Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israelis and Palestinians have been caught in what seems a forever war with routine terror in the promised land for more than 100 years. This book is the first to bring together commentary and anguished personal insights from people on both sides of the battle. Readers get a personal look at—and a clearer, more nuanced understanding of—the psychological trauma that is common for men, women and children there. Psychologists in the regions, as well as scholars from across disciplines, tell their personal stories, interwoven with academic reflections on important issues fueling the conflict such as humiliation, revenge, hate, and the need for a homeland and identity. Readers are brought face-to-face with controversial issues, like the psychological impact of Israel's Separation Wall, and unique perspectives, including the stories of eight Palestinian female martyrs, the insights of a young student helping to save blasted bodies after the bombing of a bus, the compassion of a Jewish doctor treating suicide bombers, the thinking of a Jidhadist woman raised to hate Jews but now working for peace with Israelis, and a doctor bringing together Palestinians and Israelis using meditation to find peace.

Book Terror in the Land of the Holy Spirit

Download or read book Terror in the Land of the Holy Spirit written by Virginia Garrard-Burnett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1982 and 1983, in the name of anti-communism the military government of Guatemala prosecuted a scorched-earth campaign of terror against largely Mayan rural communities. Under the leadership of General Efrain Rios Montt, tens of thousands of people perished in what is now known as la violencia, or 'the Mayan holocaust.' Rios Montt, Guatemala's president-by-coup was, and is, an outspokenly born-again Pentecostal Christian - a fact that would seem to be at odds with the atrocities that took place on his watch. Virginia Garrard-Burnett's book is the first in English to view the Rios Montt era through the lens of history. Drawing on newly-available primary sources such as guerrilla documents, evangelical pamphlets, speech transcripts, and declassified US government records, she is able to provide a fine-grained picture of what happened during Rios Montt's rule. Looking back over Guatemalan history between 1954 and the late 1970s, she finds that three decades of war engendered an ideology of violence that cut across class, cultures, communities, religions, and even families. Many Guatemalans converted to Pentecostalism during this period, she says, because of the affinity between these churches' apocalyptic message and the violence of their everyday reality. Examining the role of outside players and observers: The US government, evangelical groups, and the media, she contends that self-interest, willful ignorance, and distraction permitted the human rights tragedies within Guatemala to take place without challenge from the outside world.

Book We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land

Download or read book We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land written by Jimmy Carter and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Carter has been a student of the biblical Holy Land all his life. For the last three decades, as president of the United States and as founder of The Carter Center, he has studied the complex and interrelated issues of the region's conflicts and has been actively involved in reconciling them. He knows the leaders of all factions in the region who will need to play key roles, and he sees encouraging signs among them. Carter describes the history of previous peace efforts and why they fell short. He argues persuasively that the road to a peace agreement is now open and that it has broad international and regional support. Most of all, since there will be no progress without courageous and sustained U.S. leadership, he says the time for progress is now. President Barack Obama is committed to a personal effort to exert that leadership, starting early in his administration. This is President Carter's call for action, and he lays out a practical and achievable path to peace.

Book Hell in the Holy Land

  • Author : David R. Woodward

Download or read book Hell in the Holy Land written by David R. Woodward and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling WWI history reveals the harsh realities of the British Army’s Middle East campaign through the firsthand accounts of soldiers. The massive flow of British troops and equipment to Egypt made that country host to the largest British military base outside of Britain and France. Though many soldiers found the atmosphere in Cairo exotic, the desert countryside made operations extremely difficult. The intense heat frequently sickened soldiers, and unruly camels were the only practical means of transport across the soft sands of the Sinai. The constant shortage of potable water was a persistent problem for the troops. Drawing on the diaries, letters, and memoirs of British soldiers who fought in Egypt and Palestine, David R. Woodward paints a vivid picture of the mayhem, terror, boredom, filth, and sacrifice they endured. The voices of these soldiers offer a forgotten perspective of the Great War, describing not only the physical and psychological toll of combat but the daily struggles of soldiers who were stationed in an unfamiliar environment that often proved just as antagonistic as the enemy.

Book Inheriting the Holy Land

Download or read book Inheriting the Holy Land written by Jennifer Miller and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing with fierce honesty, Jennifer Miller has created an extraordinary synthesis of history, reportage, and coming-of-age memoir in Inheriting the Holy Land. Her groundbreaking perspective on the conflict is presented through interviews with young Israelis and Palestinians and conversations with some of the most influential officials involved in the Middle East, including Shimon Peres, Yasir Arafat, James Baker, Benjamin Netanyahu, Colin Powell, Ehud Barak, and Mahmoud Abbas. This book will open eyes, open hearts, and open minds. Miller grew up in an affluent suburb of Washington, D.C., surrounded by the chaotic politics of the Middle East. Her father was a U.S. State Department negotiator at the Oslo and Camp David peace summits, and dinnertime conversation in the Miller household often included discussions of the Middle Eastern conflict. When Miller joined Seeds of Peace, a program that brings Middle Eastern kids to Maine for intensive sessions of conflict resolution, her real experience with the Middle East began. As she befriended young Palestinians, Israelis, Egyptians, and Jordanians, Jennifer came to realize that their views were missing from the ongoing debate over the Holy Land. By helping these young voices be heard, she knew she could reveal something vitally new and deeply challenging about the future of this torn region. Miller, however, learned fast that it was one thing to hang out at the idyllic Seeds for Peace camp in Maine and quite another to confront young people on their own turf–in the alleys of East Jerusalem, behind the armed gates of West Bank settlements, in the teeming refugee camps of Gaza. Friendships that had blossomed in the United States withered in the aftermath of yet another suicide bombing. Big-hearted teens on both sides of the conflict shocked Miller with the ferocity of their illusions and the twisted logic of their misconceptions. But she also found rays of hope in places where others had reported only despair–surprising open-mindedness among the ultra-religious, common ground shared by those who had lost loved ones to the violence, a yearning for peace amid the rubble of refugee camps and the shards of bombed cities. A deft writer, she interweaves her startlingly candid interviews with the vibrant realities of life in the streets. Just as Jennifer Miller was forced to confront her biases as an American, a Jew, a woman, and a journalist, in Inheriting the Holy Land, she similarly challenges readers to reexamine their own cherished prejudices and assumptions.

Book Live by the Sword

  • ISBN : 1449725198

Download or read book Live by the Sword written by James Rothrock and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Live by the Sword portrays Israels struggle for existence in the Holy Land since becoming an independent Jewish state in 1948. Lieutenant Colonel James Rothrock draws on his military experience, travels in the Middle East, and academic background to present an authentic picture of the Jewish peoples quest for a home in Palestine, their fight for survival against multiple Arab invasions, the hundreds of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, and the ominous threats to their very existence today. Colonel Rothrock identifies the immediate threat to Israels survival as the Alliance of Terror, which consists of Iran and Syria and their terrorist surrogates, Hamas and Hezbollah. These purveyors of terror all have the common goal of destroying Israel. However, Rothrock warns that the greatest danger to Israels existence is Irans quest for nuclear weapons, coupled with the threats by Irans leaders to annihilate Israel. He makes a convincing argument that Irans nuclear ambitions are propelling the region toward a cataclysmic conflagration that could involve Israel, Iran, Arab states, and even major world powers. Colonel Rothrock is steadfast in his belief that the United States must stand resolutely with Israel and take action to forestall military or political events that could lead to the destruction of our only true ally in the Middle East.
