Book Ready when You Are Mr Coppola Mr Spielberg Mr Crowe

Download or read book Ready when You Are Mr Coppola Mr Spielberg Mr Crowe written by Jerry Ziesmer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a year, the world gathers around their television sets and views that glorious tribute the film industy pays to itself. By the end of Oscar night, a handful of emotional writers and directors and stars have blinked back tears as they stared into the spotlight and thanked God, their parents, and even their make-up artist. Few ever think to acknowledge the individual who gasses up the engine of movie-making, partially because the job by nature is invisible. Even the job title is suspiciously low-key. But no movie has ever been made, or made well, without the character who toils just outside the spotlight. He arranged for the spotlight, hired the spotlight operator, and even made sure that it was trained correctly on the stars. At the end of the day, there would be no movie screens, no Oscar winners, no finished films, good or bad, without the Assistant Director.

Book Historical Dictionary of the 1960s

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the 1960s written by James S. Olson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-12-30 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few eras in U.S. history have begun with more optimistic promise and ended in more pessimistic despair than the 1960s. When JFK became president in 1960, the U.S. was the hope of the world. Ten years later American power abroad seemed wasted in the jungles of Indochina, and critics at home cast doubt on whether the U.S. was really the land of the free and the home of the brave. This book takes an encyclopedic look at the decade—at the individuals who shaped the era, the civil rights movement, the antiwar movement, the women's movement, and the youth rebellion. It covers the political, military, social, cultural, religious, economic, and diplomatic topics that made the 1960s a unique decade in U.S. history.

  • Author : David P. Hadley

Download or read book The Rising Clamor written by David P. Hadley and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US intelligence community as it currently exists has been deeply influenced by the press. Although considered a vital overseer of intelligence activity, the press and its validity is often questioned, even by the current presidential administration. But dating back to its creation in 1947, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has benefited from relationships with members of the US press to garner public support for its activities, defend itself from its failures, and promote US interests around the world. Many reporters, editors, and publishers were willing and even eager to work with the agency, especially at the height of the Cold War. That relationship began to change by the 1960s when the press began to challenge the CIA and expose many of its questionable activities. Respected publications went from studiously ignoring the CIA's activities to reporting on the Bay of Pigs, CIA pacification programs in Vietnam, the CIA's war in Laos, and its efforts to use US student groups and a variety of other non-government organizations as Cold War tools. This reporting prompted the first major congressional investigation of the CIA in December 1974. In The Rising Clamor: The American Press, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the Cold War, David P. Hadley explores the relationships that developed between the CIA and the press, its evolution over time, and its practical impact from the creation of the CIA to the first major congressional investigations of its activities in 1975–76 by the Church and Pike committees. Drawing on a combination of archival research, declassified documents, and more than 2,000 news articles, Hadley provides a balanced and considered account of the different actors in the press and CIA relationships, how their collaboration helped define public expectations of what role intelligence should play in the US government, and what an intelligence agency should be able to do.
