Book excerpt: In Acts of Care, Sara Ritchey recovers women's healthcare work by identifying previously overlooked tools of care: healing prayers, birthing indulgences, medical blessings, liturgical images, and penitential practices. Ritchey demonstrates that women in premodern Europe were both deeply engaged with and highly knowledgeable about health, the body, and therapeutic practices, but their critical role in medieval healthcare has been obscured because scholars have erroneously regarded the evidence of their activities as religious rather than medical. The sources for identifying the scope of medieval women's health knowledge and healthcare practice, Ritchey argues, are not found in academic medical treatises. Rather, she follows fragile traces detectable in liturgy, miracles, poetry, hagiographic narratives, meditations, sacred objects, and the daily behaviors that constituted the world, as well as in testaments and land transactions from hospitals and leprosaria established and staffed by beguines and Cistercian nuns. Through its surprising use of alternate sources, Acts of Care reconstructs the vital caregiving practices of religious women in the southern Low Countries, reconnecting women's therapeutic authority into the everyday world of late medieval healthcare. Popular perceptions of medieval medicine, however, remain understudied. This book aims to fill that lacuna by providing a multifaceted study of medical medievalism, defined as modern representations of medieval medicine intended for popular audiences. The volume takes as its starting point the fictional medieval detective Brother Cadfael, whose observations on bodies, herbs, and death have shaped many popular conceptions of medieval medicine in the Anglophone world. The ten contributing authors move beyond Cadfael by exploring global medical medievalisms in a range of genres and cultural contexts. Beyond Cadfael is organized into three sections, the first of which engages with how disease, injury, and the sick are imagined in fictitious medieval worlds. The second, on doctors at work, looks at medieval medical practice in novels, films and television, and public commemorative practice. These essays examine how practitioners are represented and imagined in medieval and pseudo-medieval worlds. The third section discusses medicine designed for and practiced by women in the Middle Ages and today, with a focus on East Asian medical traditions. These essays are guided by the recognition that medieval medical practices are often in dialogue with contemporary medical practices that fall outside the norms of Western biomedicine.

During the frequent days of clear sky, the entire island of Sicily, the white Mount Etna, the mosaics of the Villa Romana, in Piazza Armerina, are among the oldest and most beautiful ancient mosaics in the world. Sicilian arts can be admired in the cathedrals of Montreal, Cefalu, Palermo, and Catania, among many other cities. The various castles of the Ventimiglia in a number of Sicilian towns, and particularly the sumptuous Castle of Castelbuono and the Castle of Enna, the picturesque castle of Pietraperzia, to name a few, are among the most outstanding works of architecture in the world. In each town and locality of Sicily are reminders of history, masterpieces of arts, and beauty of nature. Some towns have as many as a dozen of churches built during various periods, by Sicilians known throughout the world as Italians. In Petralia Soprana, my ancestors’ town, is the Church of Saint Peter and Paul, where, among other magnificent religious arts, is located the first exceptionally admirable wooden crucifix sculpted by the their native sculptor, Gian Francesco Pintorno, also known as Frate Umile. The church was found on the fourteenth century and contains archives with documents dated since its foundation. Thanks to the archpriest Don Calogero la Placa, I found there documents of my ancestors back to the year 1570. Churches like the Saint Peter and Paul of Petralia Soprana are awaiting to be discovered by the world’s tourists in most small and big towns of Sicily; and so are innumerable masterpieces of Sicilian archeology, architectures, arts, literature, folklore, and not to be forgotten, there awaiting are the hospitality and cuisine of the Sicilian people.
