Landing a tenure-track position is no easy task. Achieving tenure is even more difficult. Under what policies and practices do faculty find greater clarity about tenure and experience higher levels of job satisfaction? And what makes an institution a great place to work? In 2005–2006, the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education surveyed more than 15,000 tenure-track faculty at 200 participating institutions to assess their job satisfaction. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This research study investigated the perceptions and experiences of the socialization processes among early career foreign national tenure-accruing faculty in a Research I University, using the grounded research design. The findings revealed that the foreign national faculty appeared to shoulder the triad of tenure track responsibilities i.e., teaching, research, and service amidst unclear and unspoken expectations. However, coming from different cultural back grounds, including collectivist cultures at times foreign national faculty needed more personalized attention than is usually offered in the individualistic culture of the U.S. While they focused on their accomplishments, some of the faculty members paid little attention to the sociocultural requirements of their spouses, and developed relationship concerns. Unspoken and vague expectations about research further complicated faculty work and impeded the adjustment process. Very little research presently exists in this area. Although this study fills that gap in literature, a more concerted and focused socialization process, with clearer departmental expectations, and thoughtful institutional support is likely to ensure that multicultural faculty experience more productive, and caring office and home environments.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examines an understudied group according the American Council on Education: the tenure-track early career faculty (ECF). The focus is on the culturalization, socialization, academic culture, and emergent themes discerned from ten semi-structured interviews with tenure-track ECF. This qualitative bounded system case study was conducted in the context of a Midwestern Carnegie I Research Land-Grant Institution, an institution with emphasis on teaching, research, and service. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted and transcribed. From these, codes, categories, patterns, and themes were found. Additional documentation was also considered such as participants0́9 resumes and the faculty handbook, COE: Orientation to COE A Guide for Faculty 2008-2009. The themes included a reliance on socialization from the parent degree granting institution, and an overall request for balance between professional and personal life. In addition the ECFs need mentoring at their new institution in research, writing and publication, in professional identity, and socialization to tacit knowledge via cognitive apprenticeship. A recommendation is that there be a bi-directional conversation on socialization, rather than a top down approach.
