  • Pages : 317 pages

Download or read book Po s Volcano written by Franco Tassi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-16 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive description of the volcanological, petrological and geochemical features of the Poás Volcano (Costa Rica), one of the most active volcanic systems in Central America and part of the Central America Volcanic Arc (CAVA). Poás Volcano hosts a unique sulfur lake, which actually is one of the world's most acidic lakes, and has experienced molten sulfur eruptions. Past investigations, current monitoring activities and planned programs of investigation into lessening of the volcanic hazard are reported here. Specific sections of the monograph will be devoted to the impact of this volcano on the social, agricultural and industrial activities in the area. Legends and popular traditions related to this volcano will be described in the last chapter to round up a complete scientific review on this unique volcanic system.

Book Acoustic Electromagnetic Neutron Emissions from Fracture and Earthquakes

Download or read book Acoustic Electromagnetic Neutron Emissions from Fracture and Earthquakes written by Alberto Carpinteri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the relevant consequences of recently discovered and interdisciplinary phenomena, triggered by local mechanical instabilities. In particular, it looks at emissions from nano-scale mechanical instabilities such as fracture, turbulence, buckling and cavitation, focussing on vibrations at the TeraHertz frequency and Piezonuclear reactions. Future applications for this work could include earthquake precursors, climate change, energy production and cellular biology. A series of fracture experiments on natural rocks demonstrates that the TeraHertz vibrations are able to induce fission reactions on medium weight elements accompanied by neutron emissions. The same phenomenon appears to have occurred in several different situations, particularly in the chemical evolution of the Earth and Solar System, through seismicity (rocky planets) and storms (gaseous planets). As the authors explore, these phenomena can also explain puzzles related to the history of our planet, like the ocean formation or the primordial carbon pollution, as well as scientific mysteries, like the so-called “cold nuclear fusion” or the correct radio-carbon dating of organic materials, such as the Turin Shroud. In biology, Piezonuclear reactions could explain the mechanism that governs the so-called "sodium-potassium pump" and more in general, the metabolic processes. Scientists engaged in seismology, geophysics, geochemistry, climatology, planetology, condensed matter physics and b iology, as well as those involved in theoretical and applied mechanics, will all appreciate the innovative work presented here in a holistic way.

Book Hydrological Geochemical and Geophysical Changes Related to Earthquakes and Slow Slip Events

Download or read book Hydrological Geochemical and Geophysical Changes Related to Earthquakes and Slow Slip Events written by Chi-Yu King and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been documented for many centuries that earthquakes and other tectonic processes have hydrological effects. The magnitude and the spatial and temporal patterns of such signals recorded by scientific instruments in modern times have not always been straightforward to explain, and hence remain the subject of active research, especially those that might be precursors to earthquakes. This volume contains 9 papers that present new observations on earthquake-related hydrological, geochemical, and geophysical changes in Japan, Taiwan, Baja California in Mexico, and mostly China, one paper on laboratory rock-mechanics study, and a brief overview of Chinese research on earthquake prediction during the past 5 decades. Some of the observed changes occurred several days before earthquakes, and are explained with the consideration of heterogeneity of the earth's crust and earthquake-related slow-slip events, with earthquake forecasting as a possible application.

Book Sustainability Impact Assessment of Land Use Changes

Download or read book Sustainability Impact Assessment of Land Use Changes written by Katharina Helming and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-11 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many reasons why strategic intelligence is required to support policy decisions. These primarily stem from the nature of today's kno- edge society with two contrasting trends. On the one hand, there is a trend of increasing human intelligence in the economic, social and political s- tems. On the other hand, there is a trend towards dissolving certainties about the problems and solutions of today's society. Clearly, more inf- mation does not necessary imply more certainties on how to act. What is more, the same facts are often interpreted in markedly different ways: the same policy relevant information can – and often does – results in confli- ing framing of a problem by different stakeholders. This is mainly due to competing assumptions, rather then because of inconsistent facts. The- fore, it is not surprising that policy-makers are calling for strategic intel- gence to support their understanding of today's challenges, including the relevant aspects of science and technology, their impact and their possible future developments. Over the last 15 years, Europe has rapidly adopted the practice of dev- oping and using Impact Assessment (IA) tools to support decision-making. Formal procedures and guidance for IA are well established within the European Commission and in most EU Member States. The adoption of IA procedures alone, however, does not guarantee that every policy domain is actually using the full potential of these assessment tools in the preparation of policies and legislation.
