Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatises Concerning Prayer, Concerning Baptism Having been honoured with an invitation to con tribute a translation of a portion of some Father's works, with the suggestion that Tertullian would be acceptable, I chose the sister treatises on Prayer and Baptism, in \the belief that these would prove of as much interest as any to the constituency the seeks to reach. I cannot claim any special familiarity with these treatises, though I hope this volume may contain something of interest even to the professional scholar. Tertullian, a layman and lawyer, deals with the controversies that surrounded baptism in his day.

Book excerpt: Happy is our sacrament of water, in that, by washing away the sins of our early blindness, we are set free and admitted into eternal life! A treatise on this matter will not be superfluous; instructing not only such as are just becoming formed (in the faith), but them who, content with having simply believed, without full examination of the grounds of the traditions, carry (in mind), through ignorance, an untried though probable faith. The consequence is, that a viper of the Cainite heresy, lately conversant in this quarter, has carried away a great number with her most venomous doctrine, making it her first aim to destroy baptism. Which is quite in accordance with nature; for vipers and asps and basilisks themselves generally do affect arid and waterless places. But we, little fishes, after the example of our Jesus Christ, are born in water, nor have we safety in any other way than by permanently abiding in water; so that most monstrous creature, who had no right to teach even sound doctrine, knew full well how to kill the little fishes, by taking them away from the water!

Book A Treatise on Baptism and a Treatise on Confirmation

Download or read book A Treatise on Baptism and a Treatise on Confirmation written by Saint Basil the Great and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHEN the meaning of a commission is called in question, the public acts of those who received it, must have great weight in determining its nature and character: and when the authority of the commissioners is vouched for by him who gave the commission, their acts are decisive evidence. Christ ordered his disciples to baptize. An attempt is made to explain this of a mere internal work of the Spirit, towards which the Apostles could co-operate no further than by preaching. Did the Apostles themselves so understand it? Did they not rather conceive themselves authorized and commanded to wash with water those who professed faith in the Gospel preached by them? When the Jews felt compunction for the death of Christ, and asked of Peter what they should do to be saved, he exhorted them to be baptized; and three thousand persons on that occasion were added by baptism to the Church. Book God is Said to do that which He Only Permits

Download or read book God is Said to do that which He Only Permits written by Troy J. Edwards and published by Troy Edwards. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It is usual in Scripture to attribute to the Supreme Power, acts which are virtually those of his instruments, and which he merely permits.” – Charles Edward Fraser-Tytler Many false charges have been leveled at God by His critics (atheists, agnostics, satanists, etc.) due to misreading the Bible. Part of the problem has been the failure to understand the idiomatic language used in the Ancient Near East, especially among the Hebrew people, from which our God inspired Scriptures have their origin. This failure has led to more misunderstandings about God and His inspired Word than we can attest to. While the Hebrews had numerous idioms I am fully persuaded that the most neglected one among theologians and Bible translators has been what I prefer to label as “the permission idiom”. This is the idiom that, as we will learn in this study, scholars tell us is one in which God is said to be the cause of that which He merely allowed or permitted or did not prevent from happening. May the Lord use this book to help you understand Him and your Bible better.

Download or read book Answering Speech written by Daniel J. Brendsel and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pursuing an Expansive Life of Prayer In wondrous contrast to silent idols, the one true God speaks. He addresses his people in love, and it's their great privilege to answer him in prayer. At its root, prayer isn't mere self-expression or a prod to get a silent God to speak, but it is a learned skill to answer God's initiating word in Christ. Through this thoughtful book, author and pastor Daniel J. Brendsel explains how responding to God can nurture prayerful engagement with Scripture, shape healthy rhythms among God's praying people, and spur excitement for communion with God. For those disappointed by their current life of prayer, Answering Speech invites readers to enter into an expansive and exuberant life of response to the Father through the Son in the power of the Holy Spirit. Offers a Unique Perspective: Explores how Christians are not initiators of prayer but responders to what God has already done Appeals to Pastors and Thoughtful Laypersons: Focuses on important issues that should be taught within the local church Theological yet Accessible: Deeply rooted in theology, this book offers encouragement and practical rhythms for prayer
