"I know this was your first night here, for many of you, but I didn't expect a lot of activity during sleeping hours." Jackie picked up her notebook and read. "My office was broken into five times last night, there was a scuffle in one of the hallways, someone was hanging off of the roof, we had to extract someone from a car muffler, two trees were covered in toilet paper, and there was a party near the rocket boosters. Did I miss anything?" "You missed a great party, commander," replied Captain Clyde, a monkey. A general cheer rose up from one section of the room. Jackie's eyebrows went down. "This is serious, ladies and gentlemen. We're here to work together to try to save our worlds!" Jackie looked out over the vast gathering of animals that had gathered together. Although they were all different, they had one thing in common: they were here to save their Creondor Universe from the Elcidians. Now if only she could convince the present day captain Tye to change his mind...

She opened her eyes and gently smiled; something she hadn't done in a while. Estella walked over toward the lake and watched as the wind gently tossed a few fallen leaves around. She placed her fingers through the laced metal fence and stood there, watching the water shimmer in the moonlight. It was beautiful. A figure silently watched Estella as she stood there. Eyes wide, he breathed hard as he watched her tattered dress move with the wind. He sat still on the grass, hidden near the tree as he continued to watch. Estella slowly walked away. He leaned forward and slowly followed her. He stopped when she did. Estella pulled her hair back and the figure inhaled sharply. Estella turned toward the sound. They both stood still, listening and waiting. Finally, Estella, still listening carefully, looked up at the moon. "Oh, Lumen, if you can hear me; know that I still love you." She turned her head slightly to listen. When she heard nothing, she sighed and slowly headed back to the building. "Oh, my falling star," groaned a voice. Estella quickly turned and stared at the figure that was standing there. She walked over, her heart beating faster, her paws starting to sweat. She drew close and gasped as they stared at each other. "I have died and gone to heaven," he exclaimed. "I must have."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Elcidean ships arrived in the Creondor Universe, Jackie watched in heightened anticipation as one of the ships entered their atmosphere and headed towards the Aeronautical Space and Exploration Center. For years, all the planets had planned and prepared their gifts of plants, seeds and other supplies in hopes of saving their universe from being harvested by the Elcideans. Now the moment of truth had arrived. Cora, Lilly, Trixie, Thomas, Sam and Cupid stood outside and watched as the spaceship flew in for a landing. Its width was huge and its dull frame seemed worn from travel. 'Imperial Fleet' was posted on its side. The stairs descended and everyone watched as one hedgehog walked down the stairs towards the group. Captain Tye walked up to Jackie. "Commander," said Captain Tye in a broken voice. Jackie smiled back at Captain Tye. "Run, Jackie, get out of here!" he shouted before he fell to the ground. Jackie stepped back as she felt strong arms grasp her tightly. She screamed and felt something rest against her head. "I'm sorry, commander, but I have a job to do and having the captain of my ship plan a revolt against me after all these years of travelling across the continuum of space is not in my plans."

A tear trickled down his cheek followed by another as he watched Terralepus disappear out of sight. He was finally heading home, but the thought of leaving his love behind was devastating. They had become fast friends over the years; both gifted in atomic manipulation, they loved to spar with one another. Now she was gone...Sam eyed the pretty girl in the wheelchair and walked over. "Hi," he said, extending his paw. The young girl looked up in surprise. "I'm Sam." "My name is Daisy," she replied extending her paw. "So have you come to watch the cheerleaders?" "Actually, I came to watch you," she replied. "I wanted to see if you could shake you pompoms and your butt. Apparently, you do." Sam broke out in a smile and stared at her for a few seconds before his fellow cheerleaders surrounded him. "Free hugs for ladybugs!" Sam sang out as they went for a group hug. He looked over at Daisy. "I think we forgot one ladybug," he said as he reached over to give her a hug. Daisy shed a tear as she looked at Sam. Nobody had ever paid much attention to her.

The pigeon looked at Howard with an evil gleam in its eyes. "I opened it," the pigeon spoke slowly and deliberately. "My word, you can talk!" exclaimed Howard. "And I can think for myself," the pigeon replied. "You've made me stronger and smarter. For months at a time, you kept me locked up in that bird cage with noting but water and food. I've had a lot of time to think; a lot of time to plan. And I think I know what I want to do." "What are you planning on doing?" Howard asked. The pigeon looked at him. "What would you do if you were in m position? I believe the time has come to create a new race of super birds. We have been inferior to your kind and treated as such. No more doctor..."

There, pinned up against the magnet, the teens groaned and glowed. Sheldon ran over and jumped into the vehicle to flip the switch and Mary watched as the teens dropped to the ground. Cora landed on her back and breathed hard. She grabbed at her belly and stared into the sky. "Cora, are you okay?" yelled Thomas. "Cora?" "I can't feel the baby move! My baby, oh, Thomas!" Lilly crawled over to her sister. "Breathe, Cora, slow deep breaths." Mary stared wide eyed at Cora. She stepped back as the officers surrounded the teens in the chaos. Mary looked over at Sheldon who was standing by the police car, now in handcuffs. Her friend was going to jail because of her. Mary quickly ran over and grabbed Sheldon by the arm and they quickly disappeared into the gathering crowd. Mary pulled Sheldon into an alley way and picked the lock on the handcuffs. "You're a doll, Mary," he said as the cuffs fell to the ground. "I don't know about that," replied Mary as they quickly walked to the end of the alley way. "I just hurt a baby, how good does that make me?" "You didn't know," he replied. Mary stopped and leaned her head against the wall. Sheldon turned her around and she leaned against him and sobbed. "Aint nothing right about me," she cried. "Nothing right about me either," replied Sheldon.

Book Seamus s Short Story

Download or read book Seamus s Short Story written by Heather Hartt-Sussman and published by Groundwood Books Ltd. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seamus is short, and from where he is standing, the world appears to be made for tall people. Seamus would give anything to be taller! One day, while playing dress-up in his mother’s closet, he finds a way to reach new heights. With his mother’s high-heeled shoes on, Seamus can suddenly reach everything that was once too high: the top-floor elevator button, the chocolate milk in the fridge, the TV remote and that horrid picture of him as a baby. But when Seamus encounters problems that can’t be solved from a great height, he has to admit that sometimes being small just isn’t so bad. Acclaimed picture book author Heather Hartt-Sussman brings a light touch to this nuanced story about acceptance, resourcefulness and love, complemented by the humor and beauty in Milan Pavlović’s colorful paintings of Seamus’s world — where there are times to be tall and times to be small.
