Download or read book Thumbs Down written by David Cauthen and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-01-14 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The telephone's insistent ringing at three in the morning snatched Sam Workman from dreamless sleep. "Hello," he mumbled. "This is a warning," said a digitally altered voice. "Leave Betterton now! If you don't, you won't live long enough to regret it." "Who is this?" Sam angrily demanded to a dead line. "Unknown name, unknown number," blinked the call identifier. "Coward!" Workman growled and slammed down the receiver. The call was the first episode in a conspiracy to force Sam and his business, B&W Concrete, out of Betterton or destroy them. Followed were attempts to oust B&W from two construction projects, a hospital addition and an engine plant, totaling $400 million in construction costs to yield B&W $10 million profits. Sam retains attorney Penn Roman to stem the tide of disastrous actions drowning B&W in a flood of claims of incompetency and fraud and more threats and violence against Sam, Penn, and Penns family. When a testing lab employee working on the projects disappears, and the newspaper prints libelous articles condemning B&W, Penn and Sam find themselves entangled in a web of greed, deceit, violence, and murder. Courageously, they face the schemers in an explosive and telling trial to the finish.

Download or read book House Secrets written by Mike Lawson and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mysterious death of a journalist pulls Washington fixer Joe DeMarco into a conspiracy of power and politics in “one of the best thrillers of the year” (Booklist). Author of House Witness, 2019 Edgar Award Finalist for Best Novel Days after claiming he had a lead on a story that would make Watergate look like a misdemeanor, a mediocre writer from the Washington Post is found accidentally drowned. But Joe DeMarco’s boss—the Speaker of the House—thinks there’s nothing accidental about it. Mostly because the reporter was on the trail of Senator Paul Morelli. Morelli is all but a shoe-in for the Democratic presidential nomination. But his golden boy public persona hides a monstrous character. Somehow, all of his sinister scandals seem to be cleaned up by a mysterious benefactor who stays just out of sight. Setting up a sting to catch the predatory Morelli, DeMarco thinks his job is done—until those who helped him with the sting start turning up dead. And unless he can uncover the powerful people who are protecting Morelli, DeMarco knows he’s next . . . In this chilling novel of unfettered power and final justice, Mike Lawson proves once again that he “has a true insider’s insight about real-world spinelessness, venality, and corruption that have taken the place of moral courage and true leadership on Capitol Hill” (The Washington Times).
Download or read book For Sure written by France Daigle and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Sure is among other things a labyrinth, a maze, an exploration of the folly of numbers, a repository, a defense and an illustration of the Chiac language. Written in dazzling prose — which is occasionally interrupted by surprising bits of information, biography, and definitions that appear on the page — Daigle perfectly captures the essence of a place and offers us a reflection on minority cultures and their obsession with language. It is also the continuing story of Terry and Carmen, familiar to us from previous works, their children Etienne and Marianne, and all those who gravitate around the Babar, the local bar in Moncton — the Zablonskis, Zed, Pomme — artists and ordinary people who question their place in the world from a distinct point of view that is informed by their geography, and by their history, politics, and culture. Masterfully translated from French by award-winning translator Robert Majzels, For Sure is the moving story of a family and a surprising, staggeringly original work that represents a corner of our country.
Download or read book Silent Woods written by Will Emley and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent Woods By: Will Emley When Darwin Hall arrived at the farm, he could see Will Elliot’s pickup parked in a field entrance just north of Walnut Creek. Darwin stopped his Explorer on the road behind Will’s pickup. There was no activity around the pickup. He exited his Explorer to check Will’s pickup. The doors were locked. After waiting for a half hour, seeing no sign of Will, Darwin decided to walk in and check some of the stand locations. He had seen the locations on the maps that Will diligently maintained. Darwin knew that there were two stands located in the gravel pit west of the road and one more stand along Walnut Creek, east of the road. With flashlight in hand, Darwin walked along the edge of the field north of the creek towards the east fence line. The stand was located in the corner of the fence line and the creek. At the east end of the field, Darwin shined the light up in the trees trying to locate the stand. Seeing the stand, Darwin walked over to the tree. The stand was empty, and there was no sign that Will had been there. A work of fiction, Silent Woods tells of a deer bow hunter who arrowed a buck and blood trailed it into a large tract of public wildlife hunting area and was then shot and wounded, becoming a missing person in a thirteen-day survival ordeal.
