Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The storms of life threaten all of us at one time or another, leaving us feeling lost, alone and without any hope. We all face adversities in the name of relationships, physical and mental health, the pain of loss, work stress, finances and persecution. Our relationship with Jesus Christ does not always exclude us from all the unpleasant circumstances life sometimes throws our way. But the Bible makes it clear that when we turn our lives over to God and pursue Him wholeheartedly, He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6), no matter what our temporary situation looks like in the natural. The truth is, we are never alone, and there is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24), granting to us out of His great mercy an inexhaustible supply of power and love to weather any life-storm we face. Through it all, He ensures we are more than conquerors. (Romans 8:37) This first of two volumes in a year-long daily devotional highlights nearly a hundred of the most comforting and powerful verses on how God is our Shelter from the storm. Streamlined commentary unveils the truth of each passage and offers practical application to incorporate in one’s daily life. This devotional outlines the source material for your unwavering faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and offers biblical proof that we will be carried through the storm and rise above!

Book Representations of the Afterlife in Luke Acts

Download or read book Representations of the Afterlife in Luke Acts written by Alexey Somov and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions regarding the afterlife are many, and the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts pay a great deal of attention to them: why does Luke speak about several different forms of the afterlife? Why is resurrection described as a person's transformation into an angelic being? How many abodes are appointed for the righteous and the wicked after death? Alexey Somov addresses these queries in relation to the apparent confusion and variety found in the text, and in respect of the interrelatedness of these issues, and their connection with other eschatological issues in Luke-Acts, and in relation to the wider cultural context of the Mediterranean world to which Luke belonged. Every culture expresses its beliefs by means of special metaphors that allow it to comprehend supernatural realities in terms of everyday experience. Belief in the afterlife was part of this metaphorical system which Luke shared with the ancient eastern Mediterranean culture. Somov takes his analysis one step further by applying Cognitive Metaphor Theory to selected metaphorical aspects of the afterlife. While the inconsistencies and incoherence of the combined metaphors may seem jarring to a contemporary Western reader, Somov's reading enables a recognition of the specific religious metaphors used, which for Luke would have been current and widely accepted.

Download or read book The Revelation of Jesus Christ Decoded written by Roland Nelson and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revelation of Jesus Christ Decoded follows the NKJV of the book of Revelation to capture the natural, metaphorical, and spiritual interpretations of scripture. The book is designed not only for those of Christian faith but also for anyone who wishes to understand what Christian doctrine is really about without the religiosity that some denominations might adhere to. At the same time, it provides spiritual insights on the fuller meaning of some scriptural verses, such that all readers will come away with a refreshing new insight and understanding. The book is broken down into three distinct areas: foundational doctrine; prophetic (scroll), declaration (trumpets), and judgment (bowls) affirmations; and end-times prophecy. In all areas, the interpretation has been validated by other scripture and references to create an accurate and reasonable illustration that readers will comprehend as concepts are presented. Book Tents of the Righteous

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Blair
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2014-06-28
  • ISBN : 1783064285
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Tents of the Righteous written by Eric Blair and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘What about human rights, Mark? Do we have any?’ 2050. Set in post-apocalyptic England, Tents of the Righteous imagines what it would be like to be a minister in charge of a government no longer subject to the democratic process and a free press, and what it would be like to be an individual living in such a state. Protagonist Mark Carradine is promoted to the post of Lord Commissioner of Health by the Lord Protector, the ruler of a totalitarian regime. Tasked with reducing the country’s population by 15 million to save resources, one of his top priorities is ‘Take Your Leave’, a euthanasia programme aimed at the elderly and disabled. Carradine, who follows his chilling instructions to the letter, has to cope with many threats to his personal and professional life. He is also ordered to bring his brother Aidan in from a remote part of the country, where he has been running a rebel Christian community, to become Archbishop of Canterbury and in essence a government spokesman. Aidan’s public duty is to underline the authority of the state and to give the churches full support to the Lord Protector. As in Orwell’s 1984, the state rules the population’s lives and has sole control of not only communication, but also the weapons. From Hitler’s Germany or Stalin’s Russia, it is easy to see how, when civil society collapses and people seek order and structure, a totalitarian society can evolve – even in a country with a long history of democratic government, such as the UK. Tents of the Righteousexamines such a state coming into existence and looks at how such circumstances can only serve to bring out the worse – but also sometimes the best – in people. It is a frightening scenario made all the more so because of the realistic way that the author has approached the subject. This work of speculative fiction is particularly relevant due to the current debate on government surveillance of internet traffic, reminding us of how easily individuals can cede information to the government. Eric Blair draws inspiration from 1984 and author J G Ballard, and also feels that John Le Carre’s portrayal of mutual suspicion and Ed Wilson’s The Midnight Swimming together sum up the state of paranoia that existed in the 50s and 60s.

Book Psalms Part 2 and Lamentations

Download or read book Psalms Part 2 and Lamentations written by Erhard S. Gerstenberger and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2001-08-15 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psalms, Part 2, and Lamentations is Volume XV of The Forms of the Old Testament Literature, a series that aims to present a form- critical analysis of every book and each unit in the Hebrew Bible. Fundamentally exegetical, the FOTL volumes examine the structure, genre, setting, and intention of the biblical literature in question. They also study the history behind the form-critical discussion of the material, attempt to bring consistency to the terminology for the genres and formulas of the biblical literature, and expose the exegetical procedures so as to enable students and pastors to engage in their own analysis and interpretation of the Old Testament texts. This volume completes Erhard Gerstenberger's widely praised discussion of the psalms literature begun in Volume XIV, and includes as well an admirable study of the book of Lamentations. Gerstenberger interprets the different kinds of songs and prayers that comprise the book of Psalms in light of their socio-historical settings and provides a concise formal and structural analysis of each biblical text based on an illuminating comparison with other ancient Near Eastern prayers and hymns. Seeing the biblical writings in relation to the social, cultic, religious, and theological conceptions of Israel's neighoring peoples allows contemporary readers to better grasp the purpose and spiritual meaning of the psalms and Lamentations to the Jewish community that composed them.

Book The NIV Matthew Henry Commentary in One Volume

Download or read book The NIV Matthew Henry Commentary in One Volume written by Matthew Henry and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1992 with total page 7740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time has sealed the reputation of Matthew Henry's classic commentary as a rich source of insight into God's word. Three centuries after its first publication, it remains one of the best-loved, most popular commentaries ever written. However, while its wisdom is timeless, the English language has changed much through the years. Words that meant one thing in Matthew Henry's day have taken on different meanings today. In addition, Henry's often wordy reflections are generations removed from the crisp style that communicates most effectively to contemporary readers. The Zondervan NIV Matthew Henry Commentary is a masterful response to these concerns. It delivers the heart and soul of Henry's incomparable writings in a style that is easy to read and understand. -Dr. Leslie Church's meticulous abridgment retains the essential content of the original work. - Easily misunderstood words have been replaced with modern ones while keeping Henry's style. - Use of the New International Version (NIV) instead of the King James Version makes this edition fully compatible with today's most widely used Bible translation. In one volume, here is a wealth of exposition, metaphors, analogies, and illustrations, ideal for - Personal devotions - Bible study - Sermon and lesson preparation
