Download or read book Tertullian and Paul written by Todd D. Still and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might late second/early third century readings of Paul illuminate our understanding of the first century texts? A close comparison of Tertullian and Paul reveals the former to be both a dubious and a profoundly insightful interpreter of the latter. With growing interest in the field of patristic exegesis, there is a need for examination of Tertullian's readings of Paul. Tertullian, the first among the significant Latin writers, shaped generations of Christians by providing both a vocabulary for and an exposition of elemental Christian doctrines, wherein he relied heavily on Pauline texts and appropriated them for his own use. This new collection of essays presents a collaborative attempt to understand, critique, and appreciate one of the earliest and most influential interpreters of Paul, and thereby better understand and appreciate both the dynamic event of early patristic exegesis and the Pauline texts themselves. Each chapter takes a two pronged approach, beginning with a patristic scholar considering the topic at hand, before a New Testament response. This results in a fast paced and illuminating interdisciplinary volume.

Book The Writings of Tertullian Volume I

Download or read book The Writings of Tertullian Volume I written by Tertullian and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book in a four part series includes the writings of one of the first true theologians. This first volume is more of a treaty on Apologetics, the defense of the Christian faith, and brings to view the idea of the apology, the use and end results of idols, along with many other pieces of theology that we in the church should be making a part of our theology even in today's world. Even though the writings are nearly two thousand years old, the relevance is becoming more and more clear in today's world where false teaching is flourishing and thriving.

Book Clement of Alexandria Collection 3 Books

Download or read book Clement of Alexandria Collection 3 Books written by Clement of Alexandria and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 1029 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA COLLECTION [3 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Titus Flavius Clemens, known as Clement of Alexandria to distinguish him from the earlier Clement of Rome, was a Christian theologian who taught at the Catechetical School of Alexandria. A convert to Christianity, he was an educated man who was familiar with classical Greek philosophy and literature. As his three major works demonstrate, Clement was influenced by Hellenistic philosophy to a greater extent than any other Christian thinker of his time, and in particular by Plato and the Stoics. His secret works, which exist only in fragments, suggest that he was also familiar with pre-Christian Jewish esotericism and Gnosticism. In one of his works he argued that Greek philosophy had its origin among non-Greeks, claiming that both Plato and Pythagoras were taught by Egyptian scholars. Among his pupils were Origen and Alexander of Jerusalem. Clement is regarded as a Church Father, like Origen. He is venerated as a saint in Coptic Christianity, Ethiopian Christianity and Anglicanism. He was previously revered in the Roman Catholic Church, but his name was removed from the Roman Martyrology in 1586 by Pope Sixtus V on the advice of Baronius. —BOOKS— EXHORTATION TO THE HEATHEN THE INSTRUCTOR THE STROMATA, OR MISCELLANIES PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Book Tertullian and the Church

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Rankin
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1995-08-17
  • ISBN : 0521480671
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book Tertullian and the Church written by David Rankin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-08-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Tertullian of Cathage a schismatic? How did he view the church and its bishops? How did he understand the exercise of authority within the church? In this study David Rankin sets the writings of Tertullian in the context of the early third century church and the developments it was undergoing in relation to both its structures and its self-understanding. He then discusses Tertullian's own theology of the church, his imagery and his perception of church office and ministry. Tertullian maintained throughout his career a high view of the church, and this in part constituted the motivation for his vitriolic attacks on the church's hierarchy after he had joined the New Prophecy movement. His contribution to the development of the church has often been misunderstood, and this thorough exploration provides a timely reassessment of its nature and importance.

Book On the Apparel of Women

Download or read book On the Apparel of Women written by Tertullian and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-19 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female habit carries with it a twofold idea--dress and ornament. By "dress" we mean what they call "womanly gracing;" by "ornament," what it is suitable should be called "womanly disgracing." The former is accounted (to consist) in gold, and silver, and gems, and garments; the latter in care of the hair, and of the skin, and of those parts of the body which attract the eye. Against the one we lay the charge of ambition, against the other of prostitution; so that even from this early stage (of our discussion) you may look forward and see what, out of (all) these, is suitable, handmaid of God, to your discipline, inasmuch as you are assessed on different principles (from other women), --those, namely, of humility and chastity.
