Book Tertullian Origen and Cassian on Prayer

Download or read book Tertullian Origen and Cassian on Prayer written by Quintus Tertullian and published by . This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quintus Tertullian (c. 160-c. 220) is distinguished by being the first major Christian thinker to write in the Latin language. According to Eusebius, he was raised in Carthage, the son of a Roman centurion. Following his conversion to the faith, he became an impassioned defender of the rights of Christians. Origen Adamantius (c. 185-254) taught in Alexandria, reviving the catechetical school of Alexandria in which Clement of Alexandria had taught. His translations, commentaries, and theological works mark him as one of the finest minds of early Christianity. John Cassian (c. 360-435), born in Europe, first joined a monastery in Palestine and then traveled to Egypt to learn from the Desert Fathers. After his return to Europe, he founded a monastery in southern France. His writings would eventually influence St. Benedict, who recommended Cassian's texts to his monks. All three writers in this collection offer reflections on the Lord's Prayer, together with practical advice for prayer. This common ground provides a basis for comparisons, along with a rich picture of Christian spirituality in the ancient world. At the same time, the authors address questions about prayer that are still relevant today.

Book excerpt: “Prayer is real religion,” said Auguste Sabatier. If so, the academic study of prayer allows scholars to examine the very heart of religious practices, beliefs, and convictions. Since prayers exist in a wide variety of content, contexts, forms, and practices, a comprehensive approach to the study of prayer is required. Therefore, this volume includes scholars from a wide range of disciplines, in order to discover the breadth of “real religion” from the first to the fifteenth centuries. This volume especially focuses upon the history of Christianity and monasticism, where prayer was the school of hope, faith, and critical thought, awakening the faithful to every aspect of religious and daily life. Contributors are L. Edward Phillips, Karlfried Froehlich, Michael Joseph Brown, David W. Fagerberg, Columba Stewart, Benedicta Ward, Susan Boynton, Corey Barnes, Johannes Heil, Rik Van Nieuwenhove, Roger S. Wieck, Paul W. Robinson and Roy Hammerling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short book, besides what it may suggest of help in the way of godliness, gives an insight into the mind of a man of strong opinions who was not afraid to express them, as also into the life of a community some at least of whom were not indisposed to make experiments, however little their mentor is prepared to afford them encouragement. The time was soon to come when he, as a Montanist, was to try to enforce many new practices, on the ground that, "Our Lord Jesus Christ said, 'I am the truth,' not 'I am the custom.'" -- From the introduction

Book excerpt: Tertullian on Prayer.Tertullian gives us the essentials on prayer. Starting with the Lord's Prayer, he breaks down each section, giving us expounded meaning into each phrase. He then goes on to discuss where and when we should pray, how we should pray and what the importance of prayer is in our faith life."But how far more amply operative is Christian prayer! It does not station the angel of dew in mid-fires, nor muzzle lions, nor transfer to the hungry the rustics' bread; it has no delegated grace to avert any sense of suffering; but it supplies the suffering, and the feeling, and the grieving, with endurance: it amplifies grace by virtue, that faith may know what she obtains from the Lord, understanding what-for God's name's sake-she suffers." -Tertullian

Book Daily Prayer in the Early Church

Download or read book Daily Prayer in the Early Church written by Paul F. Bradshaw and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In liturgical study, and especially in English liturgical study, the subject of the daily office has always been something of the poor relation', writes the author in his preface. This volume aims to do something to fill that gap. It begins with a detailed examination of the Jewish background and of the practice of daily prayer in the first three centuries of the Church, and goes on to trace the evolution of the divine office in both its monastic and secular forms in East and West down to the time of St. Benedict. Intended as a replacement for The Influence of the Synagogue upon the Divine Office by C. W. Dugmore (Alcuin Club Collection No. 45), it not only incorporates the results of recent research by continental scholars and others but also challenges traditional assumptions at a number of important points, offering a fresh interpretation of the evidence.

Book The Concept and Practice of Prayer in Tertullian s De Oratione and Origen s Peri Euches

Download or read book The Concept and Practice of Prayer in Tertullian s De Oratione and Origen s Peri Euches written by Gregory Ross Doyle and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores three factors which contributed to the concept and practice of prayer in two ancient Christian writings, 'De Oratione ' by Tertullian of Carthage and 'Peri Euches' by Origen of Alexandria. This thesis examines their concept of Scripture, their hermeneutic theory and their philosophical presuppositions. Further, this thesis demonstrates how these three factors contribute to the concept and practice of prayer in the works in question. The second chapter is devoted to a background discussion of these factors as they pertain to 'De Oratione' and ' Peri Euches'. The third through fifth chapters examine these authors' expositions of the Lord's Prayer along with topics they treat in common and in isolation from each other. This thesis also compares and contrasts the two authors' works in such a way that the differences between the two are explained based upon the varying presuppositions with which each author worked. This study is important since these two writings are the earliest treatises devoted to prayer. Tertullian's was the first while Origen's was an early comprehensive treatise on prayer. Tertullian and Origen are contrasted since each represents a distinct strand of ancient Christianity. Tertullian lived in the western portion of the Roman empire while Origen lived in the east. They were influenced by different philosophical traditions and used different hermeneutical methods. They were near contemporaries. These reasons lend support to the notion that a comparison of the two authors and their writings on prayer would be important.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus, commonly referred to as Tertullian (c. 160 - c. 220 AD), was raised in Carthage. He was thought to be the son of a Roman centurion, a trained lawyer, and an ordained priest. These assertions rely on the accounts of Eusebius of Caesarea, Church History, and St. Jerome's De viris illustribus (On famous men). Tertullian is the first Christian author to produce an extensive corpus of Latin Christian literature. He also was a notable early Christian apologist and a polemicist against heresy. Tertullian has been called "the father of Latin Christianity"and "the founder of Western theology." Though conservative, he did originate and advance new theology to the early Church. He is perhaps most famous for being the oldest extant Latin writer to use the term Trinity (Latin trinitas),and giving the oldest extant formal exposition of a Trinitarian theology.[Other Latin formulations that first appear in his work are "three Persons, one Substance" as the Latin "tres Personae, una Substantia" . He wrote his trinitarian formula after becoming a Montanist; his ideas were at first rejected as heresy by the church at large, but later accepted as Christian orthodoxyScant reliable evidence exists to inform us about Tertullian's life. Most history about him comes from passing references in his own writings.
