Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leontine Stanfield's: Book of Verse There are many people to whom the monotony of an interminable tract of perfectly smooth asphalt pavement would soon become irritating, and would so grip their nerves that they would positively long for the bumps and jolts and jars, the hills and hollows and even the mud holes of a rough country road. There are many more people with music in their souls who do not understand grand opera than those who do, and many more who appreciate a happy thought or quaint conceit told in brief verse, terse and to the point, yet who fail utterly to comprehend that intangible translucent fret-work of moonlightand perfume and good, grey matter gone wrong, called Poetry, though willingly admitting its beauty, grandeur and loftiness, also its faultless rhythm, that seems to flow on and on forever, yet never reaching any perceptible point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero and Leander: A Poem IN venturing to dedicate these lines to you, I cannot estimate with what degree of feeling they will be measured by yourself, nor how a general public will sit in judgment over my audacity, leaving the quality of my work entirely out of the case. Still, as I hope you will reflect kindly upon the motive, I trust the world will forgive me for placing on my first patent so good and reliable a trade mark. I know it is but an old thing put forth with new trimmings - and even these are wanting in finish, - yet what there may be in fitness will go to the wardrobe of the mind's noblest issue. Not for getting my obligations, nor expecting that they ever can be paid, I beg leave to remain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Bible Vision Vol 1 written by S. A. Witmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Vision, Vol. 1: June, 1937 In this day you must be disillusioned. When you come to Bible school, -the church does not assume the responsibility to assimilate you. Some Bible school graduates find it so difficult to adjust themselves that they never fit into the life of the church. Don't forget that the things that you have acquired will never be learned until they are incorporated into actual life. Beyond these you will build a superstructure. SO you are just now beginning to learn. This is gratifying to parents. A son, after graduating from college wrote home to his father this terse message, Hymn 551, last verse.' The father hurriedly looked up the number in the Old hymnal, and there he found these lines, Troubles over, sorrow ended, Jordan passed. I want to speak to you on things that abide. We are not only living in a changing world; we are living in a perishing world. The great universe is dissipating its energies. When physicists study the physical world, they are sure that it is expending its resources. I think it is hard for us to predict what the future will be even in the light of the Scriptures. Everywhere there is a breaking down and going to pieces. We read in the Word that the outward man perisheth. It is true that in the physical universe nothing is annihilated, but everywhere there is change. Our political institutions and our standards Of right and wrong are undergoing profound modifications. Book Jelly Roll

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin Young
  • Publisher : Knopf
  • Release : 2005-02-01
  • ISBN : 0375709894
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Jelly Roll written by Kevin Young and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this jaunty and intimate collection, Kevin Young invents a language as shimmying and comic, as low-down and high-hearted, as the music from which he draws inspiration. With titles such as “Stride Piano,” “Gutbucket,” and “Can-Can,” these poems have the sharp completeness of vocalized songs and follow a classic blues trajectory: praising and professing undying devotion (“To watch you walk / cross the room in your black / corduroys is to see / civilization start”), only to end up lamenting the loss of love (“No use driving / like rain, past / where you at”). As Young conquers the sorrow left on his doorstep, the poems broaden to embrace not just the wisdom that comes with heartbreak but the bittersweet wonder of triumphing over adversity at all. Sexy and tart, playfully blending an African American idiom with traditional lyric diction, Young’s voice is pure American: joyous in its individualism and singing of the self at its strongest.

Book The New Oxford Book of Eighteenth Century Verse

Download or read book The New Oxford Book of Eighteenth Century Verse written by Roger Lonsdale and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No previous anthology has succeeded in illustrating so thoroughly the kinds of verse actually written in the eighteenth century. The familiar tradition is fully represented by selections from such poets as Pope, Swift, Tomson, Gray, Smart, Goldsmith, Cowper, Burns, and Blake. In addition, the anthology includes verse by many forgotten writers, both men and women, from all levels of society. Although they have never figured in conventional literary history, they wrote humorous, idiosyncratic, and graphic verse about their personal experience and the world around them, in a way that should challenge received ideas about the period's restraints and inhibitions.

Book Scripture Canon and Commentary

Download or read book Scripture Canon and Commentary written by John B. Henderson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major contribution to the study of the Chinese classics and comparative religion, John Henderson uses the history of exegesis to illuminate mental patterns that have universal and perennial significance for intellectual history. Henderson relates the Confucian commentarial tradition to other primary exegetical traditions, particularly the Homeric tradition, Vedanta, rabbinic Judaism, ancient and medieval Christian biblical exegesis, and Qur'anic exegesis. In making such comparisons, he discusses some basic assumptions common to all these traditions--such as that the classics or scriptures are comprehensive or that they contain all significant knowledge or truth and analyzes the strategies deployed to support these presuppositions. As shown here, primary differences among commentarial or exegetical traditions arose from variations in their emphasis on one or another of these assumptions and strategies. Henderson demonstrates that exegetical modes of thought were far from arcane: they dominated the post-classical/premodern intellectual world. Some have persisted or re-emerged in modern times, particularly in ideologies such as Marxism. Written in an engaging and accessible style, Scripture, Canon, and Commentary is not only a challenging interpretation of comparative scriptural traditions but also an excellent introduction to the study of the Confucian classics. Book Nostradamus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Denis Crouzet
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2018-03-16
  • ISBN : 150950771X
  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book Nostradamus written by Denis Crouzet and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most enigmatic figures in history, Nostradamus - apothecary, astrologer and soothsayer - is a continual source of fascination. Indeed, his predictions are so much the stock-in-trade of the wildest merchants of imminent Doom that one could be forgiven for forgetting that Michel de Nostredame, 1503-1566, was a figure firmly rooted in the society of the French Renaissance. In this bold new account of the life and work of Nostradamus, Denis Crouzet shows that any attempt to interpret his Prophecies at face value is misguided. Nostradamus was not trying to predict the future. He saw himself, rather, as 'prophesying', i.e. bringing the Word of God to humankind. Like Rabelais, for whom laughter was a therapy to help one cope with the misery of the times, Nostradamus thought of himself as a physician of the soul as much as of the body. His unveiling of the menacing and horrendous events which await us in the future was a way of frightening his readers into the realisation that inner hatred was truly the greatest peril of all, to which the sole remedy was to live in the love and peace of Christ. This inspired interpretation penetrates the imaginative world of Nostradamus, a man whose life is as mysterious as his writings. It shows him in a completely new dimension, securing for him a significant place among the major thinkers of the Renaissance.
