Book Terracotta Figurines of the Roman Period A Study of the Distribution of Figurines from Graves in the Empire

Download or read book Terracotta Figurines of the Roman Period A Study of the Distribution of Figurines from Graves in the Empire written by Carrie E. Boone and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines terracotta figurines that were deposited in graves during the Roman period. The approach of collecting and analyzing figurines from graves was intended to gather a large and varied sample that would provide a relatively secure timeframe within which to study the types of figurines produced during this period and their patterns of distribution. The majority of the material collected for this study was provided by excavation reports and monographs, which provided a variety of information on the original contexts and the comparable figurine types that have been found in the Empire. The various chapters explore the methods of terracotta production, the major production centers of the figurines, Roman burial customs, a description of the figurines within their original contexts, a comparative analysis of the types and number of figurines found in the graves, and an examination of the patterns of distribution that the material produced when assimilated into distribution maps. The evidence suggests that the high concentration of figurines that occur along the frontier zones of the Rhine and Danube rivers during the first and second centuries C.E. implies not only a surface Romanization of this region but also perhaps that the act of depositing a figurine in a grave was part of the burial customs of the Roman military culture.

Book Dedications in Clay

Book excerpt: This dissertation explores early Greek religion and society through a contextual analysis of the ritual use of terracotta votive figurines in the Early Iron Age, c. 1100-700 BCE. I have compiled the major deposits of terracotta figurines (both zoomorphic and anthropomorphic) from sanctuaries in the Peloponnesos and East Greece, creating a broad typology and chronology applicable to all Geometric terracotta figurines that allows for an in-depth analysis of the use, distribution, and symbolism of this category of votive offering. Terracotta figurines are among the earliest and most abundant figural symbols used in early Greece and offer insight into the evolving religious beliefs and social changes of the period. My diachronic approach to the Early Iron Age highlights the relationship of Geometric ritual to Mycenaean and Archaic traditions and contributes to the ongoing research in Greek religion, sculpture, figurine studies, and gender studies. I conclude my dissertation with a consideration of the relationship between votive, deity, and worshipper, exploring how gender construction and evolving social hierarchies in the Geometric period are reflected in the rituals practiced. This study highlights the elite concerns of figurines and their growing use throughout the Geometric period for encoding social roles in a changing society.

Book The Terracotta Figurines from Tell Timai

Download or read book The Terracotta Figurines from Tell Timai written by James E. Bennett and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2016 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study documents the corpus of terracotta figurines that were found during excavations at Tell Timai between 2009 and 2013. The study assesses the locations in which terracotta figurines have been found both at Tell Timai and across Egypt, and discusses their usage within the settlements of Pharaonic and Ptolemaic-Roman Egypt. In addition, a chronological discussion of terracotta usage in Egypt from the Pharaonic to the Ptolemaic-Roman Period is presented to place the Tell Timai terracottas in chronological order to highlight themes of continuity and change. The figurine catalogue provides a detailed examination of the types and forms represented at Tell Timai and highlights the manufacturing techniques and decoration schemes used for specific types. This analysis also provides a clearer idea of the type of domestic religious activities that were practised at Tell Timai by the local population and the choice of terracotta styles used at specific periods. The study also provides date ranges based on associated ceramic assemblages to provide clearer dating for Egyptian terracotta types in Egypt.

Book Terracottas and Plastic Lamps of the Roman Period

Download or read book Terracottas and Plastic Lamps of the Roman Period written by Clairève Grandjouan and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains a short introduction, a classification by types, a critical catalogue, a register of the dated contexts, concordances and indexes, and an excursus by T. B. L. Webster on the theatrical figurines. Nearly half of the 1,100 items are illustrated with photographs. The subjects of the (mostly fragmentary) figurines are revealing. To the Greek deities of earlier times are added Oriental figures like Serapis, Isis, Harpokrates, Attis, as well as Egyptian priests and Asiatic dancers. The molded "plastic" lamps that are included in this volume were probably made in the same workshops as the figurines.

Book Between Deity and Dedicator

Download or read book Between Deity and Dedicator written by Sanne Hoffmann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a broad survey of Greek votive terracotta figurines, a class of votives where previous scholarship has mainly consisted of research in specific sites and collections. They have traditionally been interpreted as inexpensive and inconspicuous votives for everyday use, but this study questions whether this is in fact the case. By introducing the theoretical model of chaîne opératoire for a life cycle study of the votive figurines the book moves through the stages of production, distribution, use and discard of the votives, the latter both in the sense of practical discard and in the end of use. The study is based on a selection of case studies and surveys of relevant material, allowing for in-depth analyses of the terracottas in those life stages of shifting contextual interactions. The approach furthers new knowledge on several levels, such as the value of the terracottas, their suitability and their popularity as dedications, their iconography and symbolism, the general votive practice, and the end of the terracotta practice. As such, the book is relevant for all who seek insights on terracotta figurines, votive offerings, ritual practice, as well as those interested in archaeological methodology, theory and contexts.
