Keep our existence a secret. Period. The day my sister broke that rule one too many times, I knew there would be consequences. I expected us to be sent to one of those schools for “troubled” kids—and maybe Daizlei Academy was, in a way. But really, it was far more complicated than that. You see, I thought that world had forgotten me. Forgotten us. For years we were left alone, and one day . . . we weren’t. It was only when I got there that I remembered the second rule: Trust no one. Because in our world? They would kill me if they knew the truth of what I am. Daizlei Academy is a school for Supernaturals. And me? I’m so much more. *This is a New Adult Urban Fantasy Romance series with a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance and a strong but flawed heroine. Book excerpt: THE MERMAID’S TALE In a city of majesty and brutality, of warring races and fragile alliances, a sacred Mermaid has been brutally murdered. An abomination, a soulless Orc is summoned to hunt the killer. As the world around the Orc drifts into war and madness, her search for justice leads her on a journey to discover redemption and even beauty in the midst of chaos. "He said the Arukh only had one word. It was their word for rage and for pain, for fighting and dying. It was a word spoken in sorrow and anger. It was the word they said to a world that didn't want them, that had no place for them. It was loneliness and defiance and in the end it was sorrow and surrender. 'Arrah' he told me, it was all the words the Arukh needed." “This book is violent and brutal and haunting and beautiful. If I could give this a sixth star, I would" - Michael R. Fletcher, Author of Beyond Redemption D.G. Valdron is an utterly fearless writer. Frankly, I think he's one of the most original writers available today. -- Amazing Stories Online “The Mermaid=s Tale is a fable of personhood wrapped in a murder mystery framed by a fantasy setting, peopled by familiar races that are presented in subtly original ways.” – Melanie Martila “I absolutely loved this book; it's already one I know I'll remember for a long time. I would never have thought a book about an orc would be one of the best existential works I've ever read.” - - Julia Pike-kelly

Book Refugees in Extended Exile

Download or read book Refugees in Extended Exile written by Jennifer Hyndman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the international refugee regime and its ‘temporary’ humanitarian interventions have failed. Most refugees across the global live in ‘protracted’ conditions that extend from years to decades, without legal status that allows them to work and establish a home. It is contended that they become largely invisible to people based in the global North, and cease to remain fully human subjects with access to their political lives. Shifting the conversation away from the salient discourse of ‘solutions’ and technical fixes within state-centric international relations, the authors recover the subjectivity lost for those stuck in extended exile. The book first argues that humanitarian assistance to refugees remains vital to people’s survival, even after the emergency phase is over. It then connects asylum politics in the global North with the intransigence of extended exile in the global South. By placing the urgent crises of protracted exile within a broader constellation of power relations, both historical and geographical, the authors present research and empirical findings gleaned from refugees in Iran, Kenya and Canada and from humanitarian and government workers. Each chapter reveals patterns of power circulating through the ‘colonial present’, Cold War legacies, and the global ‘war on terror". Seeking to render legible the more quotidian struggles and livelihoods of people who find themselves defined as refugees, this book will be of great interest to international humanitarian agencies, as well as migration and refugee researchers, including scholars in refugee studies and human displacement, human security, globalization, immigration, and human rights.

Book excerpt: It all starts with a dare. Salome, a spirited young woman in Galilee, is perched in a tree and challenges Nathaniel, her smitten childhood friend, to climb onto a high branch after her. He falls and crushes a leg. Salome flees the scene in shock, abandoning Nathaniel. When Salome discovers her younger sister, Mariam (the Virgin Mary), is pregnant out of wedlock after their older sister, Rebekah, has been raped by Roman soldiers, she tries to raise the family’s reputation by marrying a man she barely knows, forsaking Nathaniel and nurturing guilt. At the same time, Nathaniel battles his own seemingly unrequited feelings for Salome and also marries another. Both Nathaniel and Salome wrestle with inner turmoil and become undercover messengers and freedom fighters for the Zealots in a fledgling rebellion. Their paths continue to cross over the years, and a tangled relationship simmers and evolves. This coming-of-age story is set in biblical times amid the brutal rule of Roman centurions yet has universal and modern-day relevance. Salome’s shame, fear, regret, love, integrity, and perseverance will resonate with anyone dealing with the desire to be “good.” The Good Sister is the first in a trilogy that follows Salome as she navigates the murky waters of human motivations and aspirations—only to discover that real love is not necessarily tied to goodness.
