Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to provide an account of the terminology the European Union has created and used with regard to its development cooperation policy since the Treaty of Rome was signed in 1957. For this purpose, a terminological analysis has been conducted, based on a corpus of texts produced by the EU in this domain. A corpus-based approach to terminology has been chosen as it opens up the possibility to gather both conceptual and linguistic as well as usage information about the terminological units. Moreover, it allows the study of terms in the context of communicative situations and enables the analysis of concordances that can be used to reveal possible ideological aspects of the terminology involved. The book not only provides a detailed and comprehensive report on the status quo of the EU's terminology in this field. It also reflects the evolution of its terminology since the establishment of a common European development cooperation policy and thus against the background of an ever-changing socio-economic and political situation. The findings are meant to contribute to a better knowledge and understanding of European development cooperation policy as well as to help improve communication between professionals in European and national bodies.

Understanding more and better is at the basis of knowledge creation and extension. One way of getting access to how understanding comes about and how knowledge is the result of a continuous dynamics of understanding and misunderstanding is by studying the cognitive potential and the development of natural language(s) and more particularly of terminology, in specialized domains. In this volume on dynamics and terminology, thirteen contributors illustrate that human cognition is a dynamic process in a variety of socio-cognitive and cultural settings. The case studies encompass a panoply of methodologies and deal with subjects ranging from the dynamics of legal understanding in multilingual Europe, over financial, economic and scientific terminology in several cultural and linguistic settings, to language policy issues in multilingual environments. All thirteen contributors link the dynamics of cognition to the creative potential of language as a repository of past and present experience in cultural settings and to the creation of neologisms in domain-specific languages. Attention is given to the functionality of indeterminacy, vagueness, polysemy, ambiguity, synonymy, metaphor and phraseology. Cars, for example, contain more and more control software (ECUs) that are networked with each other. With new rail vehicles, software problems delay commissioning by months, even years, because the different components are not coordinated with each other. A timely system test would help, but there is a lack of time and resources. The functionality of the software is simply too great. So, you must automate. Automation is not only necessary for the execution of tests, but above all for the generation of suitable test cases. This is possible with Combinatory Logic, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and Quality Function Deployment (QFD). When today’s cars use map services from the cloud, or their own sensors, for an Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) to perform driving decisions; or when in the future an autonomous car meets another; or with truck platooning; or when adding a new, previously unknown device to an IoT orchestra, the original base system expands its functionality. Therefore, such an expanding system needs being retested before it can do decisions with the potential of affecting harm to humans or things, after each update, after each learning. This is Continuous Testing during operation; it supplements Continuous Delivery and Continuous Integration. Disruptive innovations in automotive require an equally disruptive new approach to testing of software-intense systems. This requires moving from once-upon-a-time testing before release to autonomous real-time software & systems testing during operations, with indications to users and suppliers about the actual state and testing results. This book explains the theory and the implementation approach for a framework for Autonomous Real-time Testing (ART) of a software-intense system while in operation.
