volume 4 discusses the administration of the Navy and Admiralty, and of reserve forces.

Download or read book Gustav Klimt written by Gustav Klimt and published by . This book was released on 2001-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa organized this exhibition of Klimt's paintings and drawings, for which this substantial (and oversize 10.25x12.25") volume is the catalog. The artist's devotion to the female form is evident, as one would expect, but there are also portraits and landscapes. The essays situate Klimt within the artistic milieu of Vienna, with regard to the French Impressionists and modern art, in terms of the applied arts, and describe the art world's reception of Klimt in his own time. c.
