Book The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of Latin America

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of Latin America written by Xochitl Bada and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sociology of Latin America, established in the region over the past eighty years, is a thriving field whose major contributions include dependence theory, world-systems theory, and historical debates on economic development, among others. The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of Latin America provides research essays that introduce the readers to the discipline's key areas and current trends, specifically with regard to contemporary sociology in Latin America, as well as a collection of innovative empirical studies deploying a variety of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The essays in the Handbook are arranged in eight research subfields in which scholars are currently making significant theoretical and methodological contributions: Sociology of the State, Social Inequalities, Sociology of Religion, Collective Action and Social Movements, Sociology of Migration, Sociology of Gender, Medical Sociology, and Sociology of Violence and Insecurity. Due to the deterioration of social and economic conditions, as well as recent disruptions to an already tense political environment, these have become some of the most productive and important fields in Latin American sociology. This roiling sociopolitical atmosphere also generates new and innovative expressions of protest and survival, which are being explored by sociologists across different continents today. The essays included in this collection offer a map to and a thematic articulation of central sociological debates that make it a critical resource for those scholars and students eager to understand contemporary sociology in Latin America.

With a theoretical trajectory beginning in efforts to combine Marxism and Indianism, then developed in reaction to the neoliberal turn of the 1980s and in contact with the mass social movements of recent years, García Linera's Plebeian Power can be read as both an evolving analysis of Bolivian reality through periods of great social change, and as an intellectual biography of the author himself. Book Towards An Unknown Marx

Download or read book Towards An Unknown Marx written by Enrique Dussel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first complete commentary on Marx's manuscripts of 1861-63, works that guide our understanding of fundamental concepts such as 'surplus-value' and 'production price'. The recent publication of Marx's writings in their entirety has been a seminal event in Marxian scholarship. The hitherto unknown second draft of Volume 1 and first draft of Volume 3 of Capital, both published in the Manuscripts of 1861-63, now provide an important intermediate link between the Grundrisse and the final published editions of Capital. In this book, Enrique Dussel, one of the most original Marxist philosophers in the world today, provides an authoritative and detailed commentary on the manuscripts of 1861-63. The main points which Dussel emphasises in this path-breaking work are: The fundamental category in Marx's theory is 'living labour' which exists outside of capital and which capital must subsume in order to produce surplus-value Theories of Surplus Value is not a historical survey of previous theories, but rather a 'critical confrontation' through which Marx developed new categories for his own theory The most important new categories developed in this manuscript are related to the 'forms of appearance' of surplus value. The final part of the book discusses the relevance of the Manuscripts of 1861-63 to contemporary global capitalism, especially to the continuing underdevelopment and extreme poverty of Latin America.

Book The Neoliberal Pattern of Domination

Download or read book The Neoliberal Pattern of Domination written by José Manuel Sánchez Bermúdez and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its current state of historical development, capital finds its internal contradictions tending towards an irresolvable character as manifested in multiple crises. Embodied in a fistful of gigantic transnational companies whose representatives seek consolidation as a global oligarchy, capital continues to concentrate its economic, political and military power as it produces a growing mass of redundant human beings, promotes conflicts that result in misery, chaos, social degradation and death, and destroys entire societies while razing the natural environment, thereby putting humanity itself at risk. The defense of life and the construction of renewed hope for a future require opposition to the domination of capital. This book seeks to contribute to that effort by setting out an analysis of the mechanisms in which capital is based.

Book Critical Marxism in Mexico

Download or read book Critical Marxism in Mexico written by Stefan Gandler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Critical Marxism in Mexico, Stefan Gandler, coming from the tradition of the Frankfurt School, reveals the contributions that Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez and Bolívar Echeverría have made to universal thought. While in recent times Latin America has taken its distance from global power centers, and reorganised its political and economic relations, in philosophy the same tendency is barely visible. Critical Marxism in Mexico is a contribution to the reorganisation of international philosophical discussion, with Critical Theory as the point of departure. Despite having studied in Europe, where philosophical Eurocentrism remains virulent, Gandler opens his eyes to another tradition of modernity and offers an account of the life and philosophy of Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez and Bolívar Echeverría, former senior faculty members at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
