Download or read book Hindu Nationalism in the Indian Diaspora written by Edward T.G. Anderson and published by Hurst Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-07 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hindu nationalism is transforming India, as an increasingly dominant ideology and political force. But it is also a global phenomenon, with sections of India’s vast diaspora drawn to, or actively supporting, right-wing Hindu nationalism. Indians overseas can be seen as an important, even inextricable, aspect of the movement. This is not a new dynamic—diasporic Hindutva (‘Hindu-ness’) has grown over many decades. This book explores how and why the movement became popular among India’s diaspora from the second half of the twentieth century. It shows that Hindutva ideology, and its plethora of organisations, have a distinctive resonance and way of operating overseas; the movement and its ideas perform significant, particular functions for diaspora communities. With a focus on Britain, Edward T.G. Anderson argues that transnational Hindutva cannot simply be viewed as an export: this phenomenon has evolved and been shaped into an important aspect of diasporic identity, a way for people to connect with their homeland. He also sheds light on the impact of conservative Indian politics on British multiculturalism, migrant politics and relations between various minoritised communities. To fully understand the Hindutva movement in India and identity politics in Britain, we must look at where the two come together.

Download or read book Network Governance in Response to Acts of Terrorism written by Naim Kapucu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High performance during catastrophic terrorist events require the ability to assess and adapt capacity rapidly, restore or enhance disrupted or inadequate communications, utilize flexible decision making swiftly, and expand coordination and trust between multiple emergency and crisis response agencies. These requirements are superimposed on conventional administrative systems that rely on relatively rigid plans, decision protocols, and formal relationships that assume smooth sailing and uninterrupted communications and coordination. Network Governance in Response to Acts of Terrorism focuses on the inter-organizational performance and coordinated response to recent terrorist incidents across different national, legal, and cultural contexts in New York, Bali, Istanbul, Madrid, London, and Mumbai. Effortlessly combining each case study with content analyses of news reports from local and national newspapers, situation reports from government emergency/crisis management agencies, and, interviews with public managers, community leaders, and nonprofit executives involved in response operations, Naim Kapucu presents an overview of how different countries tackle emergencies by employing various collaborative decision-making processes, thus, offering a global perspective with different approaches. These features make this book an important read for both scholars and practitioners eager to reconcile existing decision-making theories with practice.

Download or read book Police and the Media written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Home Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interaction between police forces and journalists has become more frequent and professional in recent years, and the relationship can be mutually beneficial. The Home Affairs Committee felt the less-positive aspects of the relationship, however, warranted investigation. This report looks in particular at: the practice of holding off-the-record briefings during on-doing police operations; instances where police have failed to release information to the media; and attempts by the police to control media reporting. The Committee found it difficult to establish the precise extent of off-the-record briefing, but examples cited by witnesses convinced it that it occurs too frequently, and can be particularly damaging during counter-terrorism operations. It is not acceptable for officers to identify individual suspects to the media before charge, as this has the potential to damage the investigation, any subsequent trial and the reputation of suspects released without charge. The leaking of information from police officers to journalist breaches police discipline regulations, but forces often find it difficult to identify the source of the leak. Forces should be more forthcoming in providing on-the-record information to journalists about individual crimes. This in the public interest and greater openness can contribute towards greater public trust in police data. Attempting to influence or control media approaches and programmes is not the role of the police and can be seen as attacking freedom of expression.
Download or read book Homeland Security in the UK written by Paul Wilkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-06-18 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed examination of whether domestic security measures are striking an appropriate balance between homeland security and civil liberties in the post-9/11 era. Professor Paul Wilkinson and the other contributors assess the nature of UK responses to terrorism by key public and private-sector bodies, highlighting how these organizations can prevent, pre-empt, counter and manage terrorist attacks by using a matrix of factors such as types of terrorist networks, tactics and targets. The volume also compares and contrasts the UK's response with cognate states elsewhere in the EU and with the USA. While improved intelligence has helped prevent a major Al Qaeda attack, the authors conclude that there is still a ‘major question mark’ over whether the country is adequately resourced to deal with an emergency situation, particularly in major cities other than London. The book also confirms that while the UK faces a ‘real and serious’ threat of terrorist attack by Al Qaeda, it is better prepared for an attack than other EU member states. Homeland Security in the UK will be essential reading for all students of terrorism studies, security studies and politics, as well as by professional practitioners and well-informed general readers.
Download or read book Counter terrorism measures in British airports written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Home Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-03-24 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Home Affairs Committee states in a report published today (HCP 311, session 2009-10, ISBN 9780215545060) that the wider introduction of full-body scanners is a welcome development in airport security. It states though that the Government's position of adopting "proportionate" measures is a euphemism for adopting a wholly reactive stance and waiting for terrorists to demonstrate their new capabilities before implementing improved security measures. In view of the ongoing terrorist threat to airline passengers and staff the Committee urge the Government to constantly look for further technological measures to improve airport security. The Committee is satisfied that the privacy concerns that have been expressed in relation to these devices are overstated and that privacy concerns should not prevent the deployment of scanners, but is concerned at the delay in the introduction of other security devices such as hand-held Electronic Trace Detection equipment. The Committee also says that the Government should be wary of relying on one make or model of equipment and where possible conceal the technical specifications of equipment away from the public gaze. Also international standards in aviation security must be made more stringent and more must be done to tackle terrorism at the source. The Committee also raises concerns at the institutional separation of airport security from wider counter-terrorism measures.

Download or read book Preventing violent extremism written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Communities and Local Government Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report from the Communities and Local Government Committee (HCP 65, session 2009-10, ISBN 9780215545466) looks at "Preventing violent extremism". For the Committee, as delivered so far the Prevent programme has stigmatised and alienated those it is most important to engage, and tainted many positive community cohesion projects. Moreover, the government's strategy to limit the development of violent extremism in the UK sits poorly within a counter-terrorism strategy. The Committee has set out a number of improvements for the Prevent programme and calls on the government to clarify urgently how information collected for the purposes of project monitoring and community mapping under Prevent does not constitute 'spying' or 'intelligence gathering' of the type undertaken by the police or security services.
