Book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020

Download or read book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 written by Stephen T. Garnett and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2021-12 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 is the most comprehensive review of the status of Australia's avifauna ever attempted. The latest in a series of action plans for Australian birds that have been produced every decade since 1992, it is also the largest. The accounts in this plan have been authored by more than 300 of the most knowledgeable bird experts in the country, and feature far more detail than any of the earlier plans. This volume also includes accounts of over 60 taxa that are no longer considered threatened, mainly thanks to sustained conservation action over many decades. This extensive book covers key themes that have emerged in the last decade, including the increasing impact of climate change as a threatening process, most obviously in Queensland's tropical rainforests where many birds are being pushed up the mountains. However, the effects are also indirect, as happened in the catastrophic fires of 2019/20. Many of the newly listed birds are subspecies confined to Kangaroo Island, where fire destroyed over half the population. But there are good news stories too, especially on islands where there have been spectacular successes with predator control. Such uplifting results demonstrate that when action plans are followed by action on the ground, threatened species can indeed be recovered and threats alleviated.

Book Wildlife on Farms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Claridge
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 2003-03-18
  • ISBN : 0643099840
  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book Wildlife on Farms written by Andrew Claridge and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2003-03-18 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many landowners are interested in the native animals that live on their farms or once occurred there. In particular they want to know why particular species are present (or absent), what they can do to encourage them to visit, and what they might do to keep them there. Wildlife on Farms outlines the key features of animal habitats—large flowering trees, hollow trees, ground cover, understorey vegetation, dams and watercourses—and describes why landholders should conserve these habitats to encourage wildlife on their farms. It shows how wildlife conservation can be integrated with farm management and the benefits this can bring. The book presents 29 example species—mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians—that are common to a large part of southern and eastern Australia. Each entry gives the distinguishing features of the animal, key features of its required habitat, and what can be done on a farm to better conserve the species.

Book Woodlands

  • Author : David Lindenmayer
  • Publisher : CSIRO PUBLISHING
  • Release : 2005-09-09
  • ISBN : 0643099875
  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book Woodlands written by David Lindenmayer and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2005-09-09 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's little known woodlands once covered huge areas of the eastern side of our continent. Woodlands are distinguished from forests by the fact that their canopies do not touch, tree heights are usually lower and they usually have a grassy understorey. They support a fascinating and diverse array of birds, mammals, reptiles, frogs, invertebrates and plants, and have been under massive pressure from grazing and agriculture over the past 200 years. In many cases only small remnant patches of some types of woodland survive. Understanding and appreciating woodlands is an important way forward for promoting their sustainable management and conservation. Woodlands: A Disappearing Landscape explains with lucid text and spectacular photographs the role that woodlands play in supporting a range of native plants and animals that has existed there for millions of years. The book is set out as a series of logically linked chapters working from the woodland canopy (the tree crowns), through the understorey, the ground layers, and to the lowest lying parts of landscape – wetlands, creeks and dams. Each chapter illustrates many key topics in woodland biology with text and images, explaining important aspects of woodland ecology as well as woodland management and conservation.
